First off I must say ever since the original Gorillapod came out I thought they were useless. They seemed flimsy and cheap and would never be able to hold up a 'real' camera.

Let me say I was wrong. This thing is a beast. It EASILY holds my full frame Canon with my 70-200 f4 L lens, among others. The other night I was able to wrap it around a post and do some long exposure night photography. It fits in the bottom of my camera bag and weighs less than a pound. After using this I even bought their smaller model for my GoPro.

If you travel a lot, and don't want to bring a tripod but need it less than 1% of the time, this is for you.

I received this item as a bonus with my camera body purchase. I tried using it in a couple of different scenarios, both as a simple tripod on the ground, and using its gripping feature on a park bench and lightpole. What I found is that it is not up to the task of supporting a typical DSLR. I tried with my 60D and 6D, and it couldn't stabilize either one satisfactorily, even with a 50/1.8 on them.

In simple tripod arrangement, the camera bounces with ground vibration or wind, and I couldn't get a sharp shot with any shutter speed longer than what I could easily handhold with an IS lens. With my 24-70mm on either camera, it's completely unusable, it never stops swaying.

In gripping mode, things aren't much better. Any wind or ground vibration still resulted in unchecked oscillation of the camera. I watched live view mode in 5X, and it simply never settled to a still shot, hands off. You would need ideal conditions of no wind, no trucks driving past, etc., for it to stabilize. Also, if gripping something like a vertical pole, it's very difficult to get the camera in a normal landscape orientation.

I'm giving this product two stars not because it's entirely unusable--I think it would work fine to hold a GoPro or light P&S, possibly even a light SLR like the SL1 with kit lens or nifty fifty--but because the product has "SLR Zoom" in the name and I can't honestly see it being that usuable with normal size SLR cameras, or any of the SLR form factor mirrorless cameras, especially with a typical standard zoom lens like a 17-50/2.8 or 24-105/4.0 type.

Feels cheap but gets the job done

Comments about Joby Gorillapod SLR-Zoom Flexible Mini Tripod w/ BH1-01EN Ball Head:

The utility of the Joby Gorillapod is awesome. It is light, portable, and versatile. Great for propping your camera up on many different kinds of surfaces and for vlogging. The ball head is also exceptionally useful, although I do have concern it may break over time. It feels somewhat cheap, and I'm concerned the plastic may break if I over-tighten it to my camera. That said, I'm giving the Joby Gorillapod 5 stars because I love it and will get an enormous amount of use out of it. For $50 I would say this product is definitely worth it.

Great for hiking

By Woz

from Brookline

Comments about Joby Gorillapod SLR-Zoom Flexible Mini Tripod w/ BH1-01EN Ball Head:

Was hiking in Sierra Nevada and wanted a flexible small tripod. Easily fits in small bag or use legs to wrap in bungee cords of rucksack. Found it incredibly useful for slow shutter speed photos , taking photos of me and the other half using timer and placing the camera on uneven surfaces. Only thing is it's only as tall as the surface it's resting on so not a complete replacement for a full size tripod.

Comments about Joby Gorillapod SLR-Zoom Flexible Mini Tripod w/ BH1-01EN Ball Head:

This is a decent sized gorillapod, definitely capable of holding a full-sized DSLR. I use it with a mirrorless 4/3 camera (lumix G7) which is pretty light, so I probably could have gone smaller on the gorillapod.
The ball head is super useful with it's easy quick mount clip and easy tightening knob. The head is not meant for resistant panning, although I suppose you could adjust the knob just right to do that. For quick angle adjustments as it's intended, it's great.
The clip is secure, but mine is a tiny bit short of fitting. By that I mean when I put the clip in there is a tiny bit of extra room in the holder allowing a tiny bit of movement.

I use this on longer backpacking trips where I don't want to carry the weight of a full size tripod. Easy to set up on rocks or whatever you have at hand and the level included in the ball head helps a lot to line things up! I use it with my Sony a6000.

This was great for the few weeks it lasted. If any of the joints in the legs get loose, the tripod is basically useless. This happened to 3 joints on one leg of my tripod. Didn't last long at all.

Comments about Joby Gorillapod SLR-Zoom Flexible Mini Tripod w/ BH1-01EN Ball Head:

This is a nice little tripod to have with you when you want to carry as little as possible, but still want the option of some basic stabilization. I use this when I'm walking around with my Fuji XT-10, one extra lens and maybe a remote.

It gets very useful when the light is a little lower and shutter speeds start to slow down but you don't want to increase your ISO. This tripod is often allowed in many places where regular tripods are prohibited. And when the security guards say "no", then you can easily hide it in a large coat pocket. The ability to wrap the legs around objects is definitely a plus.

My only negative: the tripod head only has one knob to tighten the ball head. That means using it just to rotate the camera for a panorama is impossible, because the ball itself is loose. The gorilla model one size up has two knobs, so pano's are possible, but this tripod is already much bigger and bulkier. For me, size and weight were the priority.

I have no regrets purchasing this tripod.

This is a cute idea but of limited practicality in the field. Yes, it will grip things that you could just as easily lean against, maybe with a piece of clothing to cushion the camera, so then who needs it? Also it needs a better head with an Arca-Swiss type attachment, but there are many small, better pods to put it on. Its one advantage is price, but why waste money?

... oh that's right, I just had lousy shaky footage. Two seconds after removing it from the package, I broke one of the legs in half but it popped back together. That's probably the result of my incredible hulk strength though. I can topple buildings just by leaning against them. Takes some practice to adjust this but the biggest surprise of all is how much weight and unbalanced load it will support! Check out the photo I am uploading.Definitely glad I splurged for this model instead of the one that is $ or $ cheaper. The only other Joby product I own isn't all that made or designed but this one is great.

Comments about Joby Gorillapod SLR-Zoom Flexible Mini Tripod w/ BH1-01EN Ball Head:

I have a number of Joby Gorilla Pods and this is the first one for me designed for DSLR cameras. That spirit level comes in very handy when doing photos, like landscapes, groups, and architecture where a level horizon is essential. I also like the quick disconnect plate because it allow quick attachment/removal and use of the Pod with several cameras. The ball head with tighten is particularly handy because you can position the camera without manipulating the leg joints.

I realize that there are really two sizes of Gorilla Pods for DSLRs; this is the shorter of the two. It works for me because it is easy to carry on travel and field assignments. While it is called SLR-Zoom, I think it is primarily compatible with APS-C or crop sensor cameras, and full-frame DSLRs providing you are not using a large heavy zoom. For example, I get by with a 24-70 on a Nikon D750 FX providing I position the legs carefully and secure the camera with strap just in case it topples. I would not trust this one with a heavier and longer zoom like a 70-200 f2.8 or 300 f2.8. For those uses, I would recomment the larger version of this with its longer legs. When I have to work with a larger lens on field assignments, a real tripod is my choice.

In my case, I didn't expect to be mounting my 80-200 f2.8 for self timer group shots. Even with the heavier lens, I WOULD trust this as a camera stabilzer/steadier as long as the strap was around my neck for safety. I would also like to see some type of loupe for mounting a carrying strap on this one.

This is also handy for mounting Handycam-style camcorders for POV shots at weddings. (For my little POV cams, the smaller Gorillapods are fine.) I would have not problem using this to secure a 2 lb camera, but would want a safety strap when positioning larger video cams. Again, this is where that leveling bubble come in handy.

Its quick release plate is solid and particular useful when touring. Just leave the mounting plate attached and snap it onto cam. I also like compactness of this one because it fits in most bags.

Comments about Joby Gorillapod SLR-Zoom Flexible Mini Tripod w/ BH1-01EN Ball Head:

Gotta love this little guy for what it is. A mighty little thing. Works great for APS-C cameras and shorter lens and FX cameras and small lenses. This is not going to support a pro body with a 70-200. Its limit is a prosumer body with a 70-300, maybe a 70-200. Its happy place is in the FX w/ 24-70 range. With bigger lenses it wobbles on its own, but it works if you are using your hands to steady the body/lens.
