I'm amazed...

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 SL-II N Manual Focus Lens for Nikon AIS:

I haven't had much time with the lens yet (just got it today) but I'm already blown away. It's my first manual focus lens, and I'm surprised at just how much I'm enjoying it. It's sharp, and it has the ability to make backgrounds disappear in a way I just haven't seen with my other fast primes (or fast zooms for that matter.) As many others have pointed out, the construction is superb, and the focus ring is nicely damped. It just feels wonderful. When shooting with this lens, you feel much more connected to it than with your average autofocus lens, and I suppose you have to be, but it's surprising me just how much I enjoy it.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 SL-II N Manual Focus Lens for Nikon AIS:

I am shooting with SLRs and DSLRs for over 30 years. I have used a lot of lenses, and this one is just the best. the colors reproduction is great, the bokeh is amazing, smooth, painted like a brush. it is build very solid, and not so bulky as I would expect from a F/1.4.
portrait, landscapes, night shuts and even macro (with an EXT tube) all looking great///
I love it.

Very Nice lens

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 SL-II N Manual Focus Lens for Nikon AIS:

This lens has lots of character, excellent image quality. Built quality is very nice. A couple of things:
(1) If you purchased and use the lens hood (very nicely built hood which I leave on all the time), you might find it hard to remove/re-fit the 58mm lens cap. This is my minor complain. However, what I did was to use a 67mm lens cap which fits perfectly on the hood. A better option for me. 67mm lens caps are quite cheap.
(2) It's very easy to manual focus, very accurate with great results. However, it does not focus too close, just OK and wish it can focus closer.

Both minor complains. All in all for the price this is an amazing lens with excellent IQ and solidly built.
Highly recommended.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 SL-II N Manual Focus Lens for Nikon AIS:

I call it my magical lens. Amongst all of my lenses there is none other that produces the creamy, dreamy, painterly bokeh that the Voigtlander 58mm 1.4 does. It's definitely not the sharpest lens wide open. In fact it seems to produce halos around objects at times. But take a photo with the aperture in the wider open range (1.4-2.8) and something magical happens… as if casting a spell. If your subject matter can have something in the foreground and the background that can remain out of focus this lens will deliver some pretty stunning results. See the attached photo of a copper sculpture (about the size of a beach ball) with only one tine in focus… the rest is a painterly blur of dreamy bokeh. Another thing to keep in mind when using this lens wide-open is that the DOF is quite shallow, so if you're taking a group shot of say 5-6 people make sure everyone is in the same plane, otherwise you'll end up with a photo of some sharp and some blurry people even if they are off from that plane a mere 6-8 inches. I've come to expect the unexpected from this lens and as with any magical object – use it wisely and it will never cease to amaze.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 SL-II N Manual Focus Lens for Nikon AIS:

I almost bought this lens several years ago as a portrait lens for DX. Before I got around to it I got a D810 and forgot about it. I have a Nikon 50/1.8G because it's so cheap, it's hard to resist, but I've never taken much of a liking to it - small and light, but... I use a Nikon 60/2.8G macro occasionally and a Zeiss 50/2, but the Nikon at f2.8 is slow and the Zeiss is slippery and heavy. I'm also not a big fan of "normal" lenses, but this 58 feels a bit different and better for my needs. It's small, compact, not as heavy or large and slippery like the Zeiss and a stop faster. I prefer the slightly narrower field of view and it focuses just close enough (1.5 feet) that I don't miss a macro much of the time.
I've refined my daily FX kit to 20/1.8G, 24-85VR and 70-200/4 and this nice little 58mm.

I've also used it on the D500 and it's a nice portrait lens there after all.

The manual focus is superb, fit and finish excellent and optically it's wonderful. Sharp wide open in the center and stellar across the frame from f5.6.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 SL-II N Manual Focus Lens for Nikon AIS:

Great little lens! Images are sharp, even at f 1.4. Bokeh is magical. Yes, it is manual, but the aperture can be contolled from the camera, and the focus ring is smooth and has a long "throw". Plus, I really like the slightly longer focal length of 58mm vs. 50mm. Another advantage is that it is small and lightweight. I love it and totally recommend it if you don't mind manual focusing.
Only cons ( which is not a real con anyway, you can use another one if it bothers you): the lens cap is not very grippy. Other than that, I am very happy with this lens!

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 SL-II N Manual Focus Lens for Nikon AIS:

I have a special relationship with the Voigtländer brand. Growing up in Germany, my father had a Voigtländer camera (I wish I still had it!), which he used to explain the basics of photography to me. The satisfying "clack" of the exposure may have been the moment I fell in love with the mechanics of photography. I am now an enthusiastic user of Fujifilm's X-T1, and when I started building my lens collection, the search for a portrait lens brought me across this beautiful piece of optical art. Fuji's own 56mm being out of my price range, I started wondering how important AF really is for me in portrait situations. But I have to confess that until I owned and used the Voigtländer, I never fully understood how well it makes up for the lack of AF. The focus ring is nothing like the Fuji lenses in manual mode. You can't really emulate this experience with an AF lens in "manual" setting. The focus ring is buttery soft yet firm, and enables you to focus with confidence and speed (fewer turns needed to get where you need to be). With focus peaking enabled in the camera, it's truly not that hard to get a sharp image. Obviously, there is a learning curve, but I feel it's one worth the effort, and it will benefit your photography in more ways than you anticipated. The optics of this 58mm (which translates to a classic portrait focal length of ca. 90mm when used on a crop sensor like the Fuji) are impossible to describe. This lens deserves that term that much more expensive lenses are sold with: "art lens". Especially in low light, especially wide open, it produces images that are clear and clean and sharp, but have a sort of dreamlike quality. I don't understand the minutiae of optics that well, but I could swear that this lens "paints" beautiful colors. With a Metabones or Fotasy adapter, it fits the Fuji like a glove, looks like a million bucks, and feels just right. The focus ring has that charming "old" design with the crescent shaped indentations that I remember from my dad's old film camera. A trip into the past ... and into the future.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 SL-II N Manual Focus Lens for Nikon AIS:

This lens, like all the Voigts, is just wonderful to hold and use. Bokeh is superb, skin tones are super smooth, and it's sharp enough to satisfy the pixel-peepers, even at 1.4. Anyone that says it's soft and "dream-like" at 1.4 is simply missing focus. Of course it's gets sharp VERY fast - by 2.8 it's tack-sharp - but it's still more than useable at 1.4. If you're thinking about it, pick it up!

Depth rendition, color, and sharpness are all exquisite. The build quality is amazing, focus ring is solid metal and buttery to the touch, amazing precision.
Aperture ring also very responsive, clicking is there, of course, yet it is also smooth.
The results on full frame sensors are extraordinary on stills and video as well. Perfectly compatible with clickless power aperture on D750 when shooting 1080p video. Sharpness gets a boost there as well.
Get one of these. Extraordinary construction and results. A seriously underpriced gem.

So far, a very solid, clean piece of glass that far outshines my 50 1.4 D nikkor. A bit more expensive than the D, but more than twice as clear, and sharp. Only a manual focuser, but i've actually started using manual focus in portraiture at all focal lengths, and moving away from zooms and auto focus. obviously this isn't an event lens for children due to the lack of AF, but it still communicates with the camera for all other functions, as well as giving the "in focus" indication when attained.

This lens is amazing, the focus ring is like butter. The depth rendition is amazing, colors are amazing, a little bit dreamy wide open if shot in sun light, and is very sharp stopped down. Also need to mention when shooting in bright sunlight you need to stop down 1/2-2/3's of a stop because this lens overexposes (not a bad thing).

At first, I shot test charts and got disappointed. Then I thought it actually might allow me to grow as a NOT commercial photographer. I took it to a real shoot outdoors and it was wow! The bokeh of this lens is second to none. The focus ring is long, which makes the manual focus an easy and pleasant process.
My copy has a significant CA, which could not always be fixed in PP. I recall having nikon 50/1.4D sold for that reason. I could have called it 'analogue' and 'artistic' and continued to use.
The best application for it may be 2nd wedding photog. who is less constrained in choosing hardware.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 SL-II N Manual Focus Lens for Nikon AIS:

I was looking for a nice manual portrait lens for my NEX cameras. The classic legacy lenses like nikon 85 1.4 AIS were pricy and old, and their focal length is quite limiting.
I decided to go for the Voigt 58 and i am more than happy !
This lens is extremely well built. Clarity is fantastic and colors are great. Bokeh is creamy thanks to 9 rounded aperature leaves.
This lens is soft wide open. It may be useful for those who look for a dreamy picture. not for me.
At F2.8 it is tack sharp with lots pf detail. Surfaces look smooth which is a great virtue for a portrait lens because you don't want the skin to look bad.
The lens has a little CA at the edges but it is a minor problem that can be easily pixed in PP.
My conclusion: This is a really nice portrait lens with great character and good build quality. it is not perfect, but for this price it is better than the legacy lenses out there. I really like it.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 SL-II N Manual Focus Lens for Nikon AIS:

I use this lens for portraiture on Nikon D300 SLR, and on 35mm SLR film bodies. Since focusing is done at f1.4, which provides a hazy soft image, this lens is hard to focus on the ground glass alone. So I use the green dot in focus indicator in my Nikon to help me. The other focusing issue with this lens is field curvature. So unfortunately, too many images shot up close and wider apertures are not in focus unless they are in center of frame when both composing and exposure..

However if focus is nailed correctly, the portraits have a unique and very desireable combination of being both very sharp, and having a certain hazy glow to them - which flatters the subject.

I have had my D300 for 4 years now, and i finally start to appreciate what this camera is capabe of when using this Nokton 58 lens with it. The lens helps to remove the 'clinical' feel to the digital camera and imparts a highly competent "analogue" feel to these digital images. I have shot some film with it and the look on film is just as beautiful.

Please note that the images don't represent the lens fully. B&H hasn't updated the images to reflect the metal ring now being used on the new model. The optics are the same, and I like the metal ring better. So a bonus for us.

The build quality is awesome, and the focus ring is a joy to use. Must stop down to get the best sharpness, but you must do this with all fast lenses. Still very nice and usable at 1.4. Bokeh is second to none in this category and price. Buy and don't look back.

It feels so good in my hands.

I needed something fast that could actually be used wide open for dance photographs. Timing is everything with dance photographs, so auto focus in low light is worthless. I use it on a D700 and the results are fantanstic.

I use the this lens on my D7000 so with the crop sensor it makes an excellent portrait lens. I am a huge fan of the colour reproduction and bokeh this lens produces. It is also superbly built and sharp. Excellent lens my only concern is whether the zeiss would be better for another 200 dollars. As it stands this lens is excellent and I am very happy.
