Still looking for the perfect bag...this one comes very close. I own a Lowepro Compurover AW and a Tamrac Adventure 9 bag. The Compurover is too heavy and you have to crack it open like an egg to get to the Camera compartment. The Tamrac is the perfect size, but you have to take the bag off and lay it on the ground or your lap to open the camera compartment, otherwise you risk spilling out all of your gear! Not good.

This Fastpack 250 intrigued me because the side access pocket allows access to your camera quickly without taking the backpack off. Guess what? it works. You really can get your camera out quickly while still wearing the bag.

I bought this as strictly a travel bag. I'm a pilot so I needed a medium sized bag that I could fit in the cockpit while carrying my 40D and 3 L lenses. I also need the top compartment of the bag to carry a few snacks, water and other supplies.

Okay here's the breakdown.

Pros:
1. Slim design, fits in cockpit and on top of my roller suitcase with ease. Also fits very nicely in the space underneath your seat in an airliner.
2. Side camera access in a serious advantage. I considered the sling packs, but I like the comfort and security of having a full backpack. The sling packs are uncomfortable after a while and hard to position to get your camera out without twisting up your clothes or coat.
3. It's lightweight and comfortable to wear. Significantly lighter than my other two bags.
4. Not as pricey as my two other backpacks.
5. Side pocket fits a good sized Nalgene water bottle.
6. Medium size and all black color doesn't shout "Camera Bag!" while wearing it.

Cons:
1. No all weather cover flap. A major oversight if you ask me. I took the one off of my Tamrac to use with the Fastpack.
2. No chest strap. I think it needs one.
3. It's almost a little small. I wouldn't go any smaller than this bag because you'll be leaving something home that you'll want later.
4. It needs a side or bottom strap that you can attach a monopod to. I'm thinking of having one sewn on. For now I've attached a carabiner to the top handle and strap on my monopod there.
5. Outside pockets are really worthless. They are sewn in flat and don't have room to expand. You can get a few filters and a flash card wallet in them but that's about it.

Like I said it's not perfect, but I'm giving it four out of five mainly because I like the overall size and design of the bag as well as the convenience of the side access camera pocket.

As in most cases, you often have to give something up to get something else. In the case of the the Fastpack 250, you compromise camera equipment space for daypack space and don't get enough of either. I purchased the Fastpack 250 to be used for carrying camera equipment, some snacks and a light jacket for photo daytrips. While I found the bag to be well made, it lacked the space I wanted to adequately carry the camera equipment I required for photgraphic day trips. Perhaps the Fastpack 350 would have been a better choice, but I preferred to keep the overall size in the realm of what would be accepted as carry-on for a flight. If I were to do it again, I'd forego the daypack and get a mid-sized photo backpack that would carry my Nikon D300, 2-3 lenses, a flash and a tripod. I found the fastpack feature which allows access to the camera from a side pocket without removing the packpack to be novel, but not always practical. In most cases, I just removed the backpack and accessed the camera by unzipping the entire compartment cover. The Fackpack lacks a sternum strap, which would help make the load less likely to shift when traversing rough terrain. Last, but not least, the interior backpack material has a very strong chemical/synthetic odor to it. I tried washing the interior, airing it out and even spraying it with a scented spray. After four weeks of use, the odor is as strong as ever. In conclusion, the Fastpack 250 is certainly better than the bulky shoulder bags I have become accustomed to using over the years, but falls short of what I would consider to be the ideal photographic backpack. Unfortunately, the ideal backpack, if there actually is one, would probably be far more expensive.

Comments about Fastpack 250 Backpack (Black):

I am really happy with how comfortable this bagpack is. I can fit everything I need when I travel: camera, lenses, computer, wallet, kindle, etc.
It doesn't hurt your back even when it;s super full. It is a great investment considering the price.
The only problem I find is that I cannot find a good place where to put the power chord of my computer.

Comments about Fastpack 250 Backpack (Red/Black):

I have owned this backpack for a couple of years and recently purchased another for my mother, who is taking up photography. I use mine for occasional DSLR work and short-form video projects, in addition to personal travel. The top compartment has pockets for batteries, chargers, and a nice open space, which in my case holds that days' assortment of random items (for example lunch, batteries, sound gear, mini slate). The bottom compartment is the business end, housing camera, lenses, filters, and accessories in padded 'cells.' You can lay the backpack flat and open the flap to reveal the entire kit, or if you are walking you can sling the backpack to one side and access just the camera compartment directly while keeping the other items safely covered -- great for grabbing the camera when inspiration strikes. There is an additional zippered pocket that in my case holds a Zoom H4n, covered by the outer flap against weather and casual theft. For travelers or those needing DIT capability, there is a laptop compartment that handles 15" models comfortably. The backpack is very well designed, hitting a sweet spot between having enough storage and preventing bloat. Fully packed with gear and an old MacBook Pro, it is about as heavy as you would want a backpack to be for world travel or a short hike. Any bigger, and you would be in trouble. Any smaller, and you would not have the flexibility to pack what you need for different situations. The backpack itself is very light, but sturdy.Nothing bad to say about it. I've been happy with it since the start.

Comments about Fastpack 250 Backpack (Red/Black):

I bought the Fastpack 250 to use on a combination business trip and 1 day self-guided photo walk through Toronto. I needed something that I could use as a carry-on through customs that would store a laptop and my photo gear. The 250 was exactly as advertised. I was able to fit a laptop and iPad in the panel that extends along the back. I fit a camera body with 24-105 lens attached, a 75-300, an extra battery and charger, extra SD cards, 2 filters, and an external flash all in the camera compartment with room to spare. In the top I put all the charging cables, a security cable for the laptop, and headphones. The zip pocket under the safety flap on the back was an easily accessible place to keep my passport, itinerary and boarding passes. There were only two downsides: a) the mid-sized planes on my two-stage trip had overhead compartments that were too short to fit the bag without compressing it (it fit easily under the seat in front of me) b) I put a tripod in a separate carry pouch/sling in my checked bag. The 250 does not have straps or a compartment for the larger tripod I own.On the vacation day I took during the trip I locked my laptop in the safe in the hotel room and carried everything else in the 250. From before sunrise to well after sunset it was extremely comfortable and performed exactly as advertised. My next purchase will likely be a gorilla-pod or something of similar size that I am sure will fit in the top compartment.

This is a very high quality bag with lots of space for a DSLR (T5i) and two zoom lenses and a prime lens, charger, wireless remote, wired remote, manual etc. That's just the lower part of the bag. The upper part can be used for other personal items.

I bought this bag because it has space for my laptop too, which is handy when I travel. I haven't had the chance to take it somewhere yet, but liked it very much after stuffing all my camera and related accessories in it (except for tripod).

I bought this bag to get a bag where I can transport my camera, lenses, flash and laptop in the best compact way.
Actually, I can accommodate my 5D3 with 24-70mm f2.8L attached, 100mm f2.8L IS, 15mm f2.8 fisheye, Flash 580 EX II, MacBook 13", batteries, cards, cables and more. I can also insert the 5D3 with the 70-200mm 2.8L IS attached.
I normally carry a sling bag but cannot carry my laptop so, this bag works wonders for my purpose.

Comments about Fastpack 250 Backpack (Red/Black):

I bought this for vacations with air-travel where bird photography would be possible. I put a Canon with 100-400 zoom lens in the side-entry compartment, plus two binoculars (8x42 & 10x50). That still leaves the upper compartment for other items. The overall size is smaller than the carry-on maximums for airplanes. Very comfortable on my back.

Been using this backpack for a couple of months now and I can comfortably store all of my current camera gear inside this small looking but very spacious backpack. In the bottom compartment i got a Canon 6D with battery grip and my Canon 70-200mm F/2.8 IS II mounted on. and in the side storage spaces of this compartment i got a Canon 24-105mm F/4 & Canon 8-15mm F/4 Fisheye on one side, and got my other accessories on the other side being a flashlight, viewfinder, set of Vello extension tubes in their original box and a Canon 50mm F/1.4For the top general compartment i got all of my other accessories; Filters, batteries, cables for camera & laptop, external hard drive, camera remotes, blackrapid strap and original Canon strap, and even my gorillapod focus with ball head unmounted fits inside this compartment! And not to forget i got a 15.6'' laptop inside the back compartment. Also got a small pocket in front to put your travel documents or some papers you would like to take on-the-go.Fair to say that this is allot of gear for such a small backpack and still very good comfort while wearing it even when this backpack is so heavily loaded. There is only 1 very minor dislike, being you cannot attach a big tripod on the side of the backpack. Which is not the biggest concern (at least not for me). Conclusion: VERY good for its price.

Built very well, carries and fit great. The side open option for getting to the camera compartment quick and simple.

Purchased it for a weekend music festival photo coverage. Needed a bag that was big enough to hold 2 DSLR bodies, 70-200mm, 17-55mm, 11-16mm, flash unit, 15" laptop, plus little room for personal items, but small enough that it would not be too intrusive to other shooters.
Bit awkward to access equipment but it is a sacrifice to fit that much gear in its size.
Overall, it met my expectations, and great value comparatively to other options.

Comments about Fastpack 250 Backpack (Black):

Bought this for a trip to Far East. I needed a new bag, perhaps for one-time use that would let me carry and protect a specific selection of gear I'd decided to take. I carried a gripped D600, with SB700 flash and 28-300 kit zoom, 105mm 2.8 macro and 50mm 1.8. Also, a 13" laptop, extra batteries, chargers, cables. Also a small water bottle, folding umbrella, guidebook, itineraries, tickets, sunglasses, etc. The good: it held up fine to a lot of shoving into overhead bins, planes, boats, buses, trains, cabs. Everything was well protected. Lots of little interior storage places, and the "cord keeper" that comes with is simple but sheer genius. I KNEW I'd get rained on, so wanted the built-in rain cover, and that drove a lot of my purchase decision. But in fact, while it rained a lot, never while I was out, so I never used it! The bad: when this full, it is HEAVY (not its fault, really). But it's designed to hold a lot, and when fully loaded, the shoulder straps weren't quite what I needed after a few miles, and the waist belt, which is supposed to carry most of the load, since unpadded, got tiring to use. The haul strap is also unpadded, so not real comfortable when picking it up when full either. Don't expect that it is going to be as comfortable as your full-on expedition backpacking pack. With better padding on straps and belt, this nice pack would merit another star. But I think it is a good value if you don't need to carry the kitchen sink and /or don't need to carry your gear for more than a mile or two at a time. It's a well thought-out, competent bag at a reasonable price point, that will protect a lot of gear.
