We received our Epson Stylus Pro 7900 on Dec. 10. After a smooth (~3 hour) assembly process (the manual wisely recommends 4 people to lift it onto its stand!), we were happily printing photos and fine art on the 11th.
I say 'happily' because the 7900 is by far the best printing experience we've had in 20 years. Some of the reasons why:
--Although the nominal 1440x2880 resolution hasn't changed, the very small droplet size, barely visible at 10x magnification, coupled with a clever dithering pattern yield much improved perceived optical resolution. Grayscale gradients are utterly smooth and rich.
--Larger color gamut, thanks to orange and green, yields big perceptual improvements in landscapes, skin tones, etc.
--"Auto" black ink switching works quickly, well, and with little ink.
--Improved paper handling, both roll and sheet. The single sheet handling works very easily and accurately, even accepting deckle-edged paper, including 8.5x11. You simply insert a sheet visually aligned to a reference line until it meets resistance, press the down arrow which grabs the paper, confirm on the panel what type of media it is, and the printer then moves it into position. So far we've printed on Epson Premium Luster 260 and various fine art matte media including Arches Infinity, Moab Somerset, Bergger, Epson WC, and several Arches uncoated WC papers. Results in each case are the best we've ever seen from any printer.
--The redesigned printer driver has to be relearned, but it installs ICC profiles for all Epson media (which appear in Photoshop with their full names spelled out!) and has a number of neat features, including "single cut" to economically cut adjacent prints where the two images adjoin (perect 1 pixel accuracy so far).
--The larger, multi-line, color display makes setting up parameters much more intuitive. Includes a convenient report of .ml ink and cm2 paper used on last job, plus ink cart capacity in 1% increments. It's too early in our use to verify, but the panel reports an average of 0.4ml of total ink consumption for an 8x10. That's a relief, because our little box of 11 350's set us back $1750 (close to half the cost of the printer!) so we'd like it to last.
--Almost twice as fast as our previous generation Epson printers--the heavy printhead still rocks the stand slightly, though.
--The auto-head cleaning feature so far works quickly and well, with virtually no ink use and without paper.
--The manual suggests that the included 110ml carts are just enough for the initial charge. We were pleased to discover that 10 had 60% left over, and 1 (light black) had 35%. Maintenance tank had 70% capacity remaining. A short roll of 24" double-weight matte is included.
SUMMARY: we purchased the 7900 for improved quality on fine art prints and we are very pleasantly surprised with the results. The convenience features are great bonuses. (We purchased our paper from B&H but not the 7900 unit itself.)

This is my fourth Epson printer. I would rate the quality of prints in both color and black and white at very close to five stars. Yes, there are minor hassles with black ink switching, loading small sheets (8.5 x 11 with any kind of curl catches and bends without a little trick), and a few other quirks.

Ink wasting has been part of the package deal and I've accepted that. However, the x900 printers have a serious and fatal flaw. Search the various forums-- lots and lots of anecdotes of people's printers dying. Once a print head is clogged and can't be cleared even with power cleaning or maintenance mode cleaning, your printer is now an expensive paperweight. Call Epson once you are past the one year warranty and they will send Decision One to replace the print head at a cost of $2500 to $3000- more than the cost of the printer.

So, this is a printer with excellent output. But anecdotally it seems to have a higher failure rate including many people in less than two years. I'm looking at the Canons now even though I have always been a loyal Epson printer. Once you get a clog that can't be cleaned, you're done. It's worth doing a google search about x900 print head clogs before you buy . . .

I use this printer on a semi regular basis.Sometimes it sits idle for three weeks. When it sits idle that long it may need a nozzle cleaning, but not always. I have had this printer for 20 months and really have no complaints.

I had this printer for 2 years and 2 weeks before I started getting an unclearable clog in my light black nozzle. No matter what I've done, it only seems to get worse. Do not, I repeat, do not buy this printer with the extended warranty. It's expensive, but theirs a reason for it. Right now I'm looking at any where between $ and $ to repair. While it was working, I got amazing prints. Right now I'm trying to be serene about my options, but I;m finding it hard. Epson has told me that it's nothing I've done, it just happens sometimes, and I should have bought the warranty (which I was dissuaded from). I've been using Epson Printers for over 20 years now, but truthfully, this stinks. After my computer, I use a printer more than any other piece of equipment I own, but am really thinking about Epson as a product line going forward.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 7900 Printer:

Great printer.. but.. It's soooo high maintenance. You cannot leave this printer alone for 2 days max or all its nozzles will clog. Which requires cleaning, and cleaning uses up ink. And Ink is very expensive. So, unless your pumping out a lot of projects, do not buy this printer..Plus you cannot return it.... It's too heavy to return, and they'll send a guy out to replace whatever is broken. They'll do whatever it takes to keep you buying the ink for this printer which is mostly used to unclog the nozzles.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 7900 Printer:

I have had the 7900 for over 10 months and have made about 700 prints to date. Prior to the purchase, I read many reviews that complained about nozzle clogs that were difficult or impossible to clear. I considered other 24" printers but, although some are very good, the output of the 7900 was sufficiently superior to warrant taking a chance.I use only Epson ink and paper and adhere strictly to the operating instructions in the manual. While I do get an occasional nozzle clog, they have all been easy to clear with a normal cleaning cycle that cleans just the nozzle pairs affected by the clog. This only takes a couple of minutes and uses very little ink.I have had Automatic Nozzle Cleaning turned off since I got the printer and only clean nozzle pairs when I see a clog on a printed nozzle check. I print nozzle checks every time I turn the printer on even if it has been off for only a day. I also print a nozzle pattern if I switch black inks. It is very important to carefully study the printed nozzle check pattern using an 8 power or stronger loupe and a strong light. By doing so, you will be able to detect the very slightest nozzle clog and clear it easily before it becomes stubborn. I try to run the printer at least every 4 or 5 days, even if just to print a nozzle check. That helps to keep the heads from drying out. However, I have left the printer for about 2 weeks and not had a nozzle clog.If you live in a dry climate, it may help to keep the humidity in the vicinity of the printer to at least 40%. I also keep the printer very clean as excessive paper dust is a potential problem. Especially after using fine art (matte) papers, I use a dedicated shop vacuum to clean the accessible parts of the printer. I keep the printer covered when not in use with a custom cover made by Digital Deck Covers.I have replaced the wiper blade once, myself. This is very easy to do and will avoid a service call which can be pricey. There is an excellent video showing "how to" on my[@] I also remove and gently rock each ink cartridge about every 3 months - do not shake - just rock 2 or 3 times and replace. All of this may sound like a lot of trouble but it really isn't when you make it a routine. The bottom line is that if you want the very highest quality fine art prints, the 7900 has no equal.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 7900 Printer:

I would be considered a light user and this printer is designed for heavy duty use. I purchased this in Oct. 2012 and have had problems with clogged nozzles. I did nozzle cleanings after nozzle cleanings which worked and I was able to print. Finally the cleanings were unsuccessful and the printer frooze, wouldn't allow me to print. Fortunately I have the extended in home warranty, 3 yrs., and an Epson tech came, cleaned everything. This worked until two days after he left. I called and Epson sent another tech who checked, cleaned and actually replaced the printhead. The head is a $1600.00 + part.
Even with this done I have to run, at minimum, a nozzle check every day or the cyan & orange nozzles clog and I must run a cleaning - for that nozzle pair. The one tech explained to me that this line of printers are workhorses, they need to be used - a lot.
I have had many Epson products, several smaller format photo printers, 2 pro photo scanners and a couple all-in-ones. Never a problem with any. Funny, I make the move into the large format PRO printer line and I am having, what I consider an on going MINOR problem (nozzle clogging/cleaning).
I recommend this printer to the heavy duty users or to those who can afford this printer and what goes with it.
As I am now going to put this printer to more use, i thought by limiting the use I was preserving the printer (I was wrong), I may have more info. in a few months, after heavy use.

The colors are amazing, i give it to epson, what I DON"T like is how much ink is spent, even after altering the settings the auto cleaning eats up 26ml of ink !!!!! WHAT the Heck !!!
when changing media type the colors get all screwed up, i'm a doit yourself photographer and if the printer was fail safe i'd give it a 5 stars, so far i'm pleased with the prints but a few minutes ago i printed a 17x22 but the printer didn't cut it automatically,, this is rather random and i had to manually align to cut ut, there is a scisors symbols inside and one would think, ok, i align it with that and when i pressed the button guess what, the printer cut exactly 2 1/2 inches of the print !!! in the picture you'll see that is wrinkled up since i got so upset...
                thanks epson. !!

I have enjoyed really great prints from my Stylus Pro 3880 for several years, but wanted to be able to print larger than 38in x 17in.

Unfortunately, I just don't have the space in my "den" for a 9900, so settled for a 7900. I do still yearn for a 9900 - especially after seeing such magnificent prints coming out of the 7900...

While it's not particularly easy to see the difference between prints made with the 3880 and 7900 on the same media, the latter definitely wins.

If you want a 24in or 44in high-end printer that is capable of making superb images, you simply cannot go wrong with one of these.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 7900 Printer:

It's been three years since I got this printer and figured it was time I share my opinion. Let me say that this is the first time ever I really felt the need to share my favorable opinion of a product. I am a small scale school photographer, wedding photographer, and portrait photographer that has had some bad luck with the lab. Being a "do-it-your-selfer", My partner and I decided to invest in this printer and print our own work.
Our plan was to learn the printer over the winter, and use it the following season. We got an order back from the lab that was totally unacceptable, so the next day we set the printer up and began redoing the order. When the very first print was finished, we just looked at each other in amazement. I never would have guessed that a print of that quality could have come from an ink jet printer, and definitely not from a printer in that price range. The blacks are beautiful, the colors are extremely accurate and vibrant. The print quality in my opinion was equal to that of a professional lab, and far surpassed the quality I was receiving from my lab.
As of now, I have printed around 3500 linear ft. of premium luster 260 paper in 24" wide rolls. The quality today is just as good as it was on day one. The only maintenance I have done to the printer, aside from replacing ink cartridges, is replacing the cutter blade one time, and the maintenance tank twice.
To this day, I still inspect every print I do, and I still look at them in amazement. The smallest details are sharp and accurate, every print. If you are skeptical, don't be. You will not be disappointed. In savings over the lab cost, this printer paid for itself in just over one year.

                          Ease of use is great

Constant print head cleaning of the Cyan and Light Black heads are expensive and diminish the quality of this product. Missing one day of printing always require a print head cleaning. I received the printer on the 3rd of July and five print head cleaning later, I am frustrated with the waste of ink.

I have no complaints about my Epson R3000 with print head clogging. even after a week of sitting.

Fairly easy to set up, instructions were good... Definitely need two people to get it set up on stand, but after that one person can do it fine. Haven't printed too much yet, but so far quality is very good! I think we're going to love it!

State of the art printer... top of the line!
I use this printer for photographic prints. The 7900 Sytlus Pro produces extremely accurate color and B&W prints with a very smooth tonal range. It uses 11 different Ultra Chrome HDR inks, so the transition of colors is very fine with good shadow and hilghlight detail. The printer is very bulky and big, but should be expected for a large format professional imaging solution.

I'm a fine art photographer. Other professional photographers recommended I purchase my own printer, rather than paying someone else to do my printing. Have had the printer a short while and am pleased with the quality of the prints thus far. Epson technical support assisted me in setting up. Would recommend this printer to any serious professional photographer.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 7900 Printer:

It's worth doing a google search about x900 print head clogs before you buy . . .

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 7900 Printer:

We use our Epson printers for commercial press proofing as well as fine art/giclee prints. Very impressed with the quality and the speed. Cutting is faster and more intelligent and overall print speed is substantially better than our old 7800. The shift between Matte Black and Photo Black is relatively painless, though it does take a few moments. The printer automatically performs nozzle checks and notifies you when the heads need cleaned. It is larger than the older models, so something to be aware of if that could be an issue. The other thing is that it seems to be more efficient with ink. The 110ml cartridges that came with the machine lasted us for more than 300' of posters and prints.

Print quality is ex. I am a serious amateur photographer for 40 years and new to digital. I bought this printer when Epson sent me a discount coupon. I've had it for 1.9 years and haven't used it much because of a new home and digital learning curve. I've printed maybe 15 prints and performed many head cleanings. It was fine until I went on a 2 wk vacation. When I got back I couldn't get the Cyan nozzle to print w/o drop outs. No matter how many cleanings or power cleanings. Cost to fix, about $2500 ($1800 for new head @ $175 hr labor). Also, you can't get the parts yourself or the program required to calibrate. Don't buy it unless you are rich. Having a boat or a drug habit would be more economical than owning this printer.
