As part of my job, I often need to take pictures indoors, under poor lighting. This is the first hi-resolution "point and shoot" digital camera I have found that performs well under those conditions.

Most digital cameras are unable to take good pictures without a flash and with a flash they will wash out the foreground while leaving the background too dark. That's not a problem with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 - it is able to take great pictures in low light without having to use a flash.

I have used this camera without a flash inside manufacturing facilities with horrible lighting and still gotten great pictures. I have also used the camera to take pictures of my daughter's band concert in a dark auditorium - without a flash - and still got bright, good quality photos.

I have also used this camera for recording video - the resolution and quality are excellent.

The camera has several features which make it easy to get a great picture in a variety of conditions. The optical image stabilization, auto-focus assist lamp, and intelligent auto make this camera a joy to use.

The responsive CCD, 10x optical zoom and Leica lens give clear, bright, vibrant pictures. Most cameras that have such a great zoom and picture quality are too large and awkward to be practical for quick shots and comfortable carry, but the DMC-TZ5 is still small enough to fit comfortably in a pocket. I find myself taking it nearly everywhere.

This is a great "point and shoot" camera - the best I have tried. It is not, however, a professional quality camera and has only a few manual controls. There is no manual focus, shutter, or aperture control.

Another drawback of such compact, "point and shoot" camera is that the screen does not swivel, so it is more difficult to get those shots from the back of a crowd. Also, there is no optical viewfinder for use in bright sunlight - which can make it difficult to see the image on an LCD screen.

Fortunately, the DMC-TZ5 has a very large and bright screen which is more visible under these conditions than the smaller, dimmer screens found on other compact cameras.

When I was price shopping for this camera several sales people told me that the battery would only last "15 to 20 minutes" and recommended purchasing a spare battery. I have not found the battery life to be a problem. I have used the camera for several hours without having to recharge the battery. I have taken several pictures and a few videos as well as playing the videos on the camera all with very little drain on the battery. The only thing I found that seemed to dramatically affect the battery life was using the flash. If you will be taking a lot of flash pictures you will probably want to invest in a spare battery.

Overall, this is an absolutely amazing camera. It's small size and fantastic functionality can't be matched by any other "point and shoot" camera I have tried - none of the others even came close.

...if only it was made by Canon. The TZ series have everything you might dream of for a compact camera - outstanding Leica optics, breathtaking LCD, good OIS, tons of features, excepted what makes good pictures: a proper image processor.

The Venus Engine IV will only deliver good images at its lower ISO setting (100) and under bring sun conditions. Anything else will be plagued with heavy noise and artefacts. I mean VERY visible on 50% crops already.

Dark areas in very contrasted images (like snowy mountains with forest/rock patches) will in addition get heavy-handed softened. Rather say blurred actualy. Get ready for systematic post-processing, and forget about ISO400 and up.

My $93 Nikon Coolpix L11 takes better-looking pictures, what a disappointment...

HD video is nice on paper but disappointing too: while the internal playback engine is perfectly fluid (.MOV files), Quicktime player will show shaky images (deinterlacing issues). Built-in microphone's gain is poor at best, and its placement directly... under your left index finger.

Modes selection rotary dial is loose and half of its revolution is not assigned to any feature, so 50% of the time camera will turn on in "dial not in proper position" mode. Which means every other time you pull it out of your belt case. The other time it's the connectors cover with will accidentally flap open, because it is just ill designed and misplaced on the side you hold/manipulate the camera.

Finally, the mount thread in located on the far left side of the bottom, completely off-balance. How practical...

I have purchase two TZ5 within one month and both had the very same issues - so it is poor design, not manufacturing defaults.

In resume: if like me you do need that 28-280m in point & shoot format you are doomed to buy the TZ and live with its defaults. If not, run away from Panasonic and get a camera made by a company whose engineers have ever actually used their products on the field.

Comments about Lumix DMC-TZ5 Digital Camera (Blue):

Like many of you, I also spent much time researching a good point and shoot. I like to get a new one every few years because the technology changes so fast. So far I'm very happy with this camera. Love the 3" LCD, it's very clear, pictures come out crystal clear, and is so easy to use. I also use Canon and Pentax cameras, and this one surpasses them on clarity of the picture. Very happy with this purchase.

Comments about Lumix DMC-TZ5 Digital Camera (Blue):

I bought this as a walkaround camera for when I don't feel like lugging my DSLR but want to capture great memories.
The camera does all it claims. Very comfortable to hold and easy to use. Focus is fast and it does a great job at its auto settings White Balance is generally on target and the produced colors are vivid and accurate. The 10x range makes this an excellent choice for an all-around pocket camera.
Low light operation is noisy as it is with all small CCD format cameras. But anything within the flash range (about 10 feet) is fine.

This is my first point & shoot without a viewfinder... really miss it. Was surprising difficult to use this camera in the sunlight because you could not properly judge the subject from the lcd... especially while using zoom photographing wildlife.

Comments about Lumix DMC-TZ5 Digital Camera (Silver):

The only two reasons I gave this camera a four-star rather than five-star rating is the newer version (ZS3) is out and I would have probably ordered that if it had not been backordered, and I do occasionally find the subject is blurry when set on the Intelligent mode. Other than that, the video is nice and you can zoom while recording, the photos are generally beautiful, the zoom is absolutely amazing (both at the wide and tele ends), the downtime between photos is relatively short, and the battery life is pretty great.

        Thank you, Panasonic.

Comments about Lumix DMC-TZ5 Digital Camera (Silver):

I was convinced I wanted the Sony DSC-W290, but was told to give this Lumix a chance. Not only is it more affordable, the pictures are great and the zoom is outstanding! I am thrilled with this camera, and find myself lugging my Nikon D80 SLR around far less and still capturing great shots. This puppy does it all.

It seems bulkier, but the capabilities are well worth the size. Also, some photography die-hards might be turned off by the limited controls on the settings dial, but the auto setting is great and selects a setting far better than I would have on a moments notice. Plus, there are plenty of self controls that come easily once familiar.

All in all, with HD video, 10x zoom and all around great performance, this camera exceeded my expectations.

I've bought a number of point and shoot digital camera over the years. I would have to say that this is the best one I've ever owned. It has a 10 power zoom lense, most only have 3 - 4 power. It is also very easy to operate and the pictures are outstanding. I have recommended this camera to a number of my friends.

Requests for reviews usually arrive soon after the product. I've waited to respond until I had time to know the camera well. The camera has very many options that allow people of varied expertise (from the novice who will stick to "IA" automatic camera programming to the pro who will adjust white balance, etc.) to fully satisfy their expectations. The focus range, from extreme close-ups to 16X telephoto is impressive, the Zeiss lens is very good. My only regret is the lack of a viewfinder...like other cameras, daylight washes out LCD screen even when set to bright.

The camera is a bit on the heavy side other than that is an awesome camera.

Pretty small for a 10x zoom... but you're not gonna be putting it in your pocket.

just a great camera. i bought this based on reviews, since i wasn't able to see it prior to my purchase, but it has exceeded my expectations! very easy to use, fits in hand well, great size - not too small or large and most importantly excellent photo quality. strongly recommend this camera.

I use the DMC-TZ5 to take pictures for our condo website. It came ready to use and the setup was a no brainer. Very easy operation. Great 3" screen with simple menu to operate and change settings.

Am very happy with this camera. Use a Nikon Digital SLR for most photos, but wanted a small point and shoot for all occasions. This suits perfectly. Love the optics, the video, and so many great features packed into a little inexpensive camera.

Comments about Lumix DMC-TZ5 Digital Camera (Silver):

I bought this pocket-sized, 9.1 MP camera for travel with restricted luggage, because of its low cost yet impressive range of features. Its HD video can zoom while filming, using its 10X zoom. I tried it out for stills and video at home and discovered that video files did not import directly into iMovie but if I opened the file first in QuickTime the .MOV files could be imported. (Note that I am a Mac user and did NOT use the software that comes with the camera.) This was an easy work-around. The camera saves a low-rez thumbnail photo plus the video. It has image stabilization, which was impressive. I hand-held the camera, indoors, yet the video was not jerky. The microphone was sensitive. I learned that when I was filming outdoors, walking, it captured my breathing, so I will note the microphone location and be careful about that.
A terrific feature is that it takes a 16 gigabyte, Class 6 (fast) card! Tip: Buy one that offers a small USB reader along with it, as my multiple-format card reader did not read this high capacity card. I was glad I bought a card that came with a small reader, half the size of a flash drive, because it made downloading easy and takes up less space than a stick of gum. I bought an extra card too, since video eats up memory. This should take me through a day of almost constant image captures. I also travel with a spare battery, but always run the current one until it has no more juice to be sure I don't shorten the life of the battery. New batteries claim this is not a problem but I play it safe.
The video quality may not prove to be as fantastic as that of a dedicated camcorder, but it will be perfect for catching that unexpected opportunity and you'll have it at hand. Word of caution: Keep the camera in a plastic sandwich bag in your pocket if traveling in hot, humid climates or damp places; it's not waterproof.
I cannot believe how versatile this camera is, particularly at this price. I will leave my camcorder at home and appreciate the size, weight, features and portability of this innovative camera.
