I bought this stand because of its compactness and lightness. The stand is great for on-location work when space is a premium and/or need a stand with smaller footprint. It is also fairly effective as a boom as an assistant can easily hold it because it is lightweight.

Because it is so light and compact, don't expect to load with heavy lighting equipment or accessories. Also, be aware that the stand is NOT air-cushioned, so when loosening sections they could slam down.

David Hobby and Bob Krist fervently endorse this compact - but flimsy - light stand; sorry, but I can't. The basic assets of portability and compactness frustratingly overridden by jello-like stability during adjustments, which means waiting... and waiting for the "tensile wavering" to subside before you can continue shooting. Why make that sort of compromise, unless excessive girth the ONLY concern?

If you barely touch your lights, or don't extend much beyond the middle range of the stand's maximum height, go for it. It's still decently constructed, with good mechanicals, but too petite to inspire much expectation at taller extension, at least with an umbrella on board. Strobe-only use may be acceptable to most.

Comments about Manfrotto 5001B Nano Black Light Stand - 6.2' (1.9m):

I love how small, light, and compact this lightstand is. I can take it anywhere. However, the clamps are hard to tighten enough to hold even a simple strobe without sliding down. After less than a year, the top clamp just snapped in half. I'm probably going to replace it though, because I can't find another light stand that's the same size or smaller with better construction. If anyone knows of one, let me know.

Love this light stand. It is durable, light, and easy to pack when traveling for a shoot. In fact, you can pack three stands plus other gear in a suitcase that fits in the overhead compartment on a plane!

Comments about Manfrotto 5001B Nano Black Light Stand - 6.2' (1.9m):

I inherited an old, heavy, giant Manfrotto light stand from my dad. It is great, but entirely too large and heavy. The manfrotto nano is perfect for my needs--light and holds my speedlight and lightbox.

This thing is crazy small when it's folded. I haven't measured it yet when it's folded, and the specs say 19". It's very sturdy when employed. I don't know if I'd trust it to hold up my Einsteins, but I feel very comfortable using it to hold my reflector panel.

              Exactly As I Had Anticipated

Comments about Manfrotto 5001B Nano Black Light Stand - 6.2' (1.9m):

I have been thinking about getting this diminutive light stand for a while. I finally had a good reason to get one for an upcoming airline trip. It works just as I anticipated it would. Don't expect it to be as steady as a regular light stand. Remember though, it's no problem if the 5001B moves during the exposure. Since the photons emitted from the strobe come out at the speed of light and the flash is of such short duration, movement in the stand will not affect the image at all.

Comments about Manfrotto 5001B Nano Black Light Stand - 6.2' (1.9m):

I have many larger and heavier light stands, but purchased these for use in a compact interview kit I'm putting together based around small LED fixtures. These stands are lightweight and not terribly tall, so they will work best with smaller lights that are positioned fairly close to the subject. But three of them fit in a 22" tripod bag and weigh almost nothing, so they're perfect for traveling or quick-in, quick-out run'n'gun shooting situations. The fit and finish are typical Manfrotto; everything looks smooth and sturdy, and the parts lock securely. They come with a versatile top stud and adapter, the same as on my larger Manfrotto stands, that will work with 5/8" lights, 3/8" microphone mounts or 1/4" accessories interchangeably. Very versatile.

Due to their lightweight construction and modest leg spread, I'd recommend using sandbags to stabilize these if you have more than a pound or two of weight on them.

I travel frequently and needed something that would fit in my suitcase so I wouldn't have to pack an additional stand bag. I use this one for my Canon 600 flash. It's definitely small and portable which is great but the trade off is that it seems a little flimsy. You without a doubt need to use it with a sand bag if the flash is going to be anywhere near any people that might accidentally touch it.

I've equipped my staff with these stands for years. They're compact enough to easily fit in a soft light case with an instrument attached to them, which makes setting up quickly a snap. They are a great tool for ENG work.

Comments about Manfrotto 5001B Nano Black Light Stand - 6.2' (1.9m):

This is a great little compact stand that can hold a surprisingly high amount of weight.

My intention for purchasing this light stand was to find a fit for the third light I use when lighting interview subjects - which is a small LED light with variable color temperature. This works great for this purpose. The stand folds up and is light. This is the other reason for its purchase - I am seeking ways to lighten my kit overall.

For most of the shoots I do, we often have to load up and set-up quickly and the less weight we haul, the easier it is to set-up everything.

I'm almost tempted to replace all my stands with this one, but the concern I have is that I am not sure this stand is great once it has been extended very high with a heavier light. I use 1x1 LED panels, which are themselves light, but often I will couple the light with a larger gold mount battery with a v-mount adapter. This combination increases the weight, and it makes me concerned about setting it up with a client shoot where the light to fall.

The stand could certainly hold the weight, but because it's so light, it would be easy to have a very top-heavy light with the battery included. I'll experiment in the future to see if this may isn't an issue, but for now, I'm being cautious and will stick to the larger stands.

For that reason, I'm not yet going to replace all of my stands, but as far as the third light stand is concerned, this works great.

The portability is also wonderful. It's amazing to have a light item to carry and break down quickly and effectively.

What's not so great about the product is how it would probably struggle to hold up heavier lights - I would think an Arri 650 would be too much and would probably think a 300 is about max. In a pinch, this stand could maybe hold up a 1K fresnel light, but that would be a little dangerous for my tastes. From my opinion and experience ,i think this light stand is ideal for a 150 with barn doors, but I would be hesitant to add too much more items.

The sturdy build means that I can weigh this down with a sandbag and not be too concerned.

In general, this is a great tool for production. Its price is a little higher than cheaper stands but it is well worth it. I am sure I will be using this for years to come.

Probably perfect for speedlights but too flimsy for strobes

Bought to use with Alien Bee strobes on location for corporate headshot shoots but even with very lightweight 43" umbrellas the top section of the stands bend under the weight and I don't feel confident using them.

This worked wonderfully for me the first & only time I've used it so far. I had to pack it in a 20" carryon to bring to a wedding & it fit without any problems. Great construction that feels very sturdy.
