it is fast to focus . im impressed with focus speed .in the day time. it dose not bounce around looking for focus. in low light it will hunt a little. when zoomed in on a spider and its web.but it will focus sharp on it with out tripod . it is not a low light lens . how ever if it is your only lens .doing a low light your iso will be extra high. and a slow shutter speed .best to use tripod in this case .back in the day time. your going to be very happy. with its focus speed and zoom. i have snaped a lot of picture of birds flying. i can zoom in and get pictures. with out them flying off .i enjoy using this lens outside .manual focus is Smooth . along with zooming in and out. both are smooth .the switch for AF to MF is postive click. not loose or sloppy feelling. the focus lock button. it is soft and very short depress. how ever when the Petal-Type Lens Hood is on. getting the cover on or off is tuff. best to take off the Petal-Type Lens Hood when putting cover on. getting the cover off is a reach with the fingers . but can do with it on. when attaching the lens to the camera. it is a good fit when locked in . with no movement in or out. it dose have a tiny bit of clocking movement.it is very tiny you cant see it . how ever you can feel it. but not when focusing or zooming.i dont see a problem with it . but i thought i would tell you about it .

For the first two years of use, this was a great lens. Then, on vacation, or simply decided to stop autofocusing past about 20 feet. Other lenses work fine on my body do I know it's the lens. This is totally unacceptable for a lens with no scratches or damage. Never been dropped or banged around and get it just stopped working.Once, when trying to diagnose by swapping lenses, I got lots of motor squealing and other weird noises when planning this lens back on the camera. For ask of these reasons, and the 1 year warranty (which means I'm probably out several hundred dollars to fix this) I can't recommend this lens. I'll admit this is my first Sony/Minolta failure in 30+ years, but all the more reason to think this is simply not as well built as the older equipment. A [$] lens should last more than two years in my book.

Comments about Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G Telephoto Zoom Lens:

I love nature photography and this lens is a wonderful addition to my kit. The SSM technology is really great. I have the Sony a77ii with APS-C sensor, so I have a little longer reach when I am fully zoomed in to my subject. It's fantastic in good lighting conditions, but you do suffer from graininess when the light is not so good. After all, it is 4.5/5.6 aperture, but other than that it is a great lens for the price. It's light too. I would definitely recommend this lens. It's a keeper.

Comments about Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G Telephoto Zoom Lens:

Had to return due to a peace being loose. But I did get to take a couple pictures with it & they looked great. A little soft at full zoom & was a bit heaver them my Tamron 18-270. But over all could be a bit better for the price.

First of all this a very well made lens. It is part of Sony's "G" series and worth the extra price. Quality feel, quick focusing. It is very sharp and I've gotten some great pictures with it. But it is also surprisingly light weight. So if you plan on hiking you won't mind bringing this lens with you.

I use this lens on a sony nex 6 and it has given me the ability to really zoom into nature. Putting this lens on my camera gives me about a 450 zoom capacity. The pictures are sharp even when I am holding the camera and the weight is still incredibly light.

Comments about Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G Telephoto Zoom Lens:

This is my favorite telephoto zoom of all time. I use it on an A65. I really have NO complaints about this lens. It is sharp and has excellent contrast. AF is dead fast and reliable. Easy to manual focus as well. Very nice bokeh. This brings me to the reason I switched to this lens from the Sony 70400G. Although the 70400G is an excellent performer, I found this bohek often times to be harsh. So the better bokeh and smaller size/weight of the 70300G brings this lens over and above the extra 100mm of focal length of the 70400G for my use. Both are super, just my preference. But let me tell you, this 70300G is a sweet lens ! I use it mostly for birding on a tripod, but it will also work well for portraits on the short end. Highly recommended.

Comments about Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G Telephoto Zoom Lens:

I absolutely love the lens. It is exactly what I expected. Sony always produces high quality gear. f/4.5 operates poorly in low light, but does great when you boost the iso. Works amazing in reasonably lit settings, even sharper with a tripod. If I could have forked over another grand I would have gone for the f/2.8, but that would also be odd for me walking through streets w/ a lens that size.
This lens is a perfect fit for the kit I needed. I wanted to see what it would be like operating at a 300mm focal length.
I can't wait to see what Sony comes up with next!
The focus lock is perfect and I don't want to buy a lens with out it. Handy having it right on the barrel, lock it recompose and shoot. Perfect.
              ENJOY!!!

This lens got a 700 foto induction after receiving it while traveling. It is light enough to carry along all the time and versatile for city and country assignments. Modern camera ISO ranges compensate for the reduced aperture . This, together with a 18-85 zoom likely cover 95% of my travel needs. Fast and silent motor is very useful.

Need a lot of light, but typical for a telephoto anyhow. Very well made and high quality. Very pleased so far.

Maybe the best practical telephoto lens

Comments about Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G Telephoto Zoom Lens:

I'm an amateur using an A55 and value the light weight of this lens considering the impressive glass and solid build. I love the colors (could be better than the 1680Z) and ability to shoot at any f-stop with very sharp images, the fast and silent focus, almost no CA/fringing, and smooth and pleasing differential focus.

Also having the Sony 16-80 CZ lens (my favorite all-around lens) and Sony 18-250 which both use 62mm filter diameters, I'm able to interchange filters easily. Reviews have mentioned that the lens could have gone with a much smaller diameter, but I'm not complaining! I'm able to permanently keep my seemingly scratchproof Hoya HD UV filter attached and stack a Hoya HD cir. polarizer (both 62mm) on the field without ever exposing the lens element.. and still no added vignetting! Interestingly, none of the lens hoods fit any of the others which would have been nice to hide the godzilla of a lens hood that this lens has when using around the city. I end up not carrying the lens hood but the 70300G doesn't seem to need or benefit from it at all for most conditions. I figure it will come in handy for a day when I'm shooting outdoor sports.

The lens feels like it is built to last and I'm treating it as a long-term investment to use many years from now when I'll actually need to use it. I grin at every chance to use this lens.

I have to mention the great experience I had with B&H on this order. Bought online but lens had a defect with autofocus (would not autofocus at any distance in daylight!), probably as a result of shipment as the Sony box was dented in one corner, although there was an outer box and appeared padded. I took it to the B&H superstore in NYC to the returns department, where I mentioned I like the product but this one has a defect and would be happy with just replacing the lens itself instead of all the contents of the box (hood, lens case, etc). Friendly person just quickly glanced at the box I returned (did not inspect actual contents; what if I returned the cheap 75-300 lens?!), went to look at the back room and was back in about 2 minutes with a brand new box! I tried it out on the spot and verified it didn't have the AF problem. Thanked the person and walked out with a big smile! Will buy from B&H again!

Comments about Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G Telephoto Zoom Lens:

I bought this lens a week ago, together with Sony's LA-EA2, and found it surprisingly well balanced with the small NEX. Focusing was very quick and I was delighted to see that my images were sharper than what I was able to achieve with my Canon 1D Mark IV and 70-300mm L zoom -- although with so many variables in play between the two combinations I can't say the Sony is sharper than the Canon. Fit and finish of this G series lens is excellent. I really appreciated the lighter weight of the lens and NEX body, even with the adapter thrown in for good measure. I'm looking forward to getting an NEX-7 when it finally becomes available and putting this lens to work with it.

Apears to be well designed, going to use mostly for wildlife. I only tried it once as i hurt my shoulder doing something else :( Ill try to give a better review at a later time, sorry!
