I use the 50" Apollo regularly for location shooting with a studio strobe but have used it with my speedlights on occasion.

Likes:
1) Collapses like an umbrella so it travels easy and sets up super quick.

2) You can use this with any kind of light: strobes, power packs, speedlights, etc.

2) Provides great light. The price is right for what it is.

Dislikes:
1) Should come with at least a cardboard tube for storage. You'll need to find one- try a mailing store- otherwise you're going to break it if you travel with it.

2) If you use it hard (set up and tear down daily) the zippers will eventually blow. You can keep using it but I'm just sayin'. Wish it were a little more rugged but for the price I'm not complaining. If you keep it set up in your studio it will last forever.

3) There is very little ability to tilt the box up or down. 95% of the time I use it on a boom or with an assistant had holding it on a pole- both of which work fine.

NOTE: You should understand that you need to tear away the velcro front of the box to adjust the power of your light. Don't freak out. You'll get really fast at this after a while. While it is a bit of a pain that's the trade off you make to get a softbox you can use with any kind of light. (strobe, speedlight, flor, etc.)

You'll also need a cold-shoe fitting for a light stand to hold your strobe. They cost around $15.

Overall a highly versatile piece of gear for the price. Treat it gentle and work with its quirks and you'll be digging it.

I really like the convenience of setting this unit up and the light it provides. My biggest worry is longevity with it. One of the posts has already ripped through the small rubber boot at the end, and it constantly pops off after only a dozen or so uses.

Comments about Westcott Recessed Mega JS Apollo (50 x 50"):

Easy set up makes it portable but not good where there is much wind because of its shape and size. The light is soft and warm but it does not give off as much light as I was hoping for. I started with a Nikon 900 flash the went to a dual incandescent bulb set up. It is very light weight which makes it easy to move around but harder to use outdoors.

More than I expected, thought the 50 x 50 would be to large for a speedlite but fell in love with the light on first use, is now my go to softbox for speedlites and studio strobe.

Comments about Westcott Recessed Mega JS Apollo (50 x 50"):

The biggest issue I've had with this is that the way the zippers are arranged completely eliminates any sort of downward angle of the softbox. It makes no sense why they would make a softbox that can only be pointed straight at a subject. To use this effectively, you will need a boom for sure. I don't like spending more money than I have to, especially when it's something like this.

First let me get it out of the way... This thing is big. You read 50"x50" but you don't realize until you set it up. But because of its size it puts out the most wonderful light. Get this box in close to a subject and the light is soft and beautiful. More than worth the money. The only annoyance is when the box is mounted there is very little tilt possible. It's not a big issue since most of the time this huge box covers the subject but I did get a Baby Boomer - Mini Boom Arm / Offset Arm to help push the box forward on the stand, works perfectly. Highly recommend this box.

Comments about Westcott Recessed Mega JS Apollo (50 x 50"):

I was very disappointed in this product and returned it.
As several people have commented, the zipper arrangement restricts downward tilting of the light. I avoided this by using a boom stand.
However, this was a minor issue. The main problem I had is this: the design of the shaft with the tapered spindle and the wide plastic collar prevents the strobe (or speedlight) being placed back from the diffuser. If the light is used facing forward in 'softbox mode', its proximity to the diffuser gives little diffusion and a small light source. If the light is faced backward in 'umbrella mode', the quality of light produced is almost identical to that from my (simpler and cheaper) parabolic umbrella.

                For the money- 4 stars.

The construction is loose and cheap but not terrible. The design to attach like an umbrella to my novatron heads works well. Though the extra large size makes it a touch unwieldy for my portable kit equipment, if not a little unstable.
The quality of the light is good- smooth and diffuse as it should be. Wish the baffle was permanently attached instead of velcro'ed in so you dont run the risk of loosing it in transit. For the money- definitely a good deal.

When you need huge, soft, controlled light you can't go wrong here. As long as you don't want to tilt the box too much (the zippers allow for about 20 degrees of travel). The results are worth dealing with this, as getting this large of a light source with some direction produces results you can't get with a similar sized umbrella. Even a tiny speedlight fills the entire front with no hot spots. I just wish it came with a bag, I'd feel much better taking it on location then.

Very, very quick to set up, there is a 4-way zippered section on the bottom of the softbox, large enough for studio strobes, through which you can insert a light stand. You will need to line up the shortened stem with the center piece through which it extends, but there's really nothing to that. The stem is tapered, so you can only put it so far into an umbrella holder. I found that with a standard cold shoe bracket with an umbrella holder, mounted on a light stand, there was no way to tilt the softbox downward, as the stand was at the foremost edge of the zippered area. On a boom arm that would be possible. I like the size, and the deep recess, which will make feathering the light very easy. The material reminded me of the type of nylon used to make raincoats. It looks durable, and I can't wait to do more than a few test shots with this modifier. I bought this to use with both speedlights and studio strobes, and it will easily accept my Elinchrom RX-4 D-Lite strobes. My only possible complaint might be that it did not come with a grid, but that's a minor issue. This modifier also weighs less than my 7' parabolic umbrella from Impact, and about the same as my 5' Impact umbrella.

I know many reviews say that this thing is huge but until you open it in your own living room you really don't know how huge it is. Having said that the light is great and it's a wonderful soft box. Keep in mind that this is one softbox box that you don't want to use cheap stands with. The material really is kind of cheap and flimsy

I am new to studio lights and am very limited in space. This is very easy to set up and tear down and I have been having wonderful results from it!
