Domke bags have come a long way, and the F3 backpack is a good example how they evolved while still keeping their legendary design features. The canvas hugs your body and is non-abrasive, and the backpack design allows hands-free operation. The bag is quite roomy and the upper compartment can accomodate a whole close up light set such as the R1-C1. This clever design allows the user to seperate photo gear from other auxillary items such as filters and flashes. The bag is deep enough for most lenses (up to 80-200mm f2.8D but not the 70-200mm f2.8G standing up) For the latter you can put it sideway, but if you do so you will void the usage of the inner pocket.

I was encouraged to see Domke offer this pack but disappointed by its limitations. The fixed lens compartments prevent the use of Domke inserts, which would otherwise make this a versatile bag. The top compartment is too small to be useful for anything other than a few small accessories or a small lunch. If you have only a few lenses and a single SLR body this bag would work well, but if you are looking for the flexibility found in other Domke bags, this is not the bag you're looking for.

    Comments about F-3 Backpack (Sand):

I first got the F3X shoulder bag. It's great for a small kit but if you have to carry it for any length of time it can cause back strain because all the weight goes on one shoulder.I then got the F2 backpack which is very big. It is a great bag that can take your camera gear and anything else the kids want for the hike. Don't full it up entirely with glass as it will probably break like your back. Finally I got the smaller F3 backpack. It's perfect. My youngest always wants to be picked up so this bag is great because it's so easy on the back. Also it's great for longer walks. It can't take the big lenses like the F2 backpack but it will take my Nikkor 180mm f/2.8D and other smaller primes. It would have been nice if the two main compartments could be converted to one (like they can with the F2) but it's not a major. The first thing I did was to remove the waist belt and chest support strap. Totally unnecessary in my opinion and they just get in the way. Not sure why this is listed as discontinued. It's my favourite and most used bag at the moment.

This is my second Domke bag and I love it. I keep my cameras in there whether at home or on the go. The bags are VERY well made with heavy duty canvas, well stitched and the cameras are protected.

I'm phasing out all of my other bags and will switch to Domke exclusively. I love the quality and I love the fact that they're made in the USA!

      Comments about F-3 Backpack (Black):

I bought this bag because it wasn't an obvious camera bag and I wanted something I can bring around everyday that could also hold my personal things. The quality of the canvas is really good and I love the amount of pockets it comes with. I do wish the pocket underneath the flap was zippered, because if the bag were to tip over, things would easily slide out. When it arrived in the mail, I wasn't expecting it to be huge. I am a small frame female and only 5'2, and this bag looks huge on me but that's not much of a problem. There are 2 compartments for your camera, one on the top which has no padding and then one on the bottom with padding. I used to place my camera on the bottom compartment, but it took a while to remove my camera especially when I needed it right away. So I just use that bottom part to store my lens and use the top compartment for my camera. Overall, my gear feels pretty safe to store in this bag if I'm just going around town or doing light travels. I wouldn't bring it on a hike though. I haven't tested how this bag is in the rain and I wouldn't risk it either. If you want to travel as a light weight then I would recommend this bag. But if you're going to do anything rugged that could possibly damage your gear, then get a more heavy duty bag with more padding. Also. I bought this bag on sale for $99.99, but I would not purchase this bag with its original price of $[$]. That's really expensive, when you could buy another bag with more protection for less.

I couldn't wait to get my f-3 backpack.I was surprised to see how big it was in person. The picture makes it look smaller than it really is. But all is well. The extra pocket above the camera pouch makes it that way. But no big deal because now I have an extra pocket for anything. I can even fit my tripod in one of the pockets. Overall 5 star!

          Comments about F-3 Backpack (Black):

I can't have too many photo bags, it seems. I have 5 or 6, and I just purchased this Domke to add to the collection. I like it because it fits my probody DSLR plus a couple of lenses easily, and its somewhat plain exterior doesn't scream camera bag. When I need a fuller kit I'll use a different bag, but for more casual stuff (which I can now do more often with this bag!) and for wandering around town, this is now my go-to bag. If the side pockets were zippered, I'd be extra happy, but it's still a pretty good setup. (I think I can get rid of a couple of my older bags too!) Another thing that led to my purchase it is that it's not made in China. That was an important factor in choosing this brand.

            Comments about F-3 Backpack (Black):

This is a great size bag for moderate walking around sites. Build quality is great and provides a great platform to build your system around. Like most Domke products it is not padded but gives you ample room to add inserts if you feel the need. It can hold a ton of gear including a 70-200vr easily and you can overload it quite quickly. I can easily get 2 bodies, 4 lenses, flash and still have not touched the top compartment. Only thing I would change is a simple removable belt strap to keep is from swinging when riding a bike and a bottom board for protection.

I have other bags for long hikes but for a day bag this is great. Many times I carry a body with 4 primes and this all fits in the top compartment leaving the bottom for gift shop stuff, lunch, etc. Other bags with dividers just can't do this.
