At first I thought this bag was too small and was going to get the Tamrac 5374 Adventure 74 backpack instead which is a bit bigger and fits all my *necessary* gear quite comfortably with room to spare. But then I realized the true beauty of this bag is that it's so small and that it *cant* fit everything. It is a lightweight, grab-and-go kind of a bag that stays comfortable while walking around in the heat and humidity of NYC streets and subway all day. Its small, its portable, and it stays lightweight simply because you cant fit all the extra specialty gadgets that likely wont be necessary anyway.Currently I have it packed up with a Nikon D80 with Nikon 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 AF-S VR (attached or unattached), Nikon 50mm f/1.8 with rubber hood, Nikon 24-85 f/3.5-4.5 G ED IF AF-S with hood, and Nikon SB-600. When its all packed up, the bag definitely gets noticeably wider but it stretches effortlessly and doesnt need any *squeezing* or contorting to close the zipper. The front zippered compartment is a little too tight IMHO and I think Tamrac should reconsider its design. That said, it still works well to fit extra batteries for the camera and flash as well as a notepad and pens. But when the main compartment is packed up, its near impossible to reach to the bottom of that outer compartment without unzipping the whole thing and I have fairly thin hands and long fingers. It performs well in the rain, no leaks when I got caught in a serious downpour.Overall, its a good bag, so good and the straps are so comfortable I carry it almost everyday and everywhere I go, whether I think I'll be shooting or not.

Potential buyers who wish a compact backpack move up to the next size made by Tamrac. This is a "very" compact backpack. It is similar to a fannypack on your back.Good for one compact SLR or DSLR(very compact). No battery packs or motor drives attached here. One lens on body and one on side...and maybe throw in a flash.....thats it.As far as quality,Tamrac can't be beat. Will stand up for years.Very attractive in the green color.Just a little too compact for me.Word to the potential buyer....move up.Too much space is better than not enough.

Comments about 5273 Expedition 3 Backpack (Rust):

I've been wanting to get a new bag specifically for personal travel purposes and finally decided on the Expedition 3. As a professional photographer I've always used Tamrac products and love them. I needed something small and comfortable, but still with plenty of space. I'm really looking forward to taking this on my next vacation!

i like it, its small and can fit almost every thing i need when i travel. i carry my nikon dx40 with 50mm lens, along with my 18-55zoom and 55-200 zoom. for my flass i attached a small case to the outside of the bag on one side, on the other side i have another case strapped on to the outside that i carry other miscellaneous items, it also helps balance the load. when i travel by plane it fits in overhead with no problem. if it were any larger i would just put more stuff in it.

I like the convenience of putting the backpack on my back and not having a shoulder bag falling off all the time.
I don't have much gear (I'm a novice photographer) so it works fine for my camera and lens and there's still room for another couple lenses if you have them.
I like the ability to carry a tripod in the outside pocket.
If I get more gear down the road I may upgrade to the next size but would definitely look at this brand again as it is well made.

Comments about 5273 Expedition 3 Backpack (Black):

A well-built, useful DSLR backpack. Small enough that you can carry it on an airliner as your personal item (like a purse). Large enough to hold a big DSLR (40D, 5D mark III) with a few lenses. Will work with mounted lenses such as the 24-105 f/4L, the 28-135 and the 100 f/2.8 macro. I use it to hold a DSLR with lens, two extra lenses, plus a flash unit or a spare medium DSLR without a lens.

I bought my first Expedition 3 about six years ago, and it has worked flawlessly. The zippers still work correctly and the backpack shows minimal wear. I bought a new one recently to store a new camera, and it is nearly identical to the original.

The Expedition 3 is low-key, not looking too much different than a standard backpack. I made mine a little lower profile by darkening the embroidered Tamrac logo with a black whiteboard marker.

This backpack is not large enough to hold a 70-200 f/4L lens, but the Expedition 4 is amply large for that. The Expedition 3 does have attachments for external lens cases, however.

Realized upon opening shipping box that I had not read discription accurately; missed the "compact" photo backpack. However once began loading in my camera, telephoto len, flash, and other equipment found was much bigger than I expected. Great access to camera and equipment, and will be easy to carry and store on plane and train trips.

Comments about 5273 Expedition 3 Backpack (Black):

I have the small Tamrac Travel 71 and it is great for a DSLR without a handgrip when just taking one or two lenses. I was looking for something in the same size that would allow my handgrip. The Tamrac site shows that this model will work with a SLR with a hand grip. It does not. I am guessing I will have to go up at least one bog size for that to happen. B&H service great as always and not I will be making a return. Not happy with Tamrac as this will cast me it return shipping.

Great backpack for an afternoon hike or stroll around town. Fits my D800 and 24-70, and a smaller prime (i.e. 50 or 35mm) or a 910 flash. Not much space for filters, which is a significant issue for me, and the only reason I didn't give it more stars. Otherwise, very comfortable and the ergonomics are good. Easy to each, unzip, and access equipment.

Comments about 5273 Expedition 3 Backpack (Black):

I guess no one takes the time to actually pull out a tape measure or ruler anymore (as I do when I want to buy a new backpack). It's not rocket science people, you need storage, they give you different sizes and you figure out the rest from there. I especially love the "professional" that hates this backpack and shoots with a 40D. Really... a 40D... and you're a professional?! Right...I shoot many different cameras and own the Tamrac 8X field backpack, quite a lot larger and fits both my Fuji GX617 and my old Canon 5DII with a variety of accessories, no problem! That version however is over [$]. This is [$]. That one is meant to be larger, heavy and cumbersome, this one is designed for light travel and ONE DSLR and a few accessories.Tamrac makes some of the best backpacks for camera equipment IMHO. So much so that I no longer use my pelican case and keep several cameras in these backpacks full-time now. It's just so much easier. The crybabies whining about zippers that are hard to open and rain fly... return it! This equipment is clearly above your skill level. A good field photographer knows and understands the importance of solid construction, strong zippers and a rain fly that keeps out moisture and dirt. These things do their job well under most conditions and if you need additional wet weather gear you can buy a cheap aftermarket rain cover (like I did) that neatly stores inside and will cover your whole backpack in case of a down pour.Is it small? Yes. Could it be a little bigger? Sure. But that's why they offer the 5584, 86 and 88 models and a host of other sizes. Why do I give it four stars, because it's not the end-all-be-all backpack but what backpack is? Seriously, please tell me as I'd love to have it for long hikes and field shots where I have to hike and climb great distances.I bought this for my new Pentax K-5 IIs. As the Pentax is the smallest of my cameras and used as a 'walk-around' I wanted a 'walk-around' backpack to protect it with. I trust over [$] worth of my gear to Tamrac and wouldn't hesitate to recommend their gear to anyone. If this is too small for your needs... the problem isn't the backpack... it's you!

I WAS VERY IMPRESSED AT THE STURDINESS WITHIN THE BAG.AT FIRST I THOUGHT THAT IT WAS ALL CAUSE OF PACKING MATERIAL. IT WAS NOT & YOU COULD ALSO MOVE THE INSIDE OF THE VELCRO STRAPS TO ADJUST FOR EQUIPMENT. I DID SEE ANOTHER FROM SAME COMPANY WHICH WAS THE NEXT SIZE BIGGER BUT DID NOT SEEM AS STURDY.

I give this 5 stars for its lightwieght compact design and sturdy construction. I gave one of these to my grandaughter for her Canon XT outfit. It's great for one of the compact DSLR's like a Canon XTi or a Nikon D40. As the camera grows larger than these, the fit becomes quite tight. I thought I'd be able to fit my Sony A77 into it, but the 16-50mm f/2.8 is just too fat. I'm trading it in for an Aero 70.

This is probably the perfect bag for a compact DSLR with a kit lens attached and room for a couple of lenses and the charger. I used one for my first Rebel XT and is was ideal - nice weight and held the two kit lenses (one on the camera) plus 580ex flash. So I thought I'd get another one for my Sony A77. I'd given my Rebel outfit to my grand daughter so I didn't check the fit for the A77. Whoops. The A77 with the very nice f/2.8 16-50mm Sony zoom attached cannot be squeezed into this bag - too fat. It appears that anything bigger than a Rebel or a D40 size camera is a press fit. So I'm trading it in for a bag that hold a pro-sized DSLR with lenses.

Bought the Tamrac Exp 3 Backpack after looking for something small but with good capacity. The Expedition 3 offers very good padded protection for the camera and gear. The pack is a fairly recent purchase so I have not yet put it "through the ringer" to test it out.

My overall rating is 3.5 stars

i had this pack before, but gave it to my daughter, I thought I wanted a bigger one to put everything in. The big one was too heavy, so I bout this one again for myself. I think it is the right size for SLR.

rugged build, but tight fit for my gear. i have a nikon d90 with battery grip, 18-105mm, 50mm and 70-300mm and i won't be able to fit another lens or flash. really like it for now, but as soon as i get more gear, i'll outgrow this pack. will then be a great day pack.
