FIRST LOOK.
Impressive in the box. Lots of LED's greeting you in an attractive housing. Trial batteries are included as are diffuser and 3200k gels. Pop in the batteries and , WOW.. its bright!

PROS.
A very easy to use 'eye/nose' light. Easily dimmable with virtually no color shift. Compact design and light weight, and a big plus of using standard AA cells, yet providing the ability to run off of external power [no cable or AC adapter is included]. Easy to mount on cam or light stand. Gel holder swings up out of the light path and is easy to remove. Enough light for 15' or so, depending on your camera and gels, etc.

TRY OUT.
Using a Sony VX-2000 camcorder with scenes about 10' from the subject, its easy to get a 9 dB reduction in gain with the MICRO cranked up full and no gel or diffuser in the older.. 6 dB with the diffuser and similarly with the 3200 gel in place. The light is slightly 'spotted' in shape and the diffuser softens this effect some, but you will have some fall off to deal with if you use wide angle settings.

Using a Sony HDR-1000U camcorder, the MICRO proved essential to getting better shots in poor light settings. HD cams are not really 'low light' devices, and CMOS chips even more so [compared to CCD's]. The MICRO helped reduce gain and black/color noise noticeably.

Using a Canon 40D still camera, the MICRO provides more punch because of the low light ability of the large imager in this type of cam and very high ASA that is available. Several pro's commented on how nice a focus light this could make. It sets up great eye highlights and off cam, hand held or on a stand, an accent light you can just 'dial' in.

Overall impressive to all who handled the MICRO.

CONS.
The mount allows mechanical wiggle and the head to move around, and it might be easy to damage should the light get whacked while moving the cam on a shoot. Some friction washer plates here could prove useful in stopping the wiggle and keeping the MICRO where it was pointed, yet allow easy repositioning of the tilt angle. The ability to swivel the head some could prove useful in some settings.

The gel holder [removable] is too lightweight and gels are quite difficult to insert. Also, unless gaff taped to the holder, they can fall out when the holder is pivoted upright. These are the Achilles' heels for the holder.

There was also some comment about the smaller mounting posts that might break if hit hard. However, the hassle of inserting/falling out is a major point worth some rework to make a more 'robust' holder that is user friendly. I'm sure they will be taking a look at this for future improvements.

Gel storage would be a great plus if a suitable location can be configured, perhaps on the back of the head.

CONCLUSION. [Litepanels® IS addressing the issues in this review].

Lamp unit: Well designed, bright, easily dimmable and NO proprietary batteries required.

Mount: Feels a bit too light for the intended use, should use care when moving about.

Gel holder: Missed the mark here. A redesign such that the gels can't fall out would make a much better experience for a user.

A versatile and useful light from a leading innovator in the lighting field. The MICRO could find a lot of application in your camera kit, whether you are doing video or stills and its power by ordinary batteries can save the day should you get caught with needing to replace them on short notice.

Bought this as an intended upgrade from my Sony HVL-20DW2. It is a larger light and has longer useful battery life (4 hours with 4 fresh AA's vs. 2 hours with Sony NFP960 in the Sony light). It doesn't get hot like the Sony light. The gel holder is also a great addition, and vital due to the light's daylight color temp and its primary usefulness being indoors. Being dimmable and adjustable for angle also help its case. Cast light is relatively even and soft, albeit with the charateristic barred-shadow look of LED light banks.

Unfortunately, maximum light throw is only comparable to the Sony light's 10W setting, often further hampered by the necessity of gelling the light indoors; with such short throw, the need of the dimming feature become questionable. After three uses, the mount has already begun to degrade and tilt at the slightest provocation, necessitating a fix with grip tape. The tilt adjusting knob is also difficult to manipulate while on most cameras, since it is on the same side as the mic holder. The gel holder interferes with the dimmer switch when raised, or drops down and blocks the top of the light, so it's best to remove completely when not needed.

Comments about Litepanels Micro LED On-Camera Light:

I use this light mounted on my camera for night shooting.
The dimmer control and gels come in handy for good light balance.
The only downside is this thing eats batteries quickly. Keep good rechargable batteries on hand at all times.

Use this for on the go shoots. It's really great when in a low light situation but you don't have the time or resources to plug in an actual light. Also great for filming wedding receptions.

Comments about Litepanels Micro LED On-Camera Light:

I am into Wildlife video making and photography, This light is handly and can fit into my bag, when shooting in jungles for micro subjects its very necessary to have decent light to get a good exposure for videos, there is no possiblity to carry big lights and this pocket light can help in these scenerios, i carry this along with the small 2 bescos lights which are even smaller than this but with very less light capacity, with 3 of the kit i am able to get enough light to shoot .
The built quality is surely acceptable provided the cost of it, secondly the mount provided is also very handy . The Dimmable feature is a key when it comes to changing subjects being bright or dark.
I would surely refer this to a friend, infact i have already refered it to a few folks who did order it.

Comments about Litepanels Micro LED On-Camera Light:

I needed an on-camera light small and light enough to fit into my airplane-carry-on case for my EX1. this light serves admirably for that. it's not expensive, dims down to completely out, is very lightweight.
since it runs on AA batteries, I can also carry a small charger in my camera case without using up much room. color looks good; excellent CTO and diffusion gels come with it, and fit securely. I only wish there were plus-green gels also. or that it had infinitely adjustable color temp and correction.
the light weight and small size are a big plus for me. they mean it is probably a bit fragile, but you can't have everything, especially at this price.
I'm glad I made the purchase.

The battery compartment was not designed properly. The AA battery not easy to take out unless you have solid nails to pull them out. This light is not powerful at all and I 'm not sure what situation this one can be at help.Another aspect is a price tag which is extremely high for this product.

I use this light regularly for HD video and feel that it is a great value- excellent lighting at a reasonable price. I use the higher-end lithium-ion batteries and get nice life before replacing. I do not like the cheap plastic used, however. I store this light in the box that it came in and when lifting it out of its plastic mold, one of the pivot corners for the filter frame (there are 2 corners) broke off. The frame still stays on luckily. Obviously this is a known problem because now the company sells the replacement frame for $22.

The Micro LED On-Camera light is portable which lends itself well to documentary style shooting when a full light set up is not an option. This LED produces a cool, balanced light which enhances the visual qualities of the cinematographers frame. Very light weight and quick to set up. The only negative is really attributed to the face my camera has only one shoe. I am not sure where to mount my wireless receiver.

This is a great little light, it does its purposed job but it does fell cheaper once you grab it in your hands, it helps with the weight because its so lite, I think the 4 batteries you need weight more. Over all a great addition to the camera bag.

2 of these LED lights provide incredible light. They are so small I can pack them easily along with tons of other equipment in a carry-on when I fly overseas. I do not use them on camera, but on two small Gorillapods. They come with a small set of filters, which is nice, but be warned, there is no carrying case or bag--which is strange and unnerving considering the price of each. Be sure to find some way to pad and carry these, as they are very fragile. But if you can find a safe way to transport them, they are worth the money.

I was introduced to this lovey little light at a recent shoot, and it basically saved the quality of the footage. We were shooting people dancing inside a dark ballroom, where you want to be able to see people's faces, but not shower the entire dance floor with light. This little light was perfect. It provides a very even light, and the dimmer and the gels makes it incredibly adjustable.
