As a landscape/nature photographer I am attracted more by the depth of field expansion (vertical tilt) than the corection of coverging lines (vertical shift). without any correction this lens has an outstanding sharpness rivalling with the very best lenses from Zeiss or Leica.
I am discovering the possibilities of these multiple combinations and I feel that it will take me a few weeks/months to master them all. I am using many MF lenses already so the Manual focus operation is not a throw back for me. I feel already that I will achieve exceptional photos using these new possibilities (panoramas, change plane of focus horizontally and vertically etc...).

The ultimate toy/tool for the creative photographer.

I have used this lens primarily for copy/archiving artwork. The tilt and shift function on the lens, along with its 'normal' focal length make this absolutely ideal for this type of work. I will not go on and on about the well documented aspects of this lens' sharpness build quality etc. What other people have said is true in my experience.

What disappointed me hugely with this lens is IMHO a design oversight. if you're reading this Nikon, please fix this!

When the lens is pointed downward, as I often do in repro, the front of the lens actually sag, and creep slowly with focus. This is because the lens is not Internal focus by design, and the front of the lens is too heavy. This is not dissimilar to zoom creep on cheap high zoom ratio lenses, except it does it with focus. This makes it impossible to use on a tripod unless you want to employ some duct tape!

Worthy of noting also is that the PC-E 24mm and the 85mm lenses do NOT suffer from the same problem, this is unique to the 45mm. This is absolutely unacceptable when the price of this lens is taken into account.

I have also tested out the Canon's comparable TS-E 45mm, while these is not creeping, the optical quality is nowhere near the Nikkor due to the age of the Canon, so I'm forced to use other focal length at this stage. Canon users should also note that this is technically an "E" type Nikkor, meaning if you have a nikon lens to Canon body adaptor, there is no Aperture pin on the mount to stop down as of 24 Nov 2015!

Overall if you don't shoot downward, this is a great lens, otherwise, better off consider the 24 or the 85!

    Comments about Nikon PC-E Micro-NIKKOR 45mm f/2.8D ED Tilt-Shift Lens:

This is a truly exceptional lens in terms of sharpness, contrast, and color fidelity both in the center and at the corners. On a D800e, it is tack sharp at the single pixel level. If Nikon goes to a 50MP FF sensor, I believe this lens will handle the increased resolution of the smaller pixel. The lens is solidly built and focus is silky smooth. I give it a solid 5 stars.

I have attached two 100% crops of a low contrast subject taken under soft lighting (cirrus cloud overcast). This choice reduces the perceived sharpness resulting from shadows caused by strong directional light. The images show the center of a D800e jpg with the tilt set to about the middle of its range. The aperture was stopped to F/10, which is into the realm where resolution is limited by diffraction rather than the D800e pixel pitch. In the fist crop, no sharpening has been applied. The second shows the same image with mild sharpening.

I use primarily tilt movements. From the factory, tilt and shift directions are set to perpendicular. A *very* minor annoyance for me is the extremely rare occasion when I wish I had parallel tilt and shift available on the lens itself. But if I need parallel tilt and shift, I simply apply the shift effect in software after acquiring the image with enough border around the subject to allow for the distortion correction. In practical use, the fixed perpendicular tilt and shift axes are of no consequence for my work.

      Comments about Nikon PC-E Micro-NIKKOR 45mm f/2.8D ED Tilt-Shift Lens:

If you are a present or former View Camera photographer, you will not be even close to what you are accustomed to. Most importantly, you can not swing and tilt in the same photo.

Secondly, you can not do tilt and rise/fall in the same photo. Nikon's owner's manual does say that you can send the lens to them, at additional cost, and they will re-configure this lens so that rise/fall and tilt can be done in the same photo.

This lens is designed for the 35mm photographer who has always wished to dabble in the View Camera world. He will have no idea what he is missing.

        Comments about Nikon PC-E Micro-NIKKOR 45mm f/2.8D ED Tilt-Shift Lens:

I finally purchased this lense after delaying for several years. I made the purchase because I wanted to control vertical perspective on building/architecture photographs. Needless to say it did that. In addition I have been using it for photographing mechanical/machines gizmos such as the drive wheels on steam locomotives. I am very pleased with the lense; and, it is rapidly becoming a go to lense.

This is just an amazing lens. Being a micro as well as a TS lens, it does much more than you would think. I also have the 24 PC-E, which is great for interiors, but a bit wide outside for me. The 45 really fills a gap in my bag.

Have been using this lens for landscapes since I got it, but intend to make some portraits with it soon. Very sharp, very versatile, very bright and easy to focus.

Would be great if I could tilt/shift in both directions at the same time, like the Zeiss lens for Nikon, but this lens was much less expensive and also stops down automatically, making it a usable hand-held portrait lens.

                Comments about Nikon PC-E Micro-NIKKOR 45mm f/2.8D ED Tilt-Shift Lens:

It is easy to use if you have experience with a view camera. There is a slight exposure shift when the lens is heavily tilted, but I would not consider this a problem when shooting digital. And yes, it will mount on the D800, unlike some reviews on the web suggest. The shift is more than generous but expect some chromatic aberrations at the far end. The tilt is even too generous for landscape photography. Here lies my only criticism: The swing mechanism should have a lower gear to allow more precise movement. Of course it would be nicer if the lens had the tilt and shift on independent planes, but in landscape photography I use the shift merely for stitching (arriving at my beloved 4x5 aspect ratio).

The lens is very sharp and outperforms all my other Nikon lenses at this focal length. Focuses down to a 1:2 ratio, which I would not call macro/micro, but is very good for tight head portraits and product shots.

Got the lens and quickly realized that it is an A+ lens for professionals. Just don't have the time that this lens needs to get the most out of it. Perhaps, I'm spoiled by how automatic equipment is today. Definitely recommend it, but only for those who have the time and patience -- thus I returned it.

I love this lens. Use it for closeup work with flowers and insects as well as for photographing structures, inside and out. It's a best-of-both worlds lens for me, and spends more time on my D700 than any other lens nowadays. I found it easy to quickly readjust to manual focussing, and am always already inclined to shift metering according to my tastes anyway, so there's no issue for me there. Lots of options with this lens, worth every penny.

I use this lens every day and I love it. The ability to treat my 35mm more like a 4x5 has become a valuable tool in my photography.

I always wanted this lens but needed a macro lens too. Decided to skip buying a macro and get this. Does a great job at both macro and tilt shift. Love it.

I waited a long time to purchase this lens and it was worth the wait! I takes a bit of getting used to but it produces results every time. You can easily focus (or not) on the subject. It moves left to right, up and down and also moves 90 degrees so the angles are endless. It is a bit heavy and needs two hands but if you take the extra time out to frame the shot, it's great. It's also all manual but I find that if i take a test photo with the lens zero'd and then move the lens, the aperture/shutter settings remain the same. Maybe a little tweaking but with digital camera's it's not that big of deal to get it right in the lens.

Actually took me a bit by surprise how sharp this lens is. Even though it obviously won't be a lens I use 100% of the time, I think it is defn worth the investment.

                              Comments about Nikon PC-E Micro-NIKKOR 45mm f/2.8D ED Tilt-Shift Lens:

I was a little skeptical at first, needless to say I was about to spend some good money on an 'imported' lens. Straight from Japan, this heavy duty bad boy does a great job of making magic. In a world where everything is being automated to oblivion, I find this lens a true artist tool to go beyond the framing composition and camera settings. This lens adds a new dimension to my photography, manual manual manual! I love it.

Yes you could try to make similar effects or results on photoshop, or other image editing software, but the truth of the matter is you will not have the same angle resolution, depth, as you would with this lens. There is also the accidental surprise, which to me has gotten lost in the digital era. I have found different focus points within the same focus plain amongst a leafy landscape that creates such a depth and interesting image. Not having to sacrifice aperture means nice bokeh with an added bonus, manual control!

Coupled with a video capable SLR... well, that's just where our mind explodes and you can create amazing clips, or add a new feel to a video composition.

One of my favorite ways to use it is to compose panoramic landscapes, besides increasing the pixel resolution for my prints, it gives me the right perspective of view, and the best compositional element; I get to choose the plain of focus. It's just another dimension.

I am extremely happy with this lens, made a right decision, don't be afraid.

OK, so it doesn't afford all of the movements us old view camera users are accustomed to, but for the convenience of the small camera, this is the next best thing. The lens is sharp corner to corner and even surpasses my old 85 tilt shift Nikkor lens.
