I own a Nikon D3100 that I have become fairly accustumed with through use, a semester-long photography class, and just practice. My first purchase outside of the kit 18-55 lens was a 55-200, because I wanted more zoom capability. After having these two, on photo forums there were guys from the beginning stressing to get a prime lens to really teach you even more about photography, composition, etc.

I did a side by side comparison under the same light and was blown away with the results. Having the fast 1.8 aperture is truly the difference between a nice shot, and one that really stands out. I can't say enough good things about this lens, actually, it's making me dread putting on my others because the performance isn't nearly the same. Under low light conditions there is no way I'll ever shoot with my 18-55 again. Outside where its bright the aperture isn't as much of a deal breaker, but inside you can't compare unless you blow it out with flash.

I've been using this lens as my normal lens on a d90 now, taking the place of my 50mm f/1.8 Series E. There are two things about the 35mm that it does better for me. First, I like the field of view for 35mm a lot more than 50mm on a dx camera. Second, this lens is sharper than my 50mm f/1.8E. Unfortunately it seems to do about everything else than my 50mm, despite being a 20 year newer design. I'll hit on some strengths and weaknesses:

Strengths:
Size - not too much to say here..it's big enough for a great reasonable grip, the MF ring is easy to find. Nothing to complain about here.

Sharpness - it's usually pretty good in this respect, so good in fact I think that causes problems when it comes to the transition between in focus and out of focus, and the bokeh quality, but more on that later. This lens is a 3.5 out of 5 on sharpness in my book - pretty good with lenses like the 75-150 Series E getting a 4.5 and the 180/2.8 AIS (legendary) getting a 5. Do avoid being wide open when going for sharpness (as with about every other lens on the planet) but it doesn't take much stopping down for it to get its act together. At f/2.5 its output is pretty good.

Volume - it's AF motor is quiet. I can't think of any scenario in which it may be a problem.

Flare resistance - I haven't felt the need to use the supplied hood.

Weaknesses:
Image Quality - the lens is sharp, but the transition between the in focus areas and the out of focus areas is a clearly visible line. I'll avoid shallow depth of field photos with this lens. It's just disappointing.

- in addition the quality of the out of focus areas (bokeh) hasn't been so spectacular in my book. It's just not that smooth. The moderately fast aperture allows you to throw the background out of focus fairly easily, but with the quality of the oof areas leaves that fast aperture is for light gathering, not depth of field control, in my book.

Controls - I'm used to vintage lenses with a proper aperture control, using this G lens is simply put silly. The two control dials on my d90 that I must use with this lens to set exposure is such a clunky design. I can't believe it's the best Canon, Nikon, Pentax, all the dSLR makers have come up with. A proper aperture control ring puts both hands into play engaging more of the body. With an AF-S G lens my left hand has nothing to do, and it leaves me feeling more disconnected from the picture taking.

Bundled pouch - the pouch bundled for this lens is a joke.

Bottom line --
If you're looking for a lens to mount to take photos of friends that can handle the dark this is a great, inexpensive option. If you're looking for anything that involves throwing the background out of focus I'd look elsewhere.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Lens:

First time using a prime lens. My three other lenses are zoom. Much improved quality during low light conditions. You can really notice the difference between the 35mm prime and the 35mm on a 18-55 lens. Happy with this purchase!

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Lens:

AF-S DX NIKKOR 35 mm f/1.8 G is fast fixed-lens designed specifically for Nikon SLR cameras with APS-C matrix. At very affordable price this lens has all the advantages of expensive fixes: the sharpness of the image, high aperture ratio and, as a result, pleasant and mild blurring the background. Focal length 35 mm camera with a reduced matrix corresponds roughly to the 52 mm on full frame. In other words, this lens is the equivalent of the classic "some statistics" for "SLR" cameras. This is one of the most versatile fixes, equally well with any emerging genres of photography.

I'm new to DSLR photography with a limited budget. This lens was very affordable and perfect for my Nikon D3500. I plan to use it for general photography. I don't like zoom lenses. The 1.8 max aperture gives nice bokeh in the right situation. The manual focus ring is not very smooth.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Lens:

I always thought this lens was soft and poorly made as my higher end lenses like the 105 micro are in a whole other league of sharpness. While that is an unfair comparison in some ways, when I learned about AF fine tuning and bought a chart (Datacolor SpyderLensCal Autofocus Calibration Aid), I found out my 35mm had significant backfocussing issues. With all new lenses, while they're under warranty and before you take a ton of soft photos, it's important to adjust the AF fine tune in each body you use and be sure the lens doesn't need further correction. It's over $100 to have Nikon correct the lens out of warranty.

I am very pleased with the performance of the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G on my Nikon D5200. the f/1.8 is great for low light situations. It also gives me the ability to be more artistic by creating a shallow depth of field to isolate a focal point in an image. A majority of the time I shoot with my nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 because it cover such a wide rage and does a great job. But when I want to shoot night skies or create a shallow depth of field I bust out the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G.

This Nikon 35mm DX lens ranks with the best of the best. It yields an equivalent 52mm on a DX body, is extremely sharp, and is bargain basement priced. Any half-way serious photographer with a DX body who does not have this lens in his arsenal ought to have his head examined.

My six year old 35mm lens that I loved to use on my D5000 back focuses slightly, but enough to notice on high res cameras. I never realized it until I started shooting with a used D5300 that I got for a great prize. At first I was worried that it could be the camera, but after extensive testing with all my lenses and with the D5000, it turned out to be the lens.

I immediately carefully tested the new lens and I had no problems.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Lens:

This is perhaps one of the best DX lenses Nikon has available and considering the price it may very well be the best value lens you can buy on the DX side of things. I use it paired with a D3300 and the performance is simply excellent. The 18-55 kit lens is nice but it just does not do what I need to in low light. This lens comes in where the kit lens leaves off in terms of low light performance. I just spent a week with the lens in Paris and never even bothered to use my kit lens, I used this lens almost exclusively all week with some great results.

                        Pros:
                        - Great in low light
                        - Very very fair price for what you get
                        - Light and easy to carry around
                        - Durable (I like the metal mount vs the plastic one on the kit lens)
                        - Same 52mm filter mount so all my filters fit

                        Cons:
                        - No VR but that does not really matter considering the speed of the lens it would be useless
                        - May focus hunt in very very low light if you manually select only an outer focus point (this may also have been a result of my D3300)
                        - The manual focus ring is nice but is nothing like the old nikon lens I love.

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite lenses and is well worth a place in anyones DX lens selection. Frankly I would ditch the kit lens for one of these after having spent this great week with it.

This is my first prime lens and I am very happy I made the purchase. It is a perfect learning tool into zooming with your feet and taking pictures from different angles and distances. I have only had it for a week, but have already had a few really nice photos. Can't be the price ether.

It is great to have a smaller lens again. I hadn't been using a smaller lens for awhile. Very convenient and compact.

I have the d5300, and it came with a zoom lens. I purchased this as an everyday lens, and it's great! Excellent for low light pics.
