I use Blad cameras but I need a camera I can take with me on vacation that I wont have anxiety about, so I got the Sony a77 "even if your a full sensor guy, the a77 is just flat out fun" So I need a lens and I already have my 2k plus glass. So for a portrait lens I got the Sigma 50 f1.4 I only use it at 3.5 or lower and there is nothing under $1,500 that can touch it. Understand you will need to go manual focus on this baby and you will need to concentrate, its not a beginner lens at leaset I dont think so.

I pay no attention to the reviews saying they got a lemon, life is odds and if you get a lemon send it back and get another one. Seems to me you have a 1-20 chance or so.

To test your lens: Set up a row of 5 AA batteries at a 45dg angle and do a simple ff and bf test, focus on the middle battery. Then if the 2 in front and 2 in back are in good and even bokeh you got a winner.

To me its simple the bigger the opening the more light the better and at 77mm this thing looks as good as it shoots. My wife actually will use the reflection on the filter to pose herself as I shoot, thats how big it is.

I really liked the results of this lens... when it would focus properly. I spent countless hours over the past few weeks trying to get it to focus properly with micro adjustments on my A77. No matter what I did I could not hone in on the "sweet spot". I would say about 50% of the time it was dead on but the other 50% the images were not even usable. As this was used as my primary portrait lens it was extremely frustrating as the expressions would be great on my subjects face but their eyes would so blurry they were unusable.

For now I am just going to stick with my Tamron 60mm Macro until I can afford the Zeiss 50mm lens. The Sigma was really sharp but the inconsistent AF focus was really bad. Unfortunately the Sony 50mm 1.4 was to soft for me and I was hoping the Sigma would be the answer. Perhaps I got a "bad" copy as people say but I don't want to chance my shots to a lens that has so many "bad" copies out there. How man would I have to purchase before I got a "good" copy?

This was my first Sigman lens and unless I hear otherwise I am going to steer clear of any lenses they make. Tamron has a much better track record and their have a better build quality on their lenses as well. Ideally I would like to own all the Ziess and Sony G lenses but that is just not realistic. So I have relied on Tamron to help fit my budget. I will soon by purchasing the Tokina 11-16mm as I have heard good things about it.

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Sony Alpha:

While I bought this product because I needed a quality prime to do portraits, it has become my daily lens of choice. I don't even carry my kit lens anymore (18-55mm) unless I know I'll need the flexibility, like when taking photos in narrow Italian streets. Even then, the 500mm prime produces some shots I'm not sure I'd think of on my own. The focus is superb, and the blurred backgrounds shooting at 1.4 really make the subject stand out. Awesome in low light such as kids parties.

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Sony Alpha:

First thing i did was look at the focusing . I used a tripod,A99, 6 inch scale marked off in 64th of a inch . I took a picture of it pointed at the 3 inch mark ,using spot focus@f1.4 . the scale was laying on the table. I turn focus ring to minmum and focus i did the same thing by turning to infinity focus mark .I did this a 10 times each way . All were focused in the same place .All the picture's came out the same. On my camera focus works well, even in low light .It dose not hunt for focus . it snaps to focus . I notice CA at f1.4 . i new this before i ordered it .

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Sony Alpha:

I have only been into photography for about 6 months and I started with a 2008 Sony Alpha a300 and two lenses, the 18-70mm kit lens and the beer can sigma 70-300mm (paid $[*] for the lot used). After a chat with a pro photographer friend of mine, I decided that I needed to marry the lens, and date the body. My body is working just fine, so I hocked the two lenses (for $[*] - so I made profit!)and bought this AMAZING 50mm f/1.4.On the crop sensor a300, this is a perfect lens for beginners. It is fantastic and sharp wide open, and with such a fast lens, a very quick shutter speed! I did a lot research on this lens and ultimately chose it over the Sony with the same specs. The AF is very quick and accurate and so quiet I could hear a pin drop while trying to focus this camera! The case that this lens comes in is very sturdy and safe. Obviously, it is a great lens for portraits, but if you are far enough away, you can get a nice landscape shot too! I recommend getting it as a beginner instead of a ultra-zoom and use your feet to zoom instead! Also the price did not vary by any site, so this was my first B&H purchase and I'm really pumped about my rewards card!Cannot recommend this lens enough, and buying the B&H! Cheers, hope this helps!

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Sony Alpha:

This is one heck of a prime lens...

Lets just jump right into it for you (meaning myself) photography nerds. What makes photography fun? BOKEH!!! This 50mm prime lens is a great nifty fifty to own in your bag. An F stop of 1.4, built in auto-focus motor (very quiet), lets in TONS of light wide open, and the durability/build on this thing is like that of the ancient Pyramids, this lens might possibly survive the apocalypse. Just kidding... Because there is no weather proofing.

Bokeh (Japanese for blur) is what makes a specific subject stand out from the background & or foreground, via depth of field. This lens' Bokeh is as creamy a milk right from a cow. Perfectly handled photos can and will produce some of the best bokeh a 50mm can produce. Better than Canon's, Nikon's & Sony's f1.4's. There's been test done, I am not making this up. Blurred images do not have that hexagon/onion like bokeh that worse lens' produce, perfect every time, that is with perfect focus and NO MOVEMENT. F1.4 is pretty heavy as far as F stops go, so you will be letting in a lot of light... Little movement while pressing the shutter button can cause unwanted blurs. I would recommend a tri-pod if you have been drinking caffeine all day.

What don't I like you ask?

Hmm... This thing is heavier than any 50mm on the market I believe. Holding it around your neck with a strap can be pretty annoying, but you will have the best neck muscles out of all of your friends.

Auto-focusing at low light is a pain. I tend to just "click" it over to manual focus with low light. The button to switch between Auto and Manual is a big clicky noise, kind of cheesy.

No weather sealing. If you are one of the "storm chasing" photographers, you might want to get a lens with weather sealing. Point said.

All in all, does this lens take great pictures? YES. Is it heavy? YES.

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Sony Alpha:

A great normal lens for my A 850 camera. Better resolution & color than my old Minolta 50mm f1.4 lens (25 yrs old). Compares favorably with the Sigma 30mm f1.4 I use on my APS-C camera.
Very sharp at f 2.8 and higher w/o distortion.
For landscapes, flowers & floral designs w/o flash, this lens can't be beat for the price.
Large and heavy for a standard 50mm lens but matches well on the full frame a 850 camera.
This lens will stay on my camera unless there is a pressing need for a wide angle shot.
                  I'm happy with this purchase

I don't normally write reviews but this lens was worth talking about. It's a little soft at 1.4 but if you stop down to 2.0 or 2.8 it's very sharp. It may not be as sharp as Ziess but it's wayyyyy cheaper. The AF is fast and accurate (I guess I lucked out with quality control issues). I have no complaints. Just one suggestion, if you do get a lens that's f1.4 be very careful with the focus. It's very shallow and the slightest movement can throw the focus off. It's a great lens. Anyone who gets it will be very happy with it.

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Sony Alpha:

On my A900, the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 is usable at f/1.4 in the center of the frame. The edge of the frame is still a little bit too soft at f/1.4. f/2 is very usable across the frame. I won't get the same performance from my Sony/Minolta 50mm f/1.4 until f/2.8. Beside the large size, one problem I find with the Sigma lens is focus would shift. While my copy of the lens need no micro-adjustment for anything from ~1.5m to infinite. It starts front focus at closer distance. Worst case is at MFD, and I may need +8 adjustment.

Fantastic lens, it is tack sharp. Everyone says that about their lenses, but this is my sharpest. @ f8 it is amazing, @ f1.4 if is very sharp and if remember your DOF. It is built like a tank.

Excellent Prime Lenses From Sigma. I use this Lenses with My Sony Nex-7 with Sony LA -EA-2 mount Adapter. Nice Bokeh at 1.4 aperture, very sharp Glass. . Good Price for a prime Lense 1.4 . The Autofocus works great , fast, and sharp focus. For Video in manual mode is outstanding. The Lenses is Big for the Nex-7 body but when the camera is on a Tripod is perfect. I like the performance of this lenses with the Sony Nex-7

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Sony Alpha:

The body of the lens is pretty solid. It is the largest 50mm within the competition, with the largest filter diameter of 77mm. Center sharpness is incredible right from 1.4 and you reach tack sharpness at f/2.0. Corner sharpness, however, is not a very strong point for Sigma 50mm f/1.4. You have to stop down to f/5.6 for the peak performance across the image but still, corners are slighly soft when compared to the competition. Bokeh is creamy and very very smooth. HSM works pretty silent and quick. The IQ of this lens is very very good. It's a catch for this price. The lens does not have weather sealing, therefore it loses 1 star.

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Sony Alpha:

Sigma may not be very well known for great glass, but the secret is yet to be told. This is a fabulous lens which takes great photos, and has a the most buttery bokeh I have used. Indoors in low light it really shines and that 77mm piece of glass allows a vast amount of light into your camera. I was skeptical initially, but after using it for about a week I have a completely different opinion about Sigma. They are leaps and bounds over the competition with this 50mm f1.4 dream lens that is very reasonably priced.

Big, heavy, awesome. As with most, all the open it can be a little soft. However, the clarity at 2.8+ is ridiculous. I tend to spot focus on eyes. It is one thing to pick up some reflection, it is quite another to see your reflexion as if you are looking at a polished 8 ball. Would definitely recommend.

I bought this lens for video.

Specifically, low light and DOF on my Sony A57

As a lens it does not dissapoint.

It takes very nice footage. And I like the beefyness of the construction which makes it feel more pro and legit than say the canon 1.8
