4 stars instead of 5, because it is not the ultimate wide-angle lens. The Nikon was better, from what I remember (on my Nikon D5000, but much more expensive). This lens has a good zoom range and a great aperture range, but it does not do f2.8, and it is slightly soft at f3.5. I shoot with a Sony A55, and they work great together. This lens cost [$]at the time I am writing this, and for that much money, I don't know if it can be beat. I'd like to try the Sigma 10-20mm to see how it compares, because it is about the same cost. This Tamron lens is a little heavy, but lighter than the Sigma 10-20mm and much lighter than the Sigma 12-24mm full-frame lens, which I used with my Canon 5 D (of course, because that is a full-frame lens), but this lens is MUCH heavier than my Sony 18-55mm kit lens. I have no experience with the Sigma 10-20mm, which is supposed to be very good and about the same price as this lens. I am considering returning this lens for the Sigma 8-16mm to get the wider view, but the ultra-wide Sigma costs more, and I like being able to zoom to 24mm. The zoom range and wide maximum aperture range makes this Tamron a really good all-around wide lens on my Sony A55, with its APS-C size sensor, so I don't find myself removing the Tamron 10-24mm to get a little narrower view as much as I used to remove the Sigma 12-24mm from my full-frame Canon. I think this Tamron would be a great lens to have on a camera while traveling, especially if you use an APS-C cmaera with one of the really good full-frame lenses: 24-70mm f2.8, 24-120mm f4 VR (Nikon shooters) or Canon 24-105mm f4 L IS (Canon shooters). This lens would be a perfect budget-price companion for one of those lenses (though I think the more expensive Nikon 10-24mm might be better for Nikon shooters who use an APS-C sensor camera, like a D5100 or D7000). I think this lens is excellent value, with a quality feel, good auto-focus, and the ability to put filters on it. It does not seem to vignette, which is something I really like about this lens. My Sigma 12-24 (the expensive, full-frame EX lens) vignetted a lot on my 5 D, which I thought was pretty normal for budget-priced, super-wide lenses, but obviously not...............

I've been using this on my a77 for about a year now. The focal length is very useful and I've taken some great shots with this lens. My favorite use is to get right up into the face of my subject and still capture lots of background. I also like to set it on a tripod and get long-exposure night shots with it. The wide angle means you see less streaking in star photos. It's a durable lens that's held up to some considerable abuse, and it's not that heavy.

I am a little disappointed with the softness of this lens however. Also, distortion from 10 to about 14mm is pretty substantial, lessening towards the center of the frame. What this means is, you have to position faces towards the center, or just zoom in a little bit, otherwise your subjects will look unnatural. Flaring is also substantial, especially with the sun at the edge of the frame.

While you'd expect some flaring and distortion from an ultra-wide, the softness is what bugs me the most about this lens. It's acceptable, but not outstanding, and I suppose it's about right for the lens' price point. Also on the minus side is the noisy and somewhat slow focusing, as well as the massive lens hood which causes some difficulty in packing.

It's been a good purchase, and I'm passing it on to my wife for use with her a65 whilst I upgrade to the full-frame a99, and look at the doubly-priced Sigma 12-24, hoping it will improve on the sharpness (although in my dreams Sony releases a Zeiss lens for full frame with the same focal length).

Comments about Tamron SP AF 10-24mm f / 3.5-4.5 DI II Zoom Lens For Sony DSLR Cameras:

I have been using this lens to photograph landscapes and large outdoor fundraising events. It has excellent depth of field and angle of coverage that enabled me to get in close with a wide view. On an APS-C sensor it is the equivalent of a 15-36mm lens on a 35mm camera. I did not notice any significant issue with focusing under the bright daylight conditions in which I have used it. I have yet to use it in dim light or at night, though in the latter case I would focus manually anyway. The lens shade is very large but necessitated by the wide angle of view. In daylight the shade is mandatory. While the lens is made of plastic, it feels very solid and rugged, not flimsy or cheap. The only thing I would improve on is the maximum f/ stop, which I would like to see be constant at 3.5, and preferably 2.8 or larger for low light situations.

I'm just beginning to explore the uses of this wide angle lens from Tamron and so far I really like what I am seeing. The picture quality is excellent. I have never been disappointed with any Tamron lens that I have purchased. I look forward to finding more situations and locations to use my new lens.

I'm not a pro but enjoy photography. I live in an area with big mountain views so this lens is perfect for taking mountain range and landscaping photos. I also use it for taking photo's inside rooms of the houses I build. Great for that too.

As an architect, I frequently shoot building interiors and exteriors in very confined conditions. This lens is excellent for my uses and has surprisingly modest distortion for such a wide lens. For the price this is about as good as it gets.

I bought this wide-angle with the idea of using it for landscapes and architecture (more specifically, I plan to mount it on the camera that I'm having converted to infrared). Maybe I'll also use it to shoot crowd scenes at events. So far, in the two days of snapshooting that I've done with it (on the Sony a77), it's been everything that I wanted it to be: the focus is fast, the images are crisp, and the wide-angle perspective is an epiphany. This is the lens I've always wanted--without knowing about it. I only gave it four stars 'cos I'm sure there are other, greater lenses in the B&H catalog that I haven't come across yet.

Comments about Tamron SP AF 10-24mm f / 3.5-4.5 DI II Zoom Lens For Sony DSLR Cameras:

I bought this lens in preparation for a trip abroad where I expect to shoot many landscapes and much architecture. This lens is remarkably wide for a digital camera and lacks any of the distortion of a true fisheye. The walls of buildings appear straight, not slanting as they will with less wide-angle lenses. This lens is perfect for my needs. I have been trying it out around the neighborhood with good results. The photos are sharp throughout the zoom range. In addition, the lens is not excessively heavy. I am quite pleased with it.

i felt greatly limited by regular lens with a focal minimum of 17mm

this almost doubles the size of the width.

great lens and it is what i expected but needed.

I do a lot of realty photos...and need a good wide lens....with decent speed too...even though I do shoot with auxilliary flash..and wanted a wide lens for my new Sony SLT A33...
Some so called experts rated this lens poor for soft pictures..but just going to f8 or so gives a great boost to picture sharpness...overall very pleased with color and usefullness...great wide range from 10 to 24mm...which most other wide lens cannot match...for price and performance...some said lens is heavy---it is NOT heavy----my Tokina 12-24 f4...is heavy---(Nikon)

It is very useful to get all familymembers in one photo in natural way, they do not need to gather close each other.
It does not need so much light.
Perhaps there are lenses that are smaller and not so heavy, but I think it is very robust.

For documenting gallery installations in sometimes tight quarters, this lens is amazing. I find myself gravitating towards the widest end on this ultra-wide, so the extra 1-2mm over the other lens options is wonderful.

35mm lens on 35mm camera is what I first learned on, so having 36mm equivalent on the long end makes this a perfect lens in my mind. Yes, you won't be getting the shallow depth of field of a longer focal length prime, but that's usually not what one is going for with an ultra wide, anyway.

Using this lens with live-view on an Alpha 55 takes away the disorienting feeling of the ultra-wide edge distortion when using an optical viewfinder. I'm not sure exactly why this is, but I suspect it has to do with the image not filling up my full field of view, as the viewfinder does (e.g. my brain is able to integrate movement in actual space around the camera LCD).
