This product is great because allows you to charge your device without a computer nearby. it also provides a usb port so you can directly plug in an external hard drive or anything usb. with the av out port it really lets you share what you have loaded onto your archos without any hassles. comes with plug adapters for europe and england in addition to US, so it works almost everywhere (china hotels have US sockets with different voltage) because it can deal with different currents and voltages.

I have an Archos 605 160gig. I use it primarily for my daily commute on the bus. So my plan was to use the Archos internal battery until it ran out of juice, and then switch to the Battery Dock. This will not work. The battery dock will not power the Archos when the internal battery is empty. What it will do is charge the internal battery as you use it. It WILL run the Archos if you plug it into an A/C outlet, but there aren't any of those on the bus. The next problem is that it doesn't really attach to the Archos, it just plugs into the bottom. So it comes apart very easily. Also it means that I can't use my leather pouch when it's plugged in. On top of all that, when the dock is plugged in, the front speaker is turned off, so if more than one person wants to watch a movie or listen to music, you'll need multiple headphones and splitters. So it's not nearly as convenient as I was hoping it would be. also, the lights on the front don't seem to make any sense. When you plug it into an A/C outlet, the A/C light comes on. The charged light only comes on when the unit is FULLY CHARGED. Or the battery light alone comes on when you charge both the dock and the Archos at the same time. So it's impossible to get any idea of how much charge is left in the battery. On the Archos display it shows the battery with the lightning bolt in it that signifies charging, but not the graduated battery icon that shows how much charge is left.
On the plus side you can charge both units at the same time, and the Archos charges much more quickly than if you charge it using USB. Also, it's great for overnight travel. You can plug the unit into an A/C outlet and use it while it's charging. With the included composite A/V cables you can plug the Archos into a TV, although only in standard def. It also has both USB and USB Host inputs so you can connect it to your computer or a portable USB key and exchange files. While the design is a little awkward, it does sit nicely when you employ the rear stand or arm.

Small and very useful whenever your Archos runs out of juice. This is a must for all Archos owners. I must mention a great buying experience from B&H Photo Video. They are very professional [...] I'll buy from them again! Thanks.

The dock was great at first but after a few months of use, the battery life is only 5 minutes or so. Very expensive to only last as long as it did.

Comments about Archos Battery Dock for Gen 5:

Allows extended operating time when travelling, especially when watching movies or viewing large collections of photos where the viewing screen is on for extended period of time. (Viewing videos requires the LCD back light be on for the extent of the movie and that the hard drive be running most of the time to update the video display, both of which draw a lot of power and drain the internal battery quickly). This unit effectively extends the operating time for those long flights or trips in the car. Also provides easy access to USB connection for computer file transfer and AV out to TV monitor, and comes with quick charge AC adapter to charge and power the unit when in the office.
Con - The battery doesn't lock onto the unit (605) but mainly sits beneath the player so that it could fall off the unit when picked up - it's also sort of ugly as a pod that just sits under the player, but it is functional, just not well engineered in its design.

Comments about Archos Battery Dock for Gen 5:

When you are on vacation it is great. It charges the 605 fast and gives you about another 1 1/2 hours of playback (video) after the 605 built in battery dies. I bought two for those long plane rides or for the kids on trips in the car. Connects easily to any TV in hotel rooms ext... Nice and small, slips right into you pocket. I would recomend it. I have the av500 and with that model you can swap batteries. But for the 605 this is essential. It also can tranfer files back and forth between other archos, computer or any usb device.

Comments about Archos Battery Dock for Gen 5:

Allows you to charge your 605 MUCH faster than with the proprietary USB cable. In addition, it's an inexpensive way to output audio/video to a TV, transfer files via USB host function, and get some added battery life. The USB host function seems to work well with thumb drives and simple memory card USB converters. However, it doesn't allow you to transfer files both ways on all USB connected devices. For example, I was unable to transfer files to a Samsung MP3 player, although I could transfer them to the 605 just fine. Also, to get the maximum battery life, the battery dock should be connected before the 605 charge falls below 3/4.

Comments about Archos Battery Dock for Gen 5:

Now I have the Archos 605 80 gb for weeks and been testing the 605 and Battery Dock extensively. Here are the good and bad:

            Good:
It charge the 605 much faster without using the PC.

Connecting my Digital Camera (Canon Pro 1) using the battery dock works. It askes me to choose transfering all photos or to view photos.

Connect my USB thumb drive works but only can view content, can not do drag and drop file transfer. (Also my other external USB drives)

Bad - Doesn't extend the battery life like it said. I only get one and half hour more viewing time.
