I have been copying segments of tapes made by my Sony handycams (one analog and one digital on tape)and the results provide very good quality images. So far, I have made 15 discs and the machine has worked flawlessly. I had a frustrating experience with a competitors model two years ago, so I was hesitant to buy any DVD recorder after that experience and reading all the troubles people are reporting eith other brands. But, based on the reviews posted here, I decided to take a chance on this mfr and model.

First, the unit allows pausing during the recording so I can go forwards and backwards on the handycam to do scene sequencing. My earlier adventure required shutting the DVD recorder off in order to do that, with the resultant video and audio flutter and broken images on re-start of the recording. This one does it seamlessly!!!

I also copy TV programs from my DVR's hard disk drive onto DVDs so that I have a permanent copy. I do this manually. I set up the DVD recorder, select the DVR show, hit Record and Play, and the copying starts. I leave the room while it copies and use a kitchen timer to know when to go back and turn off the DVD unit.

I will say that the unit has alot of features I will never use (like timer recording) and the instruction manual naturally has to cover everything, so it is an imposing document. BUT..it has to be one of the most understandable and logical manuals ever produced. They really put an effort into step by step procedures for each operation. Applicable steps are shown next to a picture of the remote on which the applicable keys are darkened. Very nice idea for us normal humans. As others have mentioned, read through the manual to get a feel for its organization, note the glossary and index, and then begin to enter language, date, and other preferences per the sequence in the manual. I was impressed that Toshiba listed EXACTLY what discs to get. They have several manufacturer's and speed listed, which I followed. I was not sure about the differences between R factors. Mystery about plus, minus, and RW is clarified on a nice table for the user. I used the big online store to order the specific brand discs. So far, I think this is an excellent choice in DVD recorders for my purpose.

I did make my own set of steps/choices for formatting and recording and finalizing. That way I do not have to have the manual at hand.

The doors to both the DVD and VHS drives did not open. The Toshiba phone number that came with the product for customer support connected you to a computer message telling you to go to a website. The website in turn told you to call the number already given. I had to call the number for laptop customer support to actually speak to a human being who in turn gave me a working # for the DVD/VHS Recorder support. After all this I was told the problem was obviously mechanical (I had managed to figure that out on my own) and instructed me to return the item to B&H for an even exchange. Customer support at B&H- unlike Toshiba- was easy to reach and has been working to resolve the issue (they were unfortunately out of stock so unless they have a comperable item, I will be refunded). B&H has very good customer support and I will shop with them again. I will however not be looking at Toshiba products. The product and Toshiba's customer support did not rate the single star I gave but no star was not an option. B&H customer service rates a 5 star.

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:

Used this to make copies from VCR to DVD. The instructions in the manual do not tell you all the things you actually need to do to make VCR-DVD copies, fortunately there are many posts in the internet.... Copies that were made were fine.

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:

This is a great product for people that may have a number of VHS tapes of personal videos. IE: Weddings, Children, etc. I already have two Toshiba DVD recorders (DR430's), and that's one reason I was interested in this one, especially since I have about 230 VHS tapes that have old TV recordings on them, most of which cannot be found on DVD. I was down to my last functional VHS player, and I was getting concerned. Keep in mind, this type of equipment is getting very rare. I advise to stock up soon, and actually use the equipment. Don't let it just sit for years before you use it. I am going to say this product is easy to use as far as I'm concerned. However, since most people had trouble setting the clock their VCR's, I'm not 100% sure that's the case. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I am an audio/video electronics guy all my life, so for me, it WAS easy. I do most of my video editing via computer, and therefore, I believe any limited amount of editing with this machine would be a nightmare.

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:

After searching online for a reasonably priced DVD/VCR player, I found this one. I purchased it to replace the one I had that was about 10 yrs old as I still have quite a few VCR tapes and DVD discs. I was not willing to give them up nor was I willing to pay $500 for a replacement. It was exactly as advertised and took me only a few minutes to hook it up. The best thing is the HDMI port which has enabled my digital TV to truly capture the clarity and crispness of the recordings. It was also easy to hook up the stereo component system to allow me to enhance the audio of the recordings.

Easy to follow directions and on screen menus for converting a chance tape to DVD. Put the VHS tape and blank DVD in; press play pause and dub. Go back into menus and finalize the DVD. I have yet to figure out how put the content of more than one VHS tape on a single DVD; the instructions were less clear on this. Not a big deal since blank DVDs are inexpensive. I really like that this unit has an HDMI out which is usable as you're moving material from tape to DVD.

Our former unit suddenly gobbled up a presceous irreplacible DVD disk. This replacement came on time and with a minimum of effort. I was also impressed with the availability to copy our old VHS films to a future usable state for our family archives.

I've been using this to copy VHS tapes to DVD and it works great. It has a comprehensive owner's manual that is easy to understand. The quality of the DVDs is very good and the unit itself has performed well. The method for entering chapter titles is a little cumbersome at first but it comes quickly.

Makes great DVDs from our family VHS tapes. Menu's are a little difficult to understand at first but after a small learning curve, no problems. I'm impressed with the picture quality from the DVD, I don't remember the tapes looking this good. Excellent picture quality when played on our Hi-Def TV. Basically this Toshiba is easy to use, and I recommend it to convert your VHS tapes to DVD.

I am making DVDS from my video recorder and copying old VHS tapes to DVDS too. Just make sure you are recording from LA and follow instructions on pages 50 and 51. Go back to "setup" to finalize the disk. Pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:

I bought this to replace an old Panasonic DVD recorder that ran reliably for over 10 years until it died a sudden death. There are not so many companies making DVD recorders any more. Funai it turns out is making the bulk of these machines either under their name of licensing agreements. But I did not know that when I ordered.I have ordered many things from B&H and they have always delivered as promised. This order was the same good service. As for the machine, it is made very flimsy. Lots of plastic like most things today. The DVD drive makes a lot of whirling noise as the disc spins. Much more so than cheap standalone DVD players I have. It cannot record to DVD-Ram discs like my older Panasonics but it does record just fine to DVD+RW. The manual is really poor at walking you through the steps to dub from Tape to DVD. An online search found many people having trouble dubbing. Most them it turns out had trouble with the instructions. The key point is the final instruction which called for you to push the button labeled: REC Mode not the button labeled REC.REC button is very prominent and easy to see since it is red. The REC Mode button on the other hand is not easy to see and in a low light setting very tough to read. Once the correct button is found dubbing went very well.Recording from satellite to DVD is easy to setup the scheduling but again the instructions are a bit odd. After setting the scheduling and exiting the schedule setup I would normally have been done. Not with this recorder. You still have to push a button on the controller to actually start the timer function. The button is labeled "Timer Set" and the instructions refer to this as entering timer-standby mode. Toshiba people apparently consider starting the timer to run as "standby". Another interesting thing I found is when I view the recording and dubbed DVD in my computer the video folder on the disc is labeled Funai Video.A search of the internet leads to information that suggests Funai makes this for Toshiba. And Funai sells nearly the same machine under their brand name. Just the front of the machines look different. Toshiba cost me $20 more than Funai. So it goes. If I thought only of the poor manual I would rate it 2-stars. But once you are past the manual the machine is probably as good as you will get these days for around $[$]. I am not commenting on the video quality ... recorded off satellite nice and clear but I am not using it as my primary viewing DVD player. My main use is recording off satellite.... keep in mind the machine does have copyright protection functions ... supposedly it will refuse to record copyright protect broadcasts like Pay For View.

I bought this to copy about 30 VHS tapes I took in the early 90s to DVD. I was concerned that the tapes were slowly disintegrating. This machined made the process pretty easy- once I fully read the directions! Tip- be sure to "Finalize" after recording so you can view the DVD on other machines. Next I copied the DVDs onto hard drives for futher archival purposes. So, I've run 30 old tapes through this thing and it's still going strong. I recommend it if you are looking to convert your old VHS tapes to DVD.

I am a documentary producer. I usually do productions which need to access VHS video tapes and my Toshiba DVR620 DVD/VCR Recorder Combo does a great job in transferring those old video footage to my DVDs. Recently I won a prize in a Film Documentary competition. Bravo to my DVD/VCR equipment! Thanks B&H.
