I love my Profoto B1 strobes, so I might as well come to terms with the exorbitant cost of Profoto accessories.

I already own the TTL-C Air Remote, but had to purchase the standard Air Remote anyway. One of my primary applications is architectural photography. It requires a large number of flash heads, making it necessary for me to use mixed brands of flash and radio triggers.

Profoto marketing materials do not show a picture of the hot shoe on this remote, but it is a simple, single pin contact compatible with virtually any standard hot shoe like the ones present on my Canon cameras for almost 50 years.

As clearly stated on the B&H website, Profoto is not compatible with PocketWizards. What that means is the radio triggering signal of a PocketWizard cannot be used to trigger Profoto Air Remote.

However, if you mount a PocketWizard Plus III on the camera transmitting to another PocketWizard Plus III, the Profoto Air Remote Transceiver will work fine if attached to the receiving PocketWizard Plus III via the PocketWizard - HSFM3 Flash Sync Cable (3'), B&H# WIHSFM3, or even if mounted in the Impact FA-300HS Triple-Flash Hot Shoe Adapter Mount B&H # IMFA300HS, along with a PocketWizard Plus III (without cable) mounted in one of the other hot shoes on the FA-300HS adapter.

In fact, the Impact Triple-Flash Hot Shoe Adapter is what I use to integrate Profoto Air Remote, PocketWizard, and Yongnuo strobe systems. Using PocketWizard Plus III as the primary link to the camera, the Impact Triple-Flash Adapter links the PocketWizard Plus III receiver simultaneously to the Profoto Air Remote and also to a Yongnuo YN560-TX. In this way, two different brands of radio triggered flashes can be used reliably in sync with a single PocketWizard Plus III mounted on my camera. It works great.

Why did I purchase the Profoto Air Remote when I already own the much more capable Profoto Air Remote TTL-C? Because the Air Remote TTL-C has a multipin hot shoe foot and it does not work in a standard, manual, single pin hot shoe. Apparently, the pins on extra pins for flash automation on the TTL-C short out and prevent triggering the Profoto strobes.

The Profoto Air Remote works great as advertised. The controls are simple, and it is not really necessary to read the manual. I downgraded the star rating because it stings to be forced to purchase such an expensive remote when I already own the even more expensive Air Remote TTL-C. Also, it hurts my feelings to see that the Yongnuo YN560-TX trigger has a design and build quality at least as good as the Profoto Air Remote, plus is much more capable, all at a cost of less than one sixth that of the Profoto. Still, the overall Profoto B1 system is awesome, among the best strobes on the market. I'm pleased with these products and have no regrets after waffling initially prior to buying into this lighting system.

I use this product when it is not convenient to change the power on my D1 manually. I love it's simplicity and it work great and flawlessly. If I had to say something negative, I would love a digital readout of the actual power level.

Hotshoe mount breaks, no way to see power settings at camera

Comments about Profoto Air Remote Transceiver:

Being able to change your settings at your camera is awesome, don't get me wrong. But for the price, and just being from Profoto I'd expect sturdier construction. It is manufactured with some play in the piece that inserts into the hotshoe but unfortunately it creates a structural weakness. Mine came loose and then broke off. I was able to fix it with plastic epoxy, but I don't think it should have come to that. Also, it would be fantastic to be able to see your power settings on the remote. As it is, the only way to tell what power the light is set to is to bump it all the way to the top or bottom and hear the light beep to tell you so.I clicked "no I wouldn't recommend" but really it depends. The TTL version is stronger and has a screen to display info but it's more expensive. I guess if you're getting Profoto you may as well spend another $100 and get the better remote even if your lights don't support TTL.

Comments about Profoto Air Remote Transceiver:

This remote is the perfect match for my D1's. At first you feel it light because it's plastic, but is reliable as everything Profoto does. I have two remotes because you never know an it's better to have a backup. Keep at hand an extra set of batteries because you'll need them if you use it day after day. One little detail that I love about this remote is that the letters and numbers glow in the dark.

Comments about Profoto Air Remote Transceiver:

I use this on my Sony cameras to fire and adjust the power on the Profoto B1 and B2 heads. Very useful, particularly when your head is difficult to reach. Seems secure in the Sony (newer style) hot shoe. Have used it on both an A99 and A7r with no difficulties. It comes with kind of a strange pouch - it is like a large cordura envelope. I would prefer a smaller and more padded case. If you are a solo photographer using this in the studio, consider buying two - one for the camera, and a second to carry in your hand and use it to trigger the lights for metering purposes. In the absence of TTL, the second unit is helpful for metering.

Comments about Profoto Air Remote Transceiver:

I used to hate these, but they come in quite handy. The build is not that good, but they work exactly as they should. The ability to shoot a higher shutter speed, I've done up to 1/1600 with a leaf shutter lens, is a huge plus.

Comments about Profoto Air Remote Transceiver:

Fact is that Profoto makes great stuff and my original Air Transceiver won't ever break, but I lost track of it last week. A few thousand watt-seconds of great light with no good way to trigger it. So after searching the house and studio and every camera bag three times I bought a new one.

And as most of you know, buying a new one MAKES the first one show up, and it worked.

But I do not regret having a 2nd one of these, pricey as it is. You can't be a photo pro and not have a backup plan.

        Now I do.

B&H recommended this. I used my lights with my Nikons and wanted to use them with my other cameras. Now I use it with my Profoto B1 lights and my Hasselblad H5D. An unexpected benefit is It also works with my Leica M 240. I couldn't be more pleased. It isn't TTL with the Hasselblad or Leica, but that hasn't been a problem

You don't have to walk back and forth to adjust power on your power pack. If your shooting without an assistant this is a must have when using strobes!

I have been using Pocket Wizard to trigger my Profoto D1 Airs. They work, but it sort of a pain to attach them to the D1s and you have to replace the AA batteries in each unit peridoically. I decided recently to just get the Profoto remote and reduce the clutter of having 4 Pocket Wizards. The Profoto trigger works great. It's smaller than the PW when it sits on my camera and there are no misfires. I like the fact that the test button is white. It's easy to see.

Comments about Profoto Air Remote Transceiver:

Overall this is a great system. Excellent features and control.

However, they wear out batteries quickly and the plastic hot shoe connection is pretty delicate.

Had to return first one as hot shoe was faulty.

works great with air lights, but construction feels so cheap... i also dropped mine and it stopped working... needs to have a rubberized case.

get the cheaper one as less costly when you drop it

not as reliable as pocket wizards, does not fire every time... but working with USB air remote and using laptop is a dream.

Good product but could be built sturdier

Used for professional advertising photography. This product has great range and saves a lot of time when adjusting the power settings of multiple lights especially when the lights are in different rooms. For the price, I would like to see them built sturdier and with a locking mechanism for the hot shoe mount. I had one slip off the camera's shoe mount and fall onto concrete from 4 feet in the air causing all the lights on the remote to stop working.
