The Best Non-Pro HD Cam on the Market

I researched a new camcorder for a few months before going with the HG10. At the time I owned a Sony SR80 SD camcorder, it was a great little camcorder that got me into the HDD & digital camcorder era and as I started to look into moving into the High Def world of recording I figured the logical transition would be to move to the Sony SR7 but I did want to do my due diligence and research what else was on the market and along came this little gem. Now I must say that I did not buy this camcorder for the camera function(s) because I own a Canon EOS 40D DSLR so I cannot comment on any of the ‘camera’ side of things related this camcorder (in fact I have not taken a single a picture with the camcorder; strange thing is though I actually purchased a 1GB miniSD card with the camera, go figure).Anyway, I narrowed my purchasing decision down to the Canon HG10 and the Sony SR7…I read every review out there regarding the two. I went to various electronic stores and compared the two side by side and that was the tell-tell difference…The Canon was just plain superior in image quality and that was my main decision factor…I will say the Sony was probably a little more ergonomic than the Canon and felt more comfortable in my hand however my wife and I have two children and the reason I was moving to HD was to capture them in as pure an image as I could and the Canon simply did that better than the Sony, so I was willing to overlook the ergonomics. Oh did I mention the price difference? At the time (a couple of weeks before Christmas 07’) the Sony was a little over [$]more than the Canon. The Canon has a number of features and if you own an EOS camera many, a great many of the features found on the EOS camera lineup appear on this camcorder (like recording in Priority, AV, TV or Scene modes…setting the aperture and shutter speeds, ect)…In fact this is where the Canon began to really pull away from the Sony…Canon incorporated their CMOS sensor into this camcorder and their DIGIC image processing which truly produces one magnificent image…I have hooked this camcorder to my Plasma and played the videos and its truly amazing to watch my sons football games or my daughters dance classes in such quality…I have burned the videos to Blu-Ray and played them on our PS3 and the image quality is well simply amazing. A couple of the things I wish they would have done on the Canon were to provide a larger HDD, this one comes with a 40GB but I would have preferred at least a 60GB…Setting the recording mode to HXP records to disk @ 15 meg per second and with the 40GB HDD you get 5hours and 45mins worth of recording time (more than enough for most recordings but a 60GB would have been nice considering the cost of disk storage is so inexpensive now days)…I also wished they included a little better software with the camcorder, the included software works but it does not have a great many features available..I ended up buying Nero 8 Ultra and it works great…I also wish they would have included a docking station with the camcorder, I had that with my SR80 and it really made image transferring quite simple. Simply sit the unit in the dock and turn it on and images started transferring…This would be nice feature on the Canon.Do your research and purchase the camcorder that most meets your needs (and budget) but if you’re in the market for a HD camcorder you cannot go wrong with this one and for the price that B&H has it for, it’s a no brainer….!!

Everything that everybody else is saying it's true. The image rocks, the size it's great, even the battery life is long. But try to capture your files using a Mac. YOU CAN'T.
Final Cut don't support this kind of files yet. So you're gonna have to download this very specific software to encode your .MTS files (this cameras native format) to apple readable files.
If you are a Macintosh user, wait a little longer before you buy it and learn about it. I didn't.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HG10 High Definition HDD Camcorder:

I have had the product only for one month and HD just blows my mind away. I have. an old jvc SD camera and when I compare it with the video that we get with the canon it is so amazing. I haven't had the opportunity to compare this camera with other HD cameras since so few people have it. The ease of use of the wheel based control leaves something to be desired but once you get used to it, it is a hoot to play around with it. All in all for the price it is a great acquisition.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HG10 High Definition HDD Camcorder:

This camcorder has everything you will need and can record for long enough. Up to 6 hours in HDD and around 20 hours in the lowest setting. HD quality is excellent and the image stabilization is also very good (I always recommend a tripod just the same for professional stuff). Don't waste your time like I did killing yourself over 10 camcorders. Save more and get the extended warranty, battery, bag and hdmi cable like I did. You still save on this item and you only lose out on being able to record for 10 hours longer (if your battery would even stay charged).

Comments about Canon VIXIA HG10 High Definition HDD Camcorder:

To work with this camera in Final Cut Pro 6, it is just as easy, if not easier than capturing with a Firewire MiniDV cam. In play mode and the power connected, connect your HG10 to the Mac via USB. In your project, select the Log and Transfer option, select preferences, and select Apple intermidiate codec under AVCHD. Make sure your scratch disk is set, and drag and drop the desired clips into the queue where it reads "Drag media here." The clips will transfer into the project bin, and you'll be ready to edit. Go to Canon's support site and search for help with Final Cut Studio 2 if you need more direction.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HG10 High Definition HDD Camcorder:

I have been using this camera for a few weeks and really like what it has to offer. Some of the functions are a little hard to find the first time and I think the manual could be a little easier to read. I like the fact that I don't have to mess with tapes anymore! The battery life seems to be pretty good but I think I will purchase another one to match the long recording time of the hard drive. The zoom buttons are a little different for me beings I am used to a wheel instead of toggle buttons. Overall I'd recommend this to anyone who shoots casual sporting events as well as childrens activities.

This camcorder records great quality video. The Effects even allow indoor recordings without much noticeable grain. The manual focus is somewhat difficult to master (a focus ring would be much better) but for the most part it is a very nice camcorder.

Easy to use, great features including white balance and custom camera settings, sharp HD videos and good photos. Had a problem with the hard drive going down shortly after purchase. Disappointing not to have it for a vacation trip, but the authorized service center fixed it promptly and returned it. No problem for me since it was handled well, and rare glitches with even a great product can be expected. Purchased a second higher-capacity battery and have had all the time I need between the two. Just wish consumer camcorders had a "locked" fade-in/fade-out so you didn't have to select it each time. Not a con since no camcorder I have seen has it.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HG10 High Definition HDD Camcorder:

I bought this camcorder to film short movies with my friends. The battery it came with lasted 4-5 hours. The viewfinder was pretty useless. The quality is great! The microphone is good indoors, but in the wind it gets pretty messy. I did not take pictures with it yet so I have no opinion about that. It has decent zoom. The software it comes with is not superb but it does get very basic video editing stuff accomplished. The controls are easy to learn and maneuver. The hard drive is a great size too! This is my very first camcorder and I am very pleased with it.

                  NOTE:
At first, I had difficulty transferring the video files into editable video files. However, the COREL software included with the camcorder helps you export the video files into an editable video format.

The HG10 is a delight . Easy to use , exceptional
color , and features of a $3,000 video camera . This borderlines on the consumer / prosumer level .
You can use this cam for any occasion and be happy with the outcome . The only negative , if you want to call it that , is sometimes its auto focus is a tad slow . So for Pic , i give it a 10
                  and sound , i give it a 8 ! Buy This Video Recorder . And at B and H's price , it can't be beat !!

The camera is easy to use. Just has the main features that you need. Not all the complicated stuff. Takes great movies even in low light conditions. Truly HD. Good idea to get an extra battery. Battery lasts approx. 45 minutes on the highest quality setting. Highly recommend.

Our home movies have never looked better! The image stabilization is awesome since most of our home movies are hand held. The tiny size wierded me out at first but don't let it fool you. The only struggle we've had is figuring out the best way to edit and archive footage since AVCHD is still new-ish. We'll probably buy Sony Vegas for editing.
