I got the Archos 5 32gb for Christmas with much anticipation. I had owned an archos 504 a few years back and enjoyed that, and thought the new one would be just as nice. It looks great, is incredibly light, and can easily fit in your pocket, but I would recommend a case. Out of the box it worked fine. I downloaded apps from android very quickly, and internet worked for a while. This was one of my problems. I was able to go onto the internet, facebook, email, and such, for about 3 minutes before the internet cut out. I would have to restart the archos just to have the same problem happen. The other problem: Since this is the 32 gb system, I was able to add a micro sd card, which I did. I moved the photos from the system onto the card and a couple movies. This caused another problem, however. When I would try to enter the internal storage (as it is called on the archos), it would say the library is updating due to the card. I would then be sent back to the home screen, and not allowed to view my music, videos, etc. I would have to go through the file manager section to play music of view anything. (If you have owned an archos before, then you would know that there are two sections: the file manager, where you can move files around and see everything on the archos, and the internal storage section, which is set up like any other mp3 player and shows music by artist, song, etc.) Once I removed the card, however, it would go back to working normally. I then called archos about the problem. They said that the internet wouldn't work probably because of the wireless antenna. They said the other problem was just random, and that I should get a replacement from place of purchase (B & H photo). So I have a replacement coming and hopefully that one will not have problems. Overall, yes I would go through all this trouble again. The video quality without the HD plug-in is un-matched and incredible. The FM transmitter is not perfect, and the GPS free trial did not work because of the internet, so I am anxious to try that. The applications are great, and music playback is great, as I can go back to the home screen and mutli-task while still listening. The other thing I noticed is the battery life is great with low screen brightness, but not so great when watching movies on full brightness, obviously.

I've tried it for two weeks. The hardware is a beauty. The screen is really sharp. Touchscreen is OK.
The only thing that makes this device pretty much useless is all the bugs they have in the software. Even after the updated version of software that came out while I had the device on hand.
Between lockups and connectivity issues the device becomes nearly useless.
I had mixed feelings when I returned my device but I think that was the right decision to make.
I will give it a try again if Archos gets serious about fixing the software.

Takes time to tune to proper functioning mode. Disappointment is the absence of the real Android Market. Good audio/video quality.

Comments about ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet (Black):

The Archos 5IT is a great little piece of kit which met my expectations and then some. It works well as a greener alternative to booting up a power-hungry computer just to surf the net. Opera browser works fairly well but unfortunately it only has support for Flash 9 while these days sites require version 10 support...especially Youtube, though there is a alternative method to playback Youtube videos. Archos has indicated that they are working on a Android 2.2(FroYo)firmware update which will in turn update Flash to version 10. Android apps may not out number Apple's but the ones which are available do what they are programed to do... best of all, it's usually free!!! The video and audio playback is great, especially since it has native support for a plethora of file formats which will save many from having to waste time an effort trans-coding video/audio which may cost quality in the end result. Something to be aware of is that some of the HD video playback capabilities are restricted until they are unlocked with a plug-in pack which cost about 30$US for a one-time activation fee, which is a bit too much in my opinion, although I'm sure it has to do with licensing of those HD formats. Still, for what the Archos 5 can do, I feel it's a better choice over the overly priced Apple i-pod, which does not have nearly as much exotic native video/audio format support. Android runs fairly well/stable on the Archos 5. I've read complaints about crashing/freezing which I never had happen as of now. Most likely those users were probably asking too much from their little device. Android users have to understand the limits of the multi-tasking capabilities of this operating system.

Am having fun using my archos 5. In spite some of the negative reviews some buyers give, once u download & install the latest firmware on the archos 5, you will find that many of the bugs or glitches on the device is corrected. Connection to the wireless internet is quick and seemless, webpage loading on the browser is faster than some pc/notebook pc, the video play back is amazing not to mention the wonderful 5" screen to view them on all in a lite weight slim/sleek design. I take this thing everywhere I go.

Comments about ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet (Black):

I wish I could remember who first directed me to the Archos 5 Internet Tablet so I could send them a thank-you card. I really love this device. Before I bought my Archos 5 IT, I carried around both a PDA (HP iPaq) and an MP3 player (RCA Lyra) everywhere I went. Now I just carry the Archos. Don't get me wrong, both the iPaq and the Lyra were adequate devices a few years ago, but now my music collection far exceeds the capacity of the Lyra's 4 Gig storage and the iPaq just won't connect to access points that use WPA security.I was planning a business trip recently and I decided I wanted something newer and better to keep me entertained while I was away from home. The Archos 5 IT was just the thing I needed. I ordered the 32 Gig model from B&H and a few days later it was in my hands. One of the first things I did was load the latest firmware (good advice for any modern piece of electronic equipment), followed by several gigs of music and several movies. One of the movies I loaded wouldn't play because I needed the HD Cinema plug-in but the rest played perfectly. The guy in the seat beside me on my flight was obviously envious; he had an iPod Touch and its small screen and low resolution just didn't compare to the Archos.Listening to music on the Archos 5 IT is great. I have a mixture of MP3, WAV and AAC files and the Archos played each format flawlessly. The sound quality is as good or better than any MP3 player I've owned and the volume from the supplied ear buds is more than adequate for me.WiFi can be spotty at times but I have the same problem with my iPaq. When I get a good, strong connection the Archos works great. Although the screen may seem a bit small for web browsing, you can easily zoom in to make pages easier to read. The only difficulty I had with Internet browsing is that one of the locations I was at required me to set a proxy. The built-in browser didn't seem to allow the setting of a proxy so that night at the hotel I downloaded the Dolphin browser, which did. (I should give credit to the folks over at[@]who set me in the right direction.)The GPS is a little slow to lock and I'm not very impressed with the n-Drive GPS software. Perhaps when I have time I'll look into other GPS software options. If you really need a good GPS, I'd suggest you buy a stand-alone unit instead of the Archos. The Archos GPS is handy but I wouldn't want to depend on it. I haven't tried the FM radio yet but I plan to soon.I tried using the Bluetooth tethering and it seems to work just fine. I don't have a data plan on my phone so I couldn't try using tethering to access the Internet, but I was able to use an app called Bluetooth File Browser to access files on my phone. It worked great and now I can easily load ringtones and download pictures from my phone's camera. Are there any downsides? Of course. The battery doesn't last quite as long as I would like but I have the same problem with my iPaq and Lyra. It would be nice to be able to go several days without charging like I do with my phone. Lowering the screen brightness helps a lot as well as powering the Archos completely off when it is not being used instead of just going to stand-by or deep-sleep or whatever they call it. The touch screen takes a bit of getting used to but the more I work with it the more familiar it becomes. I prefer to use a stylus because of my large fingers and that seems to help a bit. Also, the screen looks like it could be easily scratched so I'm investing in a screen protector ASAP and perhaps a protective carrying case as well.All-in-all, I'm very pleased with my purchase and I'm looking forward to my next trip with my Archos 5 IT in my pocket. I should also note that I'm posting this review from my Archos, it's so much fun I just can't seem to put it down.
