The D300s (purchased with 16-85 lens) is the beginning of my upgrade from D70 technology; I sold one of my D70 bodies and its 18-70 lens when getting the new combo. I have sevel other lenses, two SB-800 flashes, and one remaining D70 body. The D300s, now primary camera, will be used for personal creative photography, family events, casual portraits, and periodic business assignments in corporate portraiture, social events, and other business tasks. I've had the new cam and lens a little over a week now. My main goal in upgrading is the improved from the 6.1 MP resolution of the D70 and have improved focus and exposure accuracy. It was also time for a more sophisicticated camera. The D300s has accomplished all those things for me. It's like a performance sports car of cameras.

I particularly like the 51-point AF system, which is fast, accurate, and indicative of the part of the image used as focus reference. If I don't like what the camera picks, I can simply press again.

The cam's virtual horizon leveling feature is also very useful to me. It has been criticised by some for not having fore/aft leveling, but I still find it valuable because I have a ball-type tripod head for stills, and it doesn't have spirit levels.

This is a complex camera with a myriad of controls over all functions, even calibration of the focus for different lenses in one's collection. At the same time, the camera is user-friendly enough to be used simply and quickly, which gradually getting into the more sophisticated capabilities.

I'm learning to appreciate that dual-card slot on the D300s. I prefer CF cards for professional work, and I have them left over from my D70 period. But my laptop has an SD slot, and my newer camcorders use the format as well, and that makes it easy to shoot and offload quick shots. I also like that redundancy of being able to save to two cards at once; the event photo business demands this type of reliability.

Another improvement from earlier technology is in the pop-up flash and its use with the Creative Lighting System. With earlier bodies, the pop-up could trigger and control off camera Nikon CLS flashes, but would not contribute to exposure. With the D300s, the popup DOES can be adjusted to contribute to exposure, and the camera offers more sophisiticated control of the other flashes. From that, I can carry an external SB-800 flash, a simple lightstand, and a Gary Fong Puffer diffuser for the pop up, and I have a simple but very effective portrait or small group lighting system to make professional results.

I considered a wide range of other upgrade strategies besides the Nikon D300s, including the Nikon D90, D700, and even the Canon 7D and 5D Mk. II. The Canons were intriguing for their 1080p video capability, higher megapixel count, and fast response; however I didn't want to give up what I considered to be the superiority of Nikon glass and the Creative Lighting System flash technology. I came close to the D90 but felt it was not enough of a jump from my D70 technology. I rejected the D700 FX approach because it's cost was not justified by the fraction of my business devoted to photography.

Points for improvement: The D300s has 720-24p video. It's ok, but not up to the 1080-30p as with the Canon 7D and 5D Mk. II. Nikon could also be more competitive with the megapixel count and high ISO capabilities. So far batteries are not lasting as long as they did with my D70 cameras. Maybe that is to be expected with twice the pixel count and a much larger LCD. I'm also disappointed that it is not compatible with my set of ML-L3 remote triggers. If it had better video capability, I would have awarded all five stars.

The D300s met and so far has exceeded my goals for this upgrade. It is a fantastic creative tool.

The D300s is a great camera, I elected to get the BL-3 battery cover to get more FPS and it works beautifully. It can keep up with my D700 no problem. The video part of the D300s is fine but just wish it had manual exposure. Along with no full auto focus it makes it difficult to follow any action. The D300s is a great still camera, but is really very average in the use of video.

Comments about Nikon D300S DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I'd love to dis this camera, but I can't. I'm in the process of buying a 2nd D300s body. I'm up to 263.000 shutter actuations on my first D-300s and am about to purchase another. I'm a pro photographer working in the entertainment industry shooting stills for film and TV. My other cameras are D3s and a D-800. While this is not a full frame camera, it is one of the few cameras to have a 10 pin connection which is required for remote activation or to place inside a (sound) blimp. I was strongly considering a Nikon Df but because of no 10 pin connector decided against it.The 12.3 Mp DX format, in most cases works fine, I have even had images blown up to movie poster size that were totally satisfactory. I do get a solid 7fps which I need when shooting action scenes with only the D3s exceeding it by about 2fps (the D4s shoots at 11fps but more than double the cost of the D-800 with less resolution). I beat this camera up and it's pretty much stood up. The LCD screen has developed a line across it (vertical) that in no way affects the final output and isn't worth fixing. I feel the only shortcomings of this camera are its low light capabilities, for me shooting RAW, I feel I can get satisfactory images to iso 1600-2000, beyond that files start getting a bit to noisy. For me the advantage of DX format is magnification (tele-extension)of images without loss of light - my 70-200 f2.8 becomes a 105-300 f2.8 and file size as it takes more time to download and process larger files from my D-800, as well as using more storage room. Bottom line, highly recommended if you don't meed mega large files and aren't shooting in very low light all the time.

Can't get rid of it!

By SteveO

Comments about Nikon D300S DSLR Camera (Body Only):

Believe me, I've wanted to upgrade for a long while now. Nothing wrong with the camera, it's a great unit. I move to this from my D200 when it first came out, I think a lot of people did. But then I got megapixel envy and started lusting after the D700 then the D610, then the D810. But the prices of these full frame units just set me back. And now, looking back at all the great pictures I've taken all over the world with this camera, I can't imagine not keeping it. Add to this the 17-55 Nikor zoom I bought to compliment it at a cool $, I guess I'm all in. Why did I start thinking of upgrading in the first place? To me, at times, the shots I get from this product aren't the sharpest, I'm very picky. I've sent the lens back to nikon, can't tell if they really fixed anything. I've done in carmera lens adjustment; one adjustment looks great, then not so good at another time. It's confusing. Is it the camera, the lens or the operator? Some shots I've taken are truly sharp as a pin, (Tack sharp I think they call it), so it all can work. Then I start thinking about the 1080p monitor I'm viewing the pictures on, the video card... Do I need to buy at $3k Applie monitor that can display 4k??? drives you crazy. But back to the camera: low light is amazing, high shutter speed action shots not to be belived, incredible. HDR shooting has been very rewarding, a must do and this camera does it well. Ok, I guess I'm keeping it! I believe if you buy it, you will too.

Top of the DX food chain

Comments about Nikon D300S DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I've been shooting with my 300s for the past 4 years now. The build quality and features packed into this camera make it feel like it was designed for pros. A few months back ,my big, goofy 90 pound dog managed to hook the strap while he was jumping around and sent the camera flying across the room. The 18-55 kit lens snapped off (plastic mounts!) but the 300s emerged unscathed and working perfectly. Rugged indeed. From frosty Maine to balmy Negril , this camera took whatever I threw at it and then some. The D300s has a lot of features ,and to really get the most out of it , you need to familiarize yourself with what it can do. 4 years in and I still occasionally find new things. It's a familiar Nikon layout , comfortable , not too big or too small. It's starting to show its age as there are now better video capabilities ,wifi ,etc.. built in to newer cameras , but I find no reason to upgrade yet. Nikon got this camera right.

This camera has great versatility. It's my first camera that shoots video, and while it wasn't award-winning quality in low light, it still got the job done. Photos are great -- not much noise in high-ISO shots. Loved shooting a hockey game with it.

Comments about Nikon D300S DSLR Camera (Body Only):

Thought long and hard about buying this cam, I just bought a new different brand cam and lens a year ago that I do really love, but have always wanted a Nikon as part of my shooting gear. I saw some photos on a stock site that were shot with this D300s and then I was hooked.

    PROS:
This Cam is a very solid heavier cam than I am used to, but even with frozen hands and fingers in the past 2 weeks, I have had no problems holding, focusing, or actually shooting my photos. I take it outside every day, even at minus 55 degrees below zero with the wind chill and it performed at my top expectations. There is no lag or searching for the image to come into view like some cams I have tried, and the photos themselves are very rich looking with much detail and color. I don't use a tripod and even with the extra weight of the 300 lens on the front of it, I am able to keep the cam steady and straight.

I have not had time yet to load and play around with all the features, I usually do that in the field, and our weather has been brutally frigid so I am experimenting a little at a time.

The SD slot can load with 2 cards, I haven't had to use the second yet but have them loaded, just in case, and that is a really cool feature.

Battery Life is Awesome. I ordered an extra battery and charger, but have not had to reload while shooting and I am a heavy shooter, one trip out will consist of 1500 photos. And I can shoot all day and have no problems with low battery.

    CONS:

I never shoot with any of my cams after 3:30pm in the winter, the light is just not to my liking, but I did take the D300s out for a run at 4pm and found some of the photos were darker than what I like. I imagine once I start adjusting settings I will find a fix for lower light.

Because I have only had this for a short time, I can't give a full review, but for me this D300s is the best and nicest cam in my gear box today...

Comments about Nikon D300S DSLR Camera (Body Only):

As soon as I got it out from the box I was amazed with the quality of this camera, how its build, feels like a bullet proof camera but fits like silk gloves in to my hands. If you are in to video making skip this camera, there is other choices for you, this camera is not the best for that purpose, but if you are in to photography and your budged don't let u go for the D800, but you are looking for a reliable camera, this camera will take anything you throw at it, this will be the one. Great images, classic Nikon layout, built in flash, compatible with almost every Nikon lens built. Like my title says this camera it's on its way out, so get one before it's gone because will take some time before Nikon makes another DX build as good as this one with that price tag.In order to make this camera work at its fullest there is a lerning curve specially if you come from less sophisticated Nikons like D80's D5000's or D3000's.Once you get it it will be a different world.

Comments about Nikon D300S DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I just used this camera for a wedding, nothing to complain about. Battery life was good, several difficult shots, D300s handled with no problem.
When you need to carry it around your neck for hours it is a pleasure. Not too heavy. My D2x, a very good camera is too heavy to use like that.

Love this camera! Out preforms all the rest for it's price range and class. Never disappoints. I highly recommend this camera for it's semi-professional ability.

Comments about Nikon D300S DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I got mine almost three years ago - my first digital SLR after leaving film photography late.
This camera is still serving me very well! It's very user-friendly, great collors, also very easy to personelize it for own comfort, and the design is generally very comfortable.

It's very sturdy - it was with me during countless hikes in africa and the medeterranian, and I never felt the need to add a body armor.

Only thing I noticed is that many other cameras Live view settings and options are better, sometimes stops recording for no reason - still - it shoots HD, and it's not even one of the reasons I got it in the first place.

                        Thanks, B&H!

Comments about Nikon D300S DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I purchased the D300s for a wedding shoot, the camera worked flawlessly. Pictures look great, I was able to take multiple images (sometimes up to 10) with no delay in writing to the SD card. The camera is well balanced and easy to hold, even after 7 hours - with the MB-D10 battery pack and SB910 speedlight the weight was noticable, but not unbearable.
Overall, I really liked the camera and would highly recommend it for any photo enthusiast looking for a well made dependable camera.
