I recently did a test comparing all the fine art papers from Hahnemühle, Canson, Epson, Moab and Museo — over fifty different papers in total. I'm not going to claim that my tests are definitive or even objective. My goal was finding the best paper for printing my work. In the category of Smooth Matte papers (which I use the most), Hot Press Bright beat Canson Infinity Rag Photograpique by a hair, probably because this paper has OBAs (optical brightening agents). (Canson wins against Hot Press Natural but only he narrowest of margins).

There is a lot of FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) in the market about OBAs and their impact on image longivity. You'll often hear something like "… this paper has no OBA, which are known to (negatively) impact image longivity". While this may be true in general, it's not always true. Look at the Wilhelm Research ratings for Espon papers with UltraChrome K3 Pigment inks (Pro 3880, etc). When a print is displayed under UV filtered glass, Epson has two papers that are rated in excess of 200 years (UPPP Luster and Watercolor Radiant White) - both of which use OBAs.

On to the paper: very good sharpness, good reds (always a problem for matte papers), exceptional blacks (another problem area) and very good overall contrast. You're not going to get the kind of Dmax that you would with a glossy paper, but it's pretty close. At 330 gsm, it's one of the heaviest matte papers out there, which for me is a good thing.

I would definitely recommend using the front feeder to print on this paper so that you get a straight paper path. In my testing, 330+ gms papers are prone to ink problems at the end of the print if you send them through the rear feeder.

I purchased Epson Hot Press Bright White after reading glowing reviews and watching promotional videos that praised it's d-max and claimed rich, deep blacks and a gamut close to Premium Luster. But in testing this paper on an Epson 3880 printer with Epson profiles, I found poor performance in shadows, and no match to Premium Luster.Initial tests showed "muddy" shadows and a general foggy image. More detailed test with step wedge images showed that the paper is unable to handle RGB values below the 30 to 40 range. The paper clips significantly below this range, and shadow detail is lost. The paper performs well on medium to high key images, but is unsuitable for images with significant low key shadows. Strangely, the Epson promotional videos by famous photographers contain samples of some very low key images. Don't be misled by them, as I was.I documented my experience here[@]

I've been quite impressed with how well color saturation is with Hot Press Bright Smooth Matte. Magenta and earth tone colors from photos of the Grand Canyon on a cloudy day are brilliant. Will continue to use this paper and see how well it does with other colors and lighting situations. Handle paper on its edges or wear gloves to keep finger prints off photo.

I print abstract photos on an Epson 3880 printer. I have tried several other papers and I find that the overall look of the Hot Press Bright looks fantastic for what I am trying to do. My photos go from stright B & W to very saturated colors and it handles them all very nicely. Good blacks, bright colors and even though it has a matt finish everything still pops and looks sharp. Also, the paper is thick enough so that you can handle it easily. I am also using the 8" x 10" cut of this paper and like it as well.

Best for images with vivid color in clean light. It's not so "white" that skin tones get weird. It's good for stark BW images too. I soft proof in Lightroom and Photoshop with the Epson provided profiles. I get the most "wow" factor from people when I print the right image on this paper.

This is the paper i used for all gallery and editioned prints. Good gray scale range. I wish it was a little smoother but still the best I have found. Two negitives. Print surface is very easy to damage, especially fresh out the print, not wise to stack prints trying. I blow down sheets before I print but I have had issues with flecks coming off the paper with my 4900. Hard to explain and its rare but happens.

Considering a new paper for fine art photography prints, I took the advice of a photographer friend. The first time I printed on the paper I loved it. The thickness of the paper is good. The print quality is exceptional. Colors were vivid. Sepia prints were gorgeous. The paper showed details in the image much better than previous papers. Very satisfied.

We use hot press for many of our fine art prints. Any image where the texture of cold press would be a problem will be printed on hot press bright or natural. These papers are heavy and have real substance to them. They have nice smooth surfaces and show the color very well.

Comments about Epson Hot Press Bright Smooth Matte Paper (17 x 22", 25 Sheets):

Hot press bright has a great tonal range and a smooth surface while still a fine art - as opposed to photograhic - paper. No paper is 5 stars there is always more to see than what's in a print
