Still looking for the perfect bag...this one comes very close. I own a Lowepro Compurover AW and a Tamrac Adventure 9 bag. The Compurover is too heavy and you have to crack it open like an egg to get to the Camera compartment. The Tamrac is the perfect size, but you have to take the bag off and lay it on the ground or your lap to open the camera compartment, otherwise you risk spilling out all of your gear! Not good.

This Fastpack 250 intrigued me because the side access pocket allows access to your camera quickly without taking the backpack off. Guess what? it works. You really can get your camera out quickly while still wearing the bag.

I bought this as strictly a travel bag. I'm a pilot so I needed a medium sized bag that I could fit in the cockpit while carrying my 40D and 3 L lenses. I also need the top compartment of the bag to carry a few snacks, water and other supplies.

Okay here's the breakdown.

Pros:
1. Slim design, fits in cockpit and on top of my roller suitcase with ease. Also fits very nicely in the space underneath your seat in an airliner.
2. Side camera access in a serious advantage. I considered the sling packs, but I like the comfort and security of having a full backpack. The sling packs are uncomfortable after a while and hard to position to get your camera out without twisting up your clothes or coat.
3. It's lightweight and comfortable to wear. Significantly lighter than my other two bags.
4. Not as pricey as my two other backpacks.
5. Side pocket fits a good sized Nalgene water bottle.
6. Medium size and all black color doesn't shout "Camera Bag!" while wearing it.

Cons:
1. No all weather cover flap. A major oversight if you ask me. I took the one off of my Tamrac to use with the Fastpack.
2. No chest strap. I think it needs one.
3. It's almost a little small. I wouldn't go any smaller than this bag because you'll be leaving something home that you'll want later.
4. It needs a side or bottom strap that you can attach a monopod to. I'm thinking of having one sewn on. For now I've attached a carabiner to the top handle and strap on my monopod there.
5. Outside pockets are really worthless. They are sewn in flat and don't have room to expand. You can get a few filters and a flash card wallet in them but that's about it.

Like I said it's not perfect, but I'm giving it four out of five mainly because I like the overall size and design of the bag as well as the convenience of the side access camera pocket.

As in most cases, you often have to give something up to get something else. In the case of the the Fastpack 250, you compromise camera equipment space for daypack space and don't get enough of either. I purchased the Fastpack 250 to be used for carrying camera equipment, some snacks and a light jacket for photo daytrips. While I found the bag to be well made, it lacked the space I wanted to adequately carry the camera equipment I required for photgraphic day trips. Perhaps the Fastpack 350 would have been a better choice, but I preferred to keep the overall size in the realm of what would be accepted as carry-on for a flight. If I were to do it again, I'd forego the daypack and get a mid-sized photo backpack that would carry my Nikon D300, 2-3 lenses, a flash and a tripod. I found the fastpack feature which allows access to the camera from a side pocket without removing the packpack to be novel, but not always practical. In most cases, I just removed the backpack and accessed the camera by unzipping the entire compartment cover. The Fackpack lacks a sternum strap, which would help make the load less likely to shift when traversing rough terrain. Last, but not least, the interior backpack material has a very strong chemical/synthetic odor to it. I tried washing the interior, airing it out and even spraying it with a scented spray. After four weeks of use, the odor is as strong as ever. In conclusion, the Fastpack 250 is certainly better than the bulky shoulder bags I have become accustomed to using over the years, but falls short of what I would consider to be the ideal photographic backpack. Unfortunately, the ideal backpack, if there actually is one, would probably be far more expensive.

Comments about Fastpack 250 Backpack (Black):

I've had the smaller version of this backpack for several years, but needed some more room. This holds my DSLR with a 18-270 lens attached and has room for 4 other lenses (or 3 and a flash), plenty of room for my iPad mini, a small tripod and more. Haven't taken it on a trip yet but it rides comfortably even with the waist belt folded up and not in use.(I'm not likely to be going on any extended hikes except in TSA lines) It appears to be as well made as its smaller cousin which is a good thing. It doesn't come with a rain coat but I think the material could stand up to the occasional shower. I use it for storage at home and it helps that it stands up by itself. All in all, good value for the money.

So many places to put everything you need to cary. Camera area is very well protected from shock and from anyone trying to get into your bag. Traveled abroad with the bag and it was worth every penny. Not the most stylish bag, but it does the job better then anything I've seen.

    use for digital SLR camera
Plenty of room for camera (with lens) with space for additional lenses. In my case I have camera + 18-55 kit lens, a 28-200 lens, 100-300 lens, 50mm, plus a large flash and there's still room for another small lens. This is just in the padded lower camera compartment.
Above is room for batteries, chargers, phones, keys, cables a small tablet.
There is also a padded space for a laptop/tablet.
    has water bottle holder.
The camera is accessible via side pocket, you can remove the strap from your right arm and sling it around to the front giving access to the side entry.

The only reason to knock it a star is no provision for tripod and no rain cover.

The padding and space in the bag is excellent. I like that the bag stands up on its own and doesn't tip with a laptop in the bag. The straps are strong but could be a bit wider to distribute the load. My biggest concern is that the ZIPPERS do not seem strong enough. Nothing kills a bag more than a broken zipper, especially around the camera compartment.

I carry around a fair amount of equipment. On an average gig I have at least two camera bodies, a couple of lenses, and a Tascam Audio recorder set up. This bag accommodates that with ease and more. I was able to fit a DSLR with lens attached, two extra lenses, light meter, 35mm SLR with lens, audio package, Kiev 60 medium format camera with lens, a few rolls of film and my macbook pro all in this bag without struggle. It's a great no thrills bag that fits my needs and I couldn't recommend it more.

Comments about Fastpack 250 Backpack (Black):

I'm a pro-photographer, obsessed with finding the perfect backpack, and I've tried A LOT. I like this backpack. I really do. I've taken it around the country and on some intense hikes with a lot of gear. The storage space is the main gear area is great, and I love both front pouches. The waist straps are kind of bulky and annoying when you don't need them, but when you do (hiking long distances or running through airports with lots of other luggage),they are a life (and back) saver. HOWEVER, the side zip compartments for the laptop and camera gear are a fatal flaw in design, which have now cost me over a $[$] in gear repairs. I know it sounds like I must just be careless, but please know I'm about as type-A with my gear as they come. In both instances, I had my backpack up on an elevated surface and securely laying/standing in the CORRECT position to remove items .1. the trunk of my car and 2. a dining table. One time I unzipped the laptop compartment to get something else out and my MacBook pro literally slid out the side and onto a concrete parking lot. Granted, MacBooks do have a very smooth surface, but it happened so fast, there was no stopping it. Fortunately the MacBook still works, but suffered horrible aesthetic dents and scratches. Incident 2: Last week I opened the side pouch to retrieve something and my brand new 24-70 lens literally tumbled out the side and onto the floor. I now have a $700 repair bill. Please know the bag was laying FLAT on it's back on the table. But once you open the side zip pocket, there is no "edge" or anything to stop gear from rolling out that side. The same was true for the laptop. In BOTH cases, had there been TOP access points, the damages could have been avoided. I've had gear fall/tumble out before on the ground, but it was in-concequencial since there was no major impact. So, I'd recommend either accessing it on the floor in a kneeling position, or being EXTREMELY cautious (not good if you're in a hurry) when opening compartments from an elevated surface. Just trying to save someone else the same agony I have suffered with this pack.

Comments about Fastpack 250 Backpack (Red/Black):

This is a very well padded backpack that allows one to carry camera gear plus laptop with reasonable comfort and confidence that these items will not get banged up. The organization of the compartments is excellent. However, the idea that one could get items "on the fly" without removing the pack from your back is silly, and I quickly gave up trying. It is just a lot easier to take it off, get the needed lens or camera, and put it back on. More significantly, the lack of a sternum strap (omitted I would guess to allow the improbable quick access) makes the bag unbalanced when walking any significant distance, especially if there is a heavy camera in the large compartment. I improvised a front strap which I will use for longer hikes but that makes the entire backpack a bit complicated. In sum, it is a well build backpack with good padded compartments for cameras and computer. It just is not a great backpack for long walks without some modifications.

I have Lowepro bags all of them. This backpack is perfect for me. It holds a lot of equipment safely and securely. I would recommend this bag to anyone looking at a camera backpack. The biggest decision for me or anyone is what size?

Comments about Fastpack 250 Backpack (Black):

I really wanted a durable and versatile bag that was made for a short trip where I need to carry my 5D3, 2-3 lenses, my 13" MacBook Pro and and the same time to be as compact as possible, withour sacrificing quality and gear protection. I needed the computer storage and also wanted a tri-pod holder, side fast access, comfort, storage for a couple non-photo items. The Tamrac Expedition 7x Backpack is way too large and Tamrac Velocity 8x Pro Sling Pack doesn't accept the laptop. The Fastpack 250 does not have the tri-pod storage, no rain fly, nor extra loops/clips/straps(handy to attach accessories) but it is nice size. The bag is still worth it, and handled what I needed.
