I've owned the cheaper Quik Pod for a couple of years now, and it's been indispensable for covering trade shows where I need to get myself on camera once in a while. Two weeks ago I bought the higher-quality Quik Pod DSLR, and it's a tremendous step up in quality and usability.

Despite its name, the Quik Pod DSLR is good for just about any type of moderately sized camera of camcorder. I mostly use it with a Canon Vixia HV20 camcorder, and the Quik Pod DSLR handles it pretty well.

This aluminum Quik Pod is lightweight and sturdy, and extends to a length of 53 inches, which is just too long a distance to hold a camera steady while shooting yourself, but it's great for shooting over a crowd or just keeping a camera steady in monopod mode. When you are shooting yourself, the little mirror offers a little bit of help getting yourself in the frame (but not much).

The included accessories are pretty weak and flimsy. The actual mount attachment that screws into your camera's tripod mount point is cheap plastic--I'm skeptical that it'll last long. And there's an included gel pad that's supposed to help cushion your body from the end of the Quick Pod when you're holding it against your torso, but it doesn't come with anything to keep it attached to your body or to the Quick Pod, so it just falls on the ground a lot.

My final criticism is that this model doesn't fold as small as I'd like, so it's always clanking around as it hangs off the back of my gear bag during a shoot. If it could retract a few inches more, it could actually fit inside the backpack.

Overall, this is a good monopod at a great price. A worthy addition to any gear bag.

too large for a P&S, i wouldn't trust the Quick Pod DSLR with an EOS5D and a 17-35 zoom after a few try.
it is very well made though, comes with all the accessories and 2 different heads but may be more appropriate for a APS-C DSLR with a kit zoom.
i use it as a light to carry monopod with a 70-200mm f2.8 (w tripod collar), helps a lot when you don't have IS :-)
but not for the intended use as a boom-style handheld for self photography
If you use a P&S, you'll be better served by the smaller model

This is easy to handle and use. It has a higher weight limit than most other, thinner, more flimsy poles. It handles my D60 camera or Sony camcorder that weights 1.4 pounds. Easy to extend and use. Light weight.

Comments about Quik Pod Quick Pod DSLR Extendable Boom-Style Handheld Monopod:

I got this monopod the day before leaving on a photo/video shoot. When I took it out of the package I found that the nut that goes on the screw that holds the head into the monopod was missing. I had to scramble and visit 5 different hardware stores before I found a nut that would work. The monopod was essential to filming some underwater stuff with our GoPro cameras. Once I finished the job Quikpod should have finished, the product performed well. Too bad their quality control is lacking.

This product really is a great idea and it does work, but you have to know how to use the timer on your digital camera...that wasn't something I knew how to use before I bought this. Also, it can be difficult to extend and contract, the button you press down to do so needs a little bit of patience..overall, for the price, its a great novelty thing to have in order to take self protraits. The carrying bag is great for traveling.

I had their shorter product, but wasn't able to include as much of the background in the shots that I would like. This version solves that problem. It is a little long when folded, but I am coping by tying it to the outside of my gear bag. Much more solid than its smaller cousin, and rock solid. Great for outdoors use and for heavier equipment (SLR, DV, etc.).
