There are lots of nice reviews for this head so I'll say something new. Unlike a ball head and probably other pan heads, this head is offset. This places the center of balance not at the camera plate screw but AT THE PLACE WHERE THE LENS CONTACTS THE CAMERA. That means that when I put my 70-200 lens on my Canon 5D, IT NEARLY BALANCES! No need for a lens collar. Put a little 50mm on my Rebel IT NEARLY BALANCES! And I get zero vibration. You wont believe how nice this is till you try it. I would like to try a ball head for speed of setup but a one pound ball head with the stability of this Manfrotto costs $. I repeat: this head is so stable because of its forward balance. I have no idea why they state this head supports only 6.6 lbs. This thing is solid! Plus after 5 years with this head here is something I just learned to save time. Set your camera in and snap the quick release shut. Then loosen both upper knobs. Now the camera pivots in all directions just like on a ball head. So finding your composition is equally fast. With a ball head you then tighten one knob. With this head you tighten 2 which is fast and easy. Its so easy now. For you particular shooters you can still use it like a pan head and set your horizontal axis first, then your vertical. I don't anymore. I doubt I'm really going to get that $ ball head. One con: big hands might not access the vertical axis knob as well as small hands. Also, not mentioned in the Pros column: pan heads such as this are traditionally PERFECT for architectural when you would set your horizon to level first. Also, order the Architectural camera plate because it doesn't swivel on you when you set the camera in a vertical aspect.

... it doesn't meet my expectation. For beginners this head is probably fine, but if you want better control, I suggest stick with the old fashioned 3-way pan head or get a ball head. This head does not even have a safety lock when positioning the camera vertically or tilting forward/back. You may seriously damage the camera or your lense if you forget to tighten the knobs then just let go of the camera. The knobs are not smooth to operate.

Bottom line, I ended up returning the 460MG and replaced with the much much better Manfrotto 410 Geared-head (well worth the price and I am very very happy)

Comments about Manfrotto 460MG 3D Magnesium Head with RC2 Quick Release - Supports 6.6 lbs (3kg):

Using 460mMG on 479 tripod instead of more usual 234RC head. Gives much more flexibility with adjustments in 3 axes instead just front to back tilt, at a cost of only about 200 more grams.

Comments about Manfrotto 460MG 3D Magnesium Head with RC2 Quick Release - Supports 6.6 lbs (3kg):

This is an upgrade from a Bogen 3D Junior head and mounted it to a new Monfrotto 290 Extra Tripod. Great addition to my kit! It is lighter, the ruberized-rounded knobs are much more compact with the head and it has the QR plate w/safety lock. The adjustments are a bit sticky but it is new and should smooth out with use and the pan is very smooth. My only question is since this is designed to be positioned in virtually any position, why is the level on the top plate and why is it a circular level? I do prefer starting with a level tripod and that would serve if mounted to the base but is useless when the head is used as intended. Otherwise it is a great product and should last as long as the tripod.

Comments about Manfrotto 460MG 3D Magnesium Head with RC2 Quick Release - Supports 6.6 lbs (3kg):

Just purchased a new tripod and was going to mount my 3D Junior head on it but though a new head wou,d go well with that so purchased this. The things it has going for it is much lighter (Magnesium?), much smoother overall design and the knobs as well so less likely to hang up on retrieval from my vehicle and it has the RC2 QR with the safety lock which will be important as will be mounting my camera backwards due to doing more overhead and the -30 degrees is usually all I do when tripod mounted. Thereason I gave it 4 stars is why did they not place the bubble level on the base? I like working on a level tripod and then moving the head where I want it to be. Any movement at all and the bubble level is useless mounted on the QR. The tapered design of the adjustements are a bit jerky and hopefully smooth out in time or will polish them up a bit and regrease them. All said and done though it seems solid and want my camera locked down when shooting stills, especially long nightime photos which will be coming up soon with the lunar eclipse due the 28th of September.

I like extreme low-angle shots when appropriate and am getting too old to crawl around getting the fram -- this head on a monopod and the camera can be inverted completely to shoot at ground level.

I do mostly photos but I began to make some movies. Using a standard ball head for this purpose gave me poor results. I need a head where I can move the camera on one axe only. This head permits this. I do not want standard handles and want to save space. This head provide this.

Comments about Manfrotto 460MG 3D Magnesium Head with RC2 Quick Release - Supports 6.6 lbs (3kg):

I was so thrilled to see this lightweight replacement for my wonderful-but-heavy geared head. I still have control of all three axes separately, which I find indispensible for my work, especially macro shots. Once you're used to being able to tweak each dimension, a ball head with it's propensity to move in all directions at once is not an option (believe me I've tried!). So even though this doesn't have screw-thread adjustment, a small learning curve was all that was needed to attain the same functionality.

I use this lightweight head for hiking into remote locations to get long exposure shots. I chose this head for its close knit knobs that don't protrude while it's attached to my tripod and backpack. I'm not a ballhead fan, so this reasonably priced head fit the bill. It's used with a D7000 w/grip, so quite a bit of weight with no problems of sagging in portrait or downward position. The panning is nice and smooth and the dual lock keeps you from accidentally unlocking the plate assy. B & H is the place for quality products and customer service !!

I've never been a ball-head kind of shooter due to the kind of work I do and so when I bought this unit to go with my new Manfrotto 055CXPro3, I had high hopes based on extensive reviews and research.I have to say I haven't been disappointed. The compact arrangements of the knobs is just fantastic and the movement in pan is very smooth. This head is an exceptional unit for price and a fantastic unit overall. The feel is solid and substantial. I'm very happy.

I have Parkinsons so Photogaphy is not easy for me.
BUT with the 460MG magnesium head it puts the fun back in to photography for me.
There are just 3 nobs to work, they are small but very effective & w/no ball head I do not need to worry about trying to change one setting & having something else change on me.
I would recomend this item to anyone.

Comments about Manfrotto 460MG 3D Magnesium Head with RC2 Quick Release - Supports 6.6 lbs (3kg):

Three way vs ballhead is a personal preference of course. As three-ways go this has nice capability for its weight and nice compactness for its ability. Under most circumstances it adjusts smoothly and is steady. It can work with my Nikon D90 with 55-300mm at 300mm with hardly any droop.
It is not all smooth sailing. The azimuth ring seems to contract in sub-zero (Fahrenheit) weather, making it tight and balky to adjust there. In its normal configuration the altitude pivot is forward of the tripod socket. The good news is that helps decrease the imbalance of some front heavy telephotos. However, it limits upward altitude adjustment to about 30 degrees. If your subject is up in a tree you can solve this by reversing the quick-release plate, mounting the camera so that the pivot is in back of the tripod socket. Pointing the camera upwards should diminish the imbalance, but with the camera attached this way then if you point it at the horizon it is now extra front heavy until you un-reverse the plate.

This is a great head. Very stable. Very easy and smooth to use. Very compact. And the knobs are large enough I have no problems with adjustments.

... it doesn't meet my expectation.

I like this head for it's weight and streamlined profile. One has to be aware of ultimate camera positioning before attaching as camera body can obstruct full axis motion.
At first I felt the strength/weight of each axis control was a bit too weak but as I've continued to use the head I'm becoming more comfortable and efficient at adjusting.

                                  Great control for ultra-light head.
