I recorded fireworks with my Sony HVR-HD1000U camcorder and Audio-Technica BP-4029 Stereo condenser shotgun mic going through the Beachtek DXA-6A, and the results were fantastic! The HD1000U camera has its audio levels settings burried in an annoying touch screen menu, but with the Beachtek DXA-6A you can just set the camera audio to a fixed level, and use the attenuators on the adapter. The attenuators worked fantastic on the firework shoot. I managed to get good baritone sound from the fireworks, without distoring, and that's with a condenser mike! I mean, this is simply fantastic. As far as the little swithces on the adapter that set it to line level, I don't care much about, because for line level I use DXA-2S adapter from Beachtek as well, which has all the swithes easily accessible. So, if you can, I recommend to get both the DXA-6A and DXA-2S if you need to switch between line and mic level recording. The DXA-2S doesn't have phantom power which you don't need for line-level recording anyway, and the DXA-6A has phantom power to use it for mic-level recording, the both units complement each other perfectly. Oh, and the attenuators really have very good tactile feel, as you can feel the click and so you can manipulate the volume for both channels without looking at the attenuators. This is really great.

If you are using this for a Canon 5D Mark II and want to mount it between the camera and the tripod mount plate, you CAN't. There is an "extra" screw knob on the bottom, which wouldn't be a problem with most camera's but the 5D MII body only has the one screw hole to mount anything so it's impossible to secure, no matter which way you try it. The switches on the bottom are also in a less then ideal spot for switching channels.

Comments about Beachtek DXA-6A Audio Adapter:

I use it on my FX1000. It was pretty much designed for the thing. It fits perfectly and isn't too heavy. The phantom power is cool but I found it had some trouble with my lav mics. The balancing it good and all, as expected but you cant use the cams built in omnimic when you are using the XLR. That is a bit of a pain. Besides that it is great.

Good sound; stupid placement of switches

Comments about Beachtek DXA-6A Audio Adapter:

4 stars for excellent audio performance.
But if you use your camera on a tripod AND IF you ever have to switch from mic to line (or vice versa) during a shoot, BE AWARE that the switches for doing that are teeny-tiny switches on the BOTTOM of the unit. Meaning you have to remove your camera from the tripod, remove the Beachtek from the tripod adapter, change the switch, and remount everything.
In the earlier model, DXA-6 (without the ending "A"), these switches were easily accessible on the outside of the unit. The decision to make them teeny-tiny switches on the bottom of the unit was a very bad engineering decision.

Comments about Beachtek DXA-6A Audio Adapter:

We use this unit to run professional audio sources into our Sony FX1000 camera. It's indispensable for that purpose. However...
the connector wire positioning is not good, as an earlier reviewer noted. AND...
The switches to switch between Line and Mic mode are teeny-tiny and on the bottom of the unit. This is bad for two reasons:
(1)The switches are teeny-tiny. Unless you're carrying something with a teeny-tiny point, you're not going to be able to set them.
(2)They're on the bottom of the unit. VERY inconvenient. If you have to switch modes during a shoot, you have to dismount the unit & camera from the tripod, reset the switch, and remount the unit & camera on the tripod.
On the earlier DXA-6 (without the ending "A"), these switches were easily accessible and easily switched. The change to make them teeny-tiny switches on the bottom of the unit was a very bad engineering decision.

Comments about Beachtek DXA-6A Audio Adapter:

I use the DXA-6A adapter with my Sony HDR-FX1000 and it preforms great.

The only things I would change are the location of the coiled wire that connects to the camera mic jack and replace the coiled wire with a longer straight wire. The location of the coil is right between the two XLR inputs and makes removal and installation difficult for the XLRs. Also the coil wire is stiff and so it rubs against the zoom ring on the camera lens. This creates a problem when trying to use you're right hand to operate the zoom ring.

Function wise the unit does the job.

Comments about Beachtek DXA-6A Audio Adapter:

We use the DXA-6A on our Sony FX-7 with AT stereo shotgun and studio microphones in professional music and drama video projects. It functions beautifully. The unit is extremely well built and reliable. Experience has shown us that such adapters with built-in mic preamplifiers are prone to failure. Not so with this fine unit. Highly recommended.

Comments about Beachtek DXA-6A Audio Adapter:

I recently used this unit along with a pair of Rode M3 mics and a Sony PCM-D50 Audio Recorder to record a Beach Wedding. This unit did an excellent job of allowing me to get the audio from the XLR mics to the 3.5mm stereo mic input on the PCM-D50 with an absolute minimum of noise. I am very happy with the results that I got, first time out.

I use my video camera to record mainly rock bands and with this product I have achieved superb audio quality . So far ahead of using the onboard mic.It really doesn't add that much weight to the unit so I can still record without a tripod.

This is a great device giving the ability to connect broadcast quality audio sources to virtually any video camera. Provides phantom 48v power to condenser mics and is totally clean from an audio perspective.
