I bought this device with two applications in mind: recording band rehearsal and recording live shows. After having owned the DR-1 for a couple weeks, during which time I've used it for two 90 minute rehearsals and one 2 hour long show, I can say that I am extremely satisfied with it.
Here are some things I really like about the DR-1. It's light, simple to use, and has an adjustable microphone. It provides excellent recording quality for loud rock music, for everything from loud drums to bass/guitars to vocals. I've so far only used the 320 bps stereo mp3 setting, for which the included 1 GB SD card provides over 8 hours of storage. Transferring the files to my laptop is a snap, since my laptop has a built in SD card reader. (I use Audacity to read in the big mp3 file and chop it into individually named per-song/idea pieces.) I haven't used any of the advanced settings yet, mostly because I haven't needed to. The battery (which I recharge via the USB cable) comfortably lasts at least a few hours.
I haven't really found things I don't like about the DR-1. I suppose it would be nice if it had at least a rudimentary built-in speaker to do a reality check on what it's recording, but in practice I always have iPod headphones with me that I can use to check how it sounds. It has also crossed my mind that having a tripod mounting screw-hole could be useful, but so far I've been able to position it properly, either lying flat or standing on end, with the microphone angled as needed.
Naturally you're not going to get the kind of quality you'd expect from a 4-track recorder with mics placed around the room, but then again, the DR-1 does a great job considering how simple it is to use. You just set it to record, adjust the input level a bit, and forget about it!
In summary, get one of these. Your bandmates will thank you.

I bought the DR-1 to record from my Alesis Multimix 8 FW as a backup the the firewire recordings. In that capacity it has been perfect. Sound recorded through the line in mini jack is 100% clean. Transferring the files is easy. Good rechargeable battery.

Now for the bad stuff. When I opened the box, the first thing I noticed was the cheap, lightweight feel. The buttons feel cheap, the wheel that you use to navigate menus feels cheap, everything feels cheap. Also, it doesn't come with an AC adapter, you have to buy it separately. Navigating the menus is difficult, it took me a long time to figure out, after changing something in the settings, how to get back to the previous screen without completely leaving the settings section (fyi, you press the rewind button...?) Lastly, I was not impressed with the mics. You could never use this thing hand held, there is way too much handling noise. I thought the voice recordings were tiny. Other people with more experience than me have been impressed by the quality of the mics, so take my remarks with a grain of salt (it's not what I bought it for anyway, I just thought it would give it a try). If you do want to use the mics, I recommend the accessory kit or you will have plosive problems and handling noise.

Comments about Tascam DR-1 Portable Stereo Audio Recorder:

I use the DR-1 mainly to quickly record a song idea. I also use it to record rehearsals and performances as a second set of ears. I like the ability to overdub. I like the ability to add reverb. I wish it didn't record the sound of the turning on and off of the recorder. Of course, you can edit that out with software. I like the use of the SD cards, allowing for memory expansion. Powerful little handheld unit.

Comments about Tascam DR-1 Portable Stereo Audio Recorder:

Great price. I don't think they even make these anymore - the newer models dont have the built-in effects and the auto-gain like the DR-1. This is my 3rd one (the other 2 were stolen). [...] I bought the insurance and hope I dont have to use it. We use this recorder to record all our practice sessions and also hook it into the PA for live recording at gigs. My only complaint is that it's easy for someone to walk off with :-(

Comments about Tascam DR-1 Portable Stereo Audio Recorder:

Very Easy to use. Menu options easy to follow and the quality of sound of great.
I use this for guitar practice and record rhythm tracks to play along with and record music from albums to figure out riffs, etc. It has the standard 1/4" input jack for guitar and also has an 1/8" input mic as well as the built-in external mics. It has a great option to slow the speed of the song without compromising pitch. It also comes with a tuner and a metronome. I've used the tuner quite a bit. Nice option. Metronome not so much. Battery life seems to be very good.
The only down side is when recording using the built-in mics, you get alot of noise from handling the recorder. It's best to set the recorder in place and then record live music. Also, minor point - the scroll wheel seems a bit cheap and too plastic. Also, I wish there was a way of naming the recorded music. It just assigns a default name (unless I'm missing something).
Overall, great recorder for the money.

I needed to find something to record our praise and worship music at church for evaluation. It does a great job and is easy to use. I do wish it had an external speaker for play back, but it's easy to transfer music to computer. I wanted a unit that didn't eat batteries. That's why I got the one that I could charge. Lasts quite a while before recharge. Tascam is a great product. Have used their stuff before. (retired music teacher)

We use the DR-1 portable audio recorder to record classes and post them online. The recordings come out very clear without even using the external microphone. Our only problem has been finding the time to recharge the battery because it requires that your computer be on when charging with the USB cord. But we have just ordered the AC adapter so we will be able to charge it by plugging it into an outlet which should make it easier.

Comments about Tascam DR-1 Portable Stereo Audio Recorder:

I bought this product to record voice using the built in microphones and to record the Sunday sermon using the line-in.
The sound quality is great using both the microphones and the line in. I noticed that this recorder has a much higher dynamic range (at least using the line in) than our previous one, I tried them both at the same time and my old recorder would peak at half the gain as this one.

There are two features that I found particularly interesting, one is the orientable microphones (90-180 degree) and a record delay when recording with built in mic (will record 0,4 sec after you press the record so that it wont record the sound of your hand touching the recorder)
because it will pick up any and every touch or manipulation, avoid at all cost touching or handling the recorder when recording or you are in for more post prepossessing.

This is not a compact recorder, I consider myself having big hands but I find it too big to use one handed comfortably.

Comments about Tascam DR-1 Portable Stereo Audio Recorder:

I use the DR-1 to record my sons choral group weekly rehearsals so I can distribute MP3 copies to the kids. I previously used a PC with various microphones including USB mics with only low quality results. The results from the DR-1 are vastly superior to everything else I have tried.

The menus are a little cumbersome and how to adjust some of the input settings could be more intuitive. I feel the product capabilities are solid and I will probably give it a 5-star rating once I am more familiar with all the controls. Recommended.

                            Cons

The bottom side is smooth and the edges are rounded. It would be better if it were textured to reduce the possibility of dropping it.

                            Overall
I like the product and would buy it again.

This is a great buy for the money. great sound capturing capability. Very Very sensitive. will capture noise from you picking it up while recording. One thing is I wish it had a speaker so you could listen to what you have recorded on the spot. To listen you have to plug up your headphones. came with quarter jack, memory card, lapel mic, and soft case. If your a little techno savy its kinda easy to operate. overall I would recommend this if you don't have the doe for a higher end field recorder. gets the job done with quality.

Comments about Tascam DR-1 Portable Stereo Audio Recorder:

I play stand up base in a Swing band and this device is regularly used for recording.
Recording the sound of the stand up base is phenomenal! Reel deep sound compared to other devices. Besides that is the recording time enormous on a 4 gb SD.

Also is it usable as a microphone for your PC wich is very handy and also of good quality.
