I bought this product to use with a new Canon 100mm Macro lens and it has proved invaluable.
When I first used the new lens on a tripod without it, I was disappointed with the outcome due to my inexperience with the extremely narrow depth of field. At first I thought the problem was with the lens but when I used the sliding plate my shots were immediately needle sharp and I knew I had to come to terms with and learn a whole new world of photography. Without the sliding plate I think I would still be blaming the lens.
The plate is a little fiddly to attach to the camera but once in place performs admirably. The camera can be moved quickly to get correct framing and then the micro adjustment of the slider allows precise focus on the selected elements to realise the full potential of your set up.

Works well at magnifications around 1x and because it is so much easier to carry and deploy in the field I use it at those magnifications in preference to traditional focusing rails. For that reason alone it’s worth the money. At 2x it is usable but not without frustration. The problem is the guides move and the screw does not turn smoothly. As a result the image doesn’t stay exactly put. This would be serious problem if stacking software could not aligne images automatically; but fortunately it can, so although you won’t enjoy using this product at 2x, it is doable. At 3x+ the worm screw is not fine enough to focus precisely and the sloppy guides and screw will exceed your patience. Honestly, I expected something called a micrometric positioning device to be more accurate than an old Olympus or Minolta rail, but it isn’t really.

Comments about Manfrotto 454 Micrometric Positioning Sliding Plate - Supports 17.7 lbs (8kg):

This will be a great aid to my macro photography and seems well constructed. However, I had a problem with the instructions. They advise you to remove one of the screws and the rubber stopper from the slide bar. There was no rubber stopper. There were only 2 screws in a separate package. Since I am not mechanically inclined, I assumed some parts were missing. Luckily my husband was able help me out and we discovered that system is no longer used. It seems Manfrotto may have updated the plate so that once you put in the 1/4 in screw it can't just fall out unless you unscrew it. Manfrotto must have made it that way so the rubber stopper is not necessary anymore. Just wish the instructions were updated as well.

Comments about Manfrotto 454 Micrometric Positioning Sliding Plate - Supports 17.7 lbs (8kg):

This slide plate is worth every penny. It is solid and well made. It's metal and fits very easily on my tripod. I started using this and found the number of pictures I have to shoot to get a good one is reduced well over 60%.You now can focus that 1/16th of on inch with no problem. Just turn a knob, which has a lock so you don't loss that focal point.

      Not what I thought

Comments about Manfrotto 454 Micrometric Positioning Sliding Plate - Supports 17.7 lbs (8kg):

I was disappointed. The plate would not mount on my Manfrotto ball head. To use it I had to remove the head from the tripod and then mount it. Therefore, I lost all of the functionality of the ball hard and had to move the plate or adjust the tripod legs many times to get a reasonable shot.

Comments about Manfrotto 454 Micrometric Positioning Sliding Plate - Supports 17.7 lbs (8kg):

When doing Macro work with 'stacking' you need a positioning plate that is accurate, easy to use and one appropriate for you pocket book and where you are in the work you do. This is a well made, piece of equiptment that I wouldn't call 'entry level' by any means. Just easy and great to work with.

Simple product that's easy to use. I purchased 2 of them so I can micro adjust from side to side as well as in and out. They work just like I was hoping. They are a little bulky, but that's definitely the nature of a micro positioning sliding plate.

Basic set up with fine and coarse adjustment in easy reach. Fine adjustment and stacking macro shots is a breeze with the long adjustment plate. Very stable camera bed, stays on my tripod pretty much permanently. For the price an excellent piece of equipment!

This product work well for Micro photography. I use it to focus stack several images into one.
I like the cost of this product the most.
I wish the turning knob would have been designed for 1 mm in movement of the slide as well as marked the knob as well as the frame to give you a full turn indicator.

This plate works well in combination with a geared head. You may attach it directly to a camera body or mount a tripod head. It's worth mentioning that the plate comes with both 3/8ths and 1/4-20 screws, both are removable but only the 3/8ths screw can be stored directly on the plate, so if you mean to use the plate with a tripod head combination you will have to find another place for the 1/4-20 screw. The rubber stopper keeping the screws in the rail is solid but has no means of staying attached to the plate and can potentially be misplaced. Another bit of nit picking, to avoid play in the mechanics everything locks down via one screw on the side, unlike traditional geared heads that provide controlled movement at all times, this micro positioning plate cannot when it's tension/lock screw in place. That aside, fine adjustments are smooth and camera placement may be adjusted on the plate for further control. Over all it feels solid and moves well, even with a medium format body on top. I was expecting less for the price and have been pleasantly surprised.

The price was right and since it's not something I will break out too often it fell right into my range. The build feels strong and sturdy and I'm sure I will be using it for years.

I use this for taking macro shots with a MPE-65 that I will focus stack.

This unit allows very fine control when changing the focus by adjusting the rail.

I gave it four stars because there is excessive play when trying to focus in and out. In use I simply overshoot the starting point and adjust the unit in one direction only.

If you want to focus stack your macro shots this will do the trick.

For small product photography (think diamond rings and such), focus stacking rocks. And is barely possible without something like this. Highly recommend.

Just what I needed for Canon 65mm macro. Nice fine adjustments, solid build 0 east to use. Put two together and move the camera in and out and side to side. Great for stacking

I use this for focus stacking macro images. I have not experienced any of the slop of movement that was referenced in a couple reviews. As is the case with most of the Manfrotto gear this is well made.

Just purchased a used Canon MP-E 65mm 1-5 macro lens and had read that a macro-focusing rail system would be indispensible with this unique lens. Read all the reviews and decided to buy the Manfrotto system. Have used it a lot for a couple of weeks and find that it is solid, well-built, easy to use, and very stable. Just got into focus-stacking and can't imagine doing without the Manfrotto! So far am satisfied with using it for forward-back movements, may (eventually) get another one for left-to right movements in addition.
Do not know why some reviews refer to instability - have not seen any.
