I use my gear mainly for professional work, but I also still have fun with personal photography projects too. This Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VRII lens when attached to my Nikon D600 is an excellent combination for capturing everything from the action at a sporting event to beautiful images of a family against the sunset or a young couple in love! The versatility of the f/2.8 aperture in low light situations, like at a High School Football game, allows for excellent results with sharpness and clarity that I was not able to achieve with my other zoom lenses (70-300 f/3.5-5.6) on this camera! I also ordered the Nikon D750 and received a substantial discount that made the purchase of these two amazing pieces of equipment that much sweeter! The staff at B&H were excellent to work with - knowledgeable and service oriented! The fast and free delivery was an extra bonus that I was not expecting! So, thank you B&H for helping to make my transaction excellent while helping me to save a substantial amount of money!

The three stars are a warning. This is the most agonizing lens I have ever owned. First, the good news. The image quality is superb. The autofocus on my D700 is dead on perfect. Color, contrast, and bokeh are all outstanding, with good sharpness at 2.8. The lens is a joy to use, quick and responsive, and the updated VR is excellent. I've made great shots handheld at 1/15 sec. which I never thought would be possible. This is a great improvement over the older version. Now the bad news. If you want tight head shots, forget it. Nikon has played a clever trick on us. At a working distance of 6 feet with the lens set at 200mm, the actual focal length is shortened to about 140mm. At 10 feet, its about 160mm. You can look it up, this information is all over the internet. You have to set focus over 35 feet away to get a true focal length of 200mm. By contrast, the older version of this lens only shortens to about 198mm. You have to decide for yourself whether or not this is a deal breaker for you. More importantly, my current copy is the third one I tried. I had to return two others to get one that worked right. The others produced images with noticeable blur along the right edge, and had a hot spot in the center (thank Lloyd Chambers for bringing this to everyone's attention). [...] In the end, I decided to keep the lens for its versatile zoom range. Besides, Nikon users just don't have any other options without going to third party lenses. I suggest that anyone considering this lens test it rigorously before accepting it.

Nice lens

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

I am happy with the quickness of the automatic focus response. I also like the color and sharpness. After taking over one thousand track pictures the first week, In all weather conditions, and another hundred indoor in poor lighting, I am satisfied with the lens and happy to add it to my collection.
The motion during zooming in and out is a little harder to position than I like. However, I am happy with the lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

Takes the place of several single-mm lenses. Ergonomically great. Very excellent pictures. VR is amazingly good. Works with my D810 and my D5100. Good in low light. Heavy, but with all the glass that was expected.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

I mainly shoot fast primes on my D810. After debating if I should get a zoom (I'm a pixel peeper) I finally pulled the trigger. Let me tell you this, This pro lens will outlast any camera bodies and will serve you for many many years. The images I get from this pro lens is just as sharp as my fast primes. It is so good it's unbelievable. This is a lot of $$$ but it is worth every hard earned penny I make. You should save up and BUY IT! This is coming from a miser. Last but not the least, B&H is the BEST period.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

I don't know what I can say that hasn't been said in reviews here. This is the best 70-200 you can get (if you need f/2.8) for Nikon. There's a reason this is the flagship model.

Build quality is excellent. It's well weather-sealed, and even though I personally would never willingly do it, I wouldn't be scared if I got caught in the rain with this without protection. Light rain is no problem, I can vouch for that. It internally zooms, so you don't have an extending zoom at all. The lens hood attaches with a lock on it, so there's no chance of it accidentally turning or coming off. The zoom and focus rings turn smooth and are just the right resistance. It's a bit heavy, which is to be expected, but I have no problem hand-holding it for hours. The tripod ring does not come off, which is my only gripe, but the mount comes off the ring, which then has another threaded mount. I normally just keep the foot off the ring and use the ring's mount if I need a monopod. For a tripod, the foot would be beneficial for weight distribution.

Auto-focus speed, oh the AF speed! This is the fastest AF lens I have tried to date. Snaps where you want it fast and precisely. My lens copy focuses spot on, didn't have to fine-tune at all. This is hands-down the best 70-200 f/2.8 when it comes to AF.

Image quality is fantastic. Just the best. The Tamron has been shown to be sharper by just a hair during tests, but I prefer the look of the image overall from the Nikon. Bokeh is more visually pleasing to me, however small of a difference it may be. It's sharp throughout the range, even at f/2.8, and I don't really have to worry about keeping the f-stop higher to get sharp photos.

I have nothing bad to say about this lens. If you need this range, you need this lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

I bought the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 vrii to replace my trusty old Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 D lens after it started to fail. I knew the 70-200 was going to be my next one because I'd rented it a number of times and loved it!

This lens is deadly-sharp! Even wide open it's a force to be reckoned with. The focus is fast, quiet and sure. And it's built like a brick you-know-what. Not quite tank-like like the 80-200 in it's metal clad skin, but close enough that I'm not worried about it taking knocks from the many bar mitzvahs, weddings and events it will carry me through over the next few years. I shoot a lot, and my gear gets used very well. It also focuses about a foot closer than my old lens, which is 12" I really needed. If you've ever been on the dance floor of a wedding reception trying to make art with fast action and a long lens, you know exactly why.

The only short coming is the much lamented focus breathing you can read about on the internet. Not an issue for a real photographer. I'm not sure what people expect from the laws of physics. Suffice to say a lens that weighs as little as a mouse, instantly focuses down to foot (losing no zoom in the process), is totally water and dust proof, has 8 stops worth of flawless VR built in, is insanely sharp wide open and has perfect contrast, color rendition and no distortion, all the while costing under a thousand dollars, will never exist. Something has to give. If that's what you're waiting out for, I wish you luck in all your affairs.

If you need this lens, and you know who you are, don't wait. Buy it! You won't regret it.

This lens I have wanted for years and years, but was very costly when jobs were few in between,so I found a used 80-200 2.8,very good lens but shooting brides in homes and small hotel rooms,at the 80mm setting on most weddings you cant get back enough to compose how you may want, well I have finally took the plunge for the 70-200 2.8 VR11 and I am loving it wish I had long ago,I am an event photographer and this lens is allowing me to get the shot I want in the camera much more easily and very nice podium shots the difference between 70mm and 80mm may not seem to be much, however, with weddings its a whole new world I have shot hundreds of weddings without this lens, now I know what I have been searching for. This lens is fantastic, images are great, focusing has been quick and on the money I just love it.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

I have owned this lens for over 2 years now. At first on a DX body, then later I upgraded to FX. The lens is fantastic for sports, low light dancing, and portraiture.

Pros - The lens is incredibly sharp, even wide open at all focal lengths, essentially prime quality. Colours are vivid and contrasty. AF snaps to focus more or less instantly, and rarely hunts even in low light. Build quality is pro standard, second to none. Bokeh in the out of focus areas is gorgeous. The vibration reduction works very well. Its possible to get sharp pictures at under 1/10th sec.

Cons - Weight. This thing is HEAVY. I also own the 24-70 2.8G, which although not a light lens, is my go-to walk-around lens, and I have no issues carrying around that lens on my camera all day. This lens however is a different kettle of fish. Great in small doses, but when I've been shooting dance performances with it in the past, my hands have started to cramp after holding this lens up for extended amounts of time - A Black Rapid strap is a great accompaniment to this lens if you are walking around with it a lot and for perhaps a monopod for extended shooting.

There is also an issue with Focus breathing. At close focusing distances the focal length reduces to approximately 60-135mm. For some this is a big issue. For me not so much. As I tend to use for portraiture, being able to fit more into the frame in confined spaces is actually a plus. But for this reason it's certainly not good as a macro lens.

All in all a great lens that I would highly recommend. But for me its certainly more of a specialist lens, rather than one that would be on my camera all the time! 5 Stars.

After wish-listing this lens for the past several years, I'm thrilled to now have this lens on my camera. I may never remove it. It's everything I hoped it would be. It's a fast, smooth, glorious piece of glass. Reviews don't lie and this lens is divine.

The difference between being a pro and or just showing up. Yes there are cheaper versions- you pay to play. This was an upgrade purchase from V1 that was lighter and easier to hold honestly. V2 is faster, sharper and nano glass is just amazing if you know how to tweak the images out of a right out of a pro body.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

I do portrait and wedding photography and this lens is a dream. I checked out other budget lenses by Sigma and Tamron, thankfully Nikon put this guy on sale so I the price gap was not as large compared to the Tarmon 70-200 2.8 VC. After shooting this and the other lenses I can say even at full price this lens is worth every penny. The hit rate for focus is astounding even with moving children on my D800.

This is quickly becoming my favorite lens in my bag. I love it and cannot recommend it enough.

My only complaint is that the lens can get heavy on a full day of shooting. I highly recommend using a modified strap instead of the stock Nikon straps on your cameras, one that will let you swing the camera body over your shoulder to distribute the weight more evenly. Otherwise your neck or arms will hurt near the end of a 10 hour day.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

Great lens. I had heard so many raving reviews about this lens that I was a little skeptical when I got it. But sure enough, I tested two of them and they were both great. I also tested them against my Sigma 150mm 2.8 and there was no contest--the Nikkor destroyed my Sigma prime.

The VR is also fabulous and gives you at least two stops of stability.
