I use my gear mainly for professional work, but I also still have fun with personal photography projects too. This Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VRII lens when attached to my Nikon D600 is an excellent combination for capturing everything from the action at a sporting event to beautiful images of a family against the sunset or a young couple in love! The versatility of the f/2.8 aperture in low light situations, like at a High School Football game, allows for excellent results with sharpness and clarity that I was not able to achieve with my other zoom lenses (70-300 f/3.5-5.6) on this camera! I also ordered the Nikon D750 and received a substantial discount that made the purchase of these two amazing pieces of equipment that much sweeter! The staff at B&H were excellent to work with - knowledgeable and service oriented! The fast and free delivery was an extra bonus that I was not expecting! So, thank you B&H for helping to make my transaction excellent while helping me to save a substantial amount of money!

The three stars are a warning. This is the most agonizing lens I have ever owned. First, the good news. The image quality is superb. The autofocus on my D700 is dead on perfect. Color, contrast, and bokeh are all outstanding, with good sharpness at 2.8. The lens is a joy to use, quick and responsive, and the updated VR is excellent. I've made great shots handheld at 1/15 sec. which I never thought would be possible. This is a great improvement over the older version. Now the bad news. If you want tight head shots, forget it. Nikon has played a clever trick on us. At a working distance of 6 feet with the lens set at 200mm, the actual focal length is shortened to about 140mm. At 10 feet, its about 160mm. You can look it up, this information is all over the internet. You have to set focus over 35 feet away to get a true focal length of 200mm. By contrast, the older version of this lens only shortens to about 198mm. You have to decide for yourself whether or not this is a deal breaker for you. More importantly, my current copy is the third one I tried. I had to return two others to get one that worked right. The others produced images with noticeable blur along the right edge, and had a hot spot in the center (thank Lloyd Chambers for bringing this to everyone's attention). [...] In the end, I decided to keep the lens for its versatile zoom range. Besides, Nikon users just don't have any other options without going to third party lenses. I suggest that anyone considering this lens test it rigorously before accepting it.

Great Lens

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

This lens is heavy and built like a tank but as a result will certainly hold up to years worth of us. The lens is very sharp with fast autofocus. The VR works well enough that you will be more concerned with blur from subject movement than you will from camera shake. As part of the "trinity" series of lenses it is a must have for anyone serious about photography.

I have owned and rented many lenses over my lifetime but the quality and workmanship of this lens far exceeds anything else I have ever used. Some say, in the published reviews, that this is the best lens that Nikon has ever made. And I agree!

It's as good as you've heard it is.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

I have been hearing great things about this lens for years now, but when I upgraded to the full frame D750 recently I initially paired it with the 28-300mm VR lens. At first I was happy with the results I was getting thanks to the low light capability of the D750, but I quickly came to see the limitations of a "Do everything lens", particularly at longer focal lengths and in low light, so I decided to give the 70-200 a try.

I can tell you that I was impressed with the lens from the very first shot I took, it focuses Lightning quick and the images are amazingly sharp. While it is perfect for subjects at long distance in low light, what really impressed me is how useful it is for portraits, stand back, zoom all the way into 200mm at f2.8 and watch your subjects pop out.

i was concerned that I might miss the extra reach the 28-300 gave me vs the 200mm on this, but I really don't miss it and for those few occasions where I might need it, I think I'd be better off enlarging and cropping the sharper images I get with the 70-200 anyway. Also, another nice feature of the 70-200VR is that it pairs nicely with the Nikon TC-20 E III teleconverter which, for $499, will give you a sharp 400mm f5.6 lens.

The only downside I can see with this lens is that due to the fact that it is built like a tank, it also weighs as much as one. Some photographers may find this lens a little initimidating, but if you can get past its size and weight you will be well rewarded with a solid investment that pays dividends in great images.

Excellent

By Nick

from Cleveland, OH

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

This is the best 70-200 yet. Maybe not worth upgrading from the version I if you already have it, but if you need a 70-200, this is the best you can get. Major focus breathing; 200mm at close focus is actually shorter than 200, but this isn't really a problem when shooting portraiture or shooting distant objects. Just something to be aware of. Still the best so far. Definitely worth it.

Super Sharp

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

I borrowed one of these from a friend to use on a boat and hiking tour of Louisiana and Texas swamps. Perfect for when you'd like to get a little closer to a subject but can't haul a large telephoto due to weight and space logistics. The included collar makes it super maneuverable. SUper sharp image allows substantial cropping in post-production..
Having been able to use one for a couple of weeks I knew what to expect when mine arrived but was pleasantly surprised by the excellent case that's included

Nice lens

By NUGDS

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

I am happy with the quickness of the automatic focus response. I also like the color and sharpness. After taking over one thousand track pictures the first week, In all weather conditions, and another hundred indoor in poor lighting, I am satisfied with the lens and happy to add it to my collection.
The motion during zooming in and out is a little harder to position than I like. However, I am happy with the lens.

I mainly shoot fast primes on my D810. After debating if I should get a zoom (I'm a pixel peeper) I finally pulled the trigger. Let me tell you this, This pro lens will outlast any camera bodies and will serve you for many many years. The images I get from this pro lens is just as sharp as my fast primes. It is so good it's unbelievable. This is a lot of $$$ but it is worth every hard earned penny I make. You should save up and BUY IT! This is coming from a miser. Last but not the least, B&H is the BEST period.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

I don't know what I can say that hasn't been said in reviews here. This is the best 70-200 you can get (if you need f/2.8) for Nikon. There's a reason this is the flagship model.

Build quality is excellent. It's well weather-sealed, and even though I personally would never willingly do it, I wouldn't be scared if I got caught in the rain with this without protection. Light rain is no problem, I can vouch for that. It internally zooms, so you don't have an extending zoom at all. The lens hood attaches with a lock on it, so there's no chance of it accidentally turning or coming off. The zoom and focus rings turn smooth and are just the right resistance. It's a bit heavy, which is to be expected, but I have no problem hand-holding it for hours. The tripod ring does not come off, which is my only gripe, but the mount comes off the ring, which then has another threaded mount. I normally just keep the foot off the ring and use the ring's mount if I need a monopod. For a tripod, the foot would be beneficial for weight distribution.

Auto-focus speed, oh the AF speed! This is the fastest AF lens I have tried to date. Snaps where you want it fast and precisely. My lens copy focuses spot on, didn't have to fine-tune at all. This is hands-down the best 70-200 f/2.8 when it comes to AF.

Image quality is fantastic. Just the best. The Tamron has been shown to be sharper by just a hair during tests, but I prefer the look of the image overall from the Nikon. Bokeh is more visually pleasing to me, however small of a difference it may be. It's sharp throughout the range, even at f/2.8, and I don't really have to worry about keeping the f-stop higher to get sharp photos.

I have nothing bad to say about this lens. If you need this range, you need this lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

I bought the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 vrii to replace my trusty old Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 D lens after it started to fail. I knew the 70-200 was going to be my next one because I'd rented it a number of times and loved it!

This lens is deadly-sharp! Even wide open it's a force to be reckoned with. The focus is fast, quiet and sure. And it's built like a brick you-know-what. Not quite tank-like like the 80-200 in it's metal clad skin, but close enough that I'm not worried about it taking knocks from the many bar mitzvahs, weddings and events it will carry me through over the next few years. I shoot a lot, and my gear gets used very well. It also focuses about a foot closer than my old lens, which is 12" I really needed. If you've ever been on the dance floor of a wedding reception trying to make art with fast action and a long lens, you know exactly why.

The only short coming is the much lamented focus breathing you can read about on the internet. Not an issue for a real photographer. I'm not sure what people expect from the laws of physics. Suffice to say a lens that weighs as little as a mouse, instantly focuses down to foot (losing no zoom in the process), is totally water and dust proof, has 8 stops worth of flawless VR built in, is insanely sharp wide open and has perfect contrast, color rendition and no distortion, all the while costing under a thousand dollars, will never exist. Something has to give. If that's what you're waiting out for, I wish you luck in all your affairs.

If you need this lens, and you know who you are, don't wait. Buy it! You won't regret it.
