I was fortunate enough to have a business trip to NYC and swung by the B&H store ...with the goal of finding a carbon fiber (read: "light weight) monopod and not spending more than $100.

I got to lay hands on most of the monopod models they had on display and came away with this Sunpak. It was by far the sturdiest of the mid-priced 'pods and almost, or just as, sturdy as units costing two and three times as much ...but they also tended to be a bit heavier. When testing the monopods I fully extended the lowest leg segment ...the thinnest ...and tried to flex each by holding them at a steep angle to the ground while applying a bit of pressure. Most of the monopods showed quite a fair amount of flex; the Sunpak was the most rigid. I also wanted one with an optional "spike" and the Sunpak had that; you simply screw in the rubber foot to reveal the metal spike tip. The only thing making this a less than perfect find are the section locks; I was looking for lever type locks versus the screw twist locks which this Sunpak has. If the lock type isn't an issue then add another star.

If your looking for a lightweight/carbon fiber, sturdy monopod that won't break the bank ...the Sunpak is hard to beat.

I have had this monopod for about a year and a half. It's been very lightly used. I was just using it to shoot low angle video with my Canon 7D with the 17-50mm lens and the top popped off while I had it turned upside down. The camera and mini ball head housing fell to the ground and my Tamron lens got ruined. Turns out the mounting screw and plate are glued in, there's nothing structural holding it in place. One star for being low cost and light. Minus three for ruining my $700 lens. I'm lucky my camera survived.

Comments about Sunpak Pro 724M Carbon Fiber Monopod:

I am going to sites in Andalucia where tripods are not permitted. I had been warned by others about the ineffectiveness of monopods. I picked this one up based on price, ease of use, light weight, and strength. I have shot photos in a dimly lit cathedral that I was not able to do handheld the week before. It takes developing a techniques, but this one sets up quickly and can put slower shutter speeds in reach. I used it for outside photos, too, with good results. With it retracted, I just leave it attached to the camera which is around my neck. The pistol-grip ballhead makes adjustment easy and quick.

Comments about Sunpak Pro 724M Carbon Fiber Monopod:

Super lightweight and strong; coupled with my Monfroto ball head, Nikon D5000 and Nikon 70-300 it's still lighter than my D40 with the same lens mounted on my Gitzo aluminum without the ball head!
Easy to use and a snap to adjust.
            It's a great deal.

Comments about Sunpak Pro 724M Carbon Fiber Monopod:

I have been using this for the last week and have had an opportunity to shoot some nature and some dance performances.

Overall i am happy with how light this one is. I have not even realized that i have a monopod in my carrying case.

Then only downside i see to this - clamps are the screw type and it makes it very difficult to alter the height quickly. Often times, the Camera itself screws off instead of a portion of the leg clamp. If you are in a hurry do not use this.

My Bigma while on a nature shoot was stable and i had the time to adjust the height. IN a dimly lit auditorium, the dance recital was a different story. Everytime i tried to readjust the height, i had to take some time and as such lost some crucial shots. Thought for a moment - will shoot without the monopod, but the Bigma and the very low light made it difficult.

Comments about Sunpak Pro 724M Carbon Fiber Monopod:

Great for light gear, but for heavier cameras and camcorders, you'll feel a bit of flex along the joints. The monopod is really light for shooting on the go but for my purposes, a Steadicam Merlin was a better fit.

I am advanced amateur. I already have Manfrotto tripod and was looking for monopod.
I went to B and H store to choose one. I was not really concerned too much about the price. After looking at all floor models I decided why should I buy carbon Gitzo when almost the same carbon Sunpak costs much less? So far I am completely satisfied with this product.
