I use this product for home recording with Logic Pro 9, Ableton Live, and surround monitoring with Soundtrack Pro.

In recording, the pre-amps sound clear, colorless, but not as much head-room as you might hear in the Presonus FireStudio (I'm told this has to do with the power lead.)

Latency is not bad - it takes a little experimenting and research. Obvi, this is not an RME Fireface so you get a little "chorus/phase" effect on incoming signal while you record. Is it annoying? Can be, sure. I'm confident that a little tweaking might be able to reduce/remove the audible effect of the latency. For the money, I'm willing to deal with it.

Other issues include no locking mechanism for the XLR inputs. Most equipment I have has some sort of lock/release tab or button or something that keeps the XLR cable in place. This unit does not. I'll just have to be careful.

Dual headphone jacks (separate volume knobs) are helpful, as is the front-panel LED peak display. Also, I like how this thing looks. Elegant and straight-forward, not spacey and arcane. The mixer/router software is okay, but not inspiring.

I used to have a nice ProTools LE system with the Digi002, etc. Used it for roughly six years before I got fed up with proprietary this and dongle that. I left PTLE behind, and this is my first foray out into the world. So far, I am mostly pleased. However, this is just a step towards the RME Fireface 800. The Fireface over a grand more, and from what I've read, seen, and heard - it's the best thing out there in terms of FW interfaces.

I would recommend this device as a stepping stone. The Saffire Pro is a fraction of the cost of the RME, but performs most of it's basic functions. I didn't shell out the cash for the best, but this will do just fine for now until I can afford the RME.

So far this interface looks good. Headphone outs seem to be very low output I have it on 8 just to hear out of both jacks with 2 different headphones hd280s/7506s so I knows it's not my cans. Maybe it's just the unit idk. Was very dissapoint when I opened the box to see that no US power adapter was included contacted focusrite and got one sent and come to find out it didn't work! Bought one from radio shack today so now maybe I can record something with it!

Everything about this audio interface is great. The preamps, A/D coversion, construction, ability to add 8 more via ADAT connection, 2 headphones, the software. This is by far the best audio interface for the money you will find right now!

*One small issue, if you are using dynamic microphones for soft sound sources, the stock preamps will not handle it quietly, so you will need a channel strip or preamp for that situation with at least 60dB of clean gain.

Comments about Focusrite Saffire PRO 40 - FireWire Digital Audio Interface:

I own other Focusrite equipment which is why I did not hesitate to order the Protools-Saphire 40 bundle. If anything, I was more concerned about if PT would play nice with equipment from other mfgs. Well, everything went swell and Ive had no issues with either the software or hardware compatibility. I like the input/output options of the Saphire 40 and will most likely add a second one in the future. I am using PT10 (11 is downloaded and waiting) on a Macbook Pro Quad-core, the Saphire 40, Control 24( got it used) and various other sw/hw. Nice, fun and as Pro as I need.

Comments about Focusrite Saffire PRO 40 - FireWire Digital Audio Interface:

I have started to get more serious in my studio and bought the Saffire Pro 40 to replace a MBox 2 Pro. For a minimal upgrade in money, the sound upgrade was huge. The pre-amps sound much clearer than those of the MBox.

Basically I use it to record your typical rock band set up. The 8 inputs are helpful for drums, however only being able to control the phantom power 4 inputs at a time is a little bit of a drag, especially if you want to use more than 4 dynamic mics on your kit. Most of the time however, this isn't an issue. Other than that, totally worth the money and then some!

Focusrite are known for their preamps and this is a quality made, fine sounding unit. Easy to configure if you are use to working in protools - it can be a bit daunting if you let it - but big time flexibility - and once you get it set up - straightforward unit with great capability.

Comments about Focusrite Saffire PRO 40 - FireWire Digital Audio Interface:

The idea of "you get what you pay for" does not apply here. For the money I have not had a better interface.

This is replacing my FireWire Duet which had better headphone and mic preamps, but the converters sound shockingly similar. I've also had a MOTU 828mk3 and M-Audio ProFire 2626, which both offer some small features that the Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 doesn't (namely more digital inputs) but don't meet the quality of the converters and useful range of the preamps.

I've found the dim and mute buttons to be very handy, but perhaps too small. The software was less intuitive than M-Audio's and not quite as full featured as MOTU's, but will handle 95% of what I need it to do.

Compared to my past three interfaces (Duet, ProFire 2626, 828mk3) the Saffire Pro 40 meets or beats them. For the same price I would chose the Saffire every time; for significantly less money it's the best interface I've bought.

Used in my home studio alone with PRO24 DSP.
Driver can handle them both smoothly, mixer is flexible, allows any routing needed.
pre-amps are great, transparent and do a great job.

trying to think of something to change/improve - can't find any.

Comments about Focusrite Saffire PRO 40 - FireWire Digital Audio Interface:

For the last 3 years I had been recording through a PCI card (M-Audio Delta 1010lt) and while it offered numerous I/O options and low latency recording, there were a number of issues that made me look at alternatives. I wanted a low latency hardware option that had a decent number of I/O options, digital I/O (record guitar through SPDIF), easier access to inputs/outputs, MIDI I/O, headphone outputs and ability to easily mix inputs with DAW output (different headphone mixes and low latency monitoring). So after much research I decided to try the Saffire Pro 40 interface and have been using for 2 weeks now - first thoughts: this thing is well built, with quality being evident in the build. The interface is pretty much plug and play (after installation of the mixer software) and worked straight away after changing my ASIO parameters in Cubase - you will read reviews that give negative ratings to this hardware because of the complexity of the software. True, the mixer software is not-intuitive and needs a bit of learning, but spend the time to learn what it is and how to use it and it will tranform your studio. Tip: skip the manual, go to YouTube and watch the few mixer overview videos. It will become apparent why this software is necessarily complex, but outstandingly useful. I took 2 days of tinkering and I only regret that I didn't buy this sooner. This box is incredible - clean signals, plenty overhead, excellent Headphone controls, and flawless recording through SPDIF from my VG-99 guitar system. Only one minor gripe - understandable, but it would be nice to have access to more I/O on the front of the panel. But hey, there's only so much you can fit on a faceplate!

Comments about Focusrite Saffire PRO 40 - FireWire Digital Audio Interface:

This is a great audio interface. I use this to record multiple channels at a time and it works incredibly well for that. The pre's sound great with my mics and the features are unmatched from what I've seen in this price range. My computer is a tri core AMD running WXP sp3 that connects to this interface through the onboard 1394 chip. My DAW is Sonar X1. The connection has been solid with no issues whatsoever.

The mix control interface is a little difficult to grasp right out of the box, but after you get the hang of it it is an incredible tool that really opens up the possibilities with the Pro 40. The dual headphone outputs that can be individually assigned to different mixes is fairly intuitive and very beneficial. I can listen to the main mix while porting a different mix to the vocalist or guitarist or whomever to best suit their needs or wants.

The other features that I have really enjoyed are the two combo jacks on the front of the unit for easy access and the split phantom power controls where one button controls inputs 1-4 and the other controls 5-8. I also think that the loopback feature is very handy. This allows you to port any sounds from any other program to your DAW or insert it into any mix you create in the mix console. Until you have and use a feature like this you can't realize how beneficial it is.

The other features I've never had on my own equipment before, but that is really handy, is the mute and dim buttons for the main mix. This is really great for mixing and a standard high end feature.

The other great thing about this is being able to expand the inputs to 16 through the ADAT connection with an OctoPre MkII or Behringer ADA 8000. 16 mic inputs through this one small device! That is an incredible value and feature.

The only thing that I found that wasn't so great is that Focusrite no longer supports the Focusrite VST's that this product ships with. This wasn't really a bad thing as when I contacted Focusrite about it they were very prompt in replying and very helpful and in the end gave me an activation code for their Scarlett Plugin Suite, which is basically the same as their Focusrite Plugin Suite. So in the end, not a negative at all. Great customer service and great results.

Overall, I would highly recommend this to anyone.

Comments about Focusrite Saffire PRO 40 - FireWire Digital Audio Interface:

I use the Saffire pro 40 in my home studio and the quality of the mic pres are fantastic. There is very little recording latency and the Mix Control software affords you a great amount of flexibility when it comes to routing. The one downside to this product is it can be very picky when it comes to drivers with windows (7). There are myriad solutions for these problems but no one solid fix so it does take research time to solve these issues.

Comments about Focusrite Saffire PRO 40 - FireWire Digital Audio Interface:

Was needing an interface to do many things in a single unit; preamps- but didin't want to sacrifice quality, multiple analog inputs- recording a band, or like me being able to leave the guitar, acoustic, bass, drum pads, etc, connected HUGE benefit to working quickly. Firewire much more confidence inspiring for me over USB.

Multiple digital outputs is great fo mixing and interfacing w/ effects processors and other guitar preamps/modelers with digital i/o. Very happy.
