This is a truly great lens in most respects, but it does have some faults. The resolution and the bokeh this lens produces are outstanding and place this lens among the very best macro lenses out there. Actually, it is a better macro lens than all other 100mm offerings, except the Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar, and it is a better lens in many respects than the Zeiss. The biggest reason I didn't buy the Zeiss was the Zeiss isn't a true 1:1 macro lens (it's only 1:2), and the Zeiss doesn't have any AF or IS at all, which were limitations that were not suitable for my purposes (butterfly photography, where you don't have all day to focus manually, plus the hand-movement of doing so often startles the subject). However, the flipside to this is the fact the Canon's ability to manual focus (when critical MF is called for) is a joke compared to the Zeiss. In real numbers, you can focus from closeup to infinity with a mere 180 degree turn of the wrist with the Canon, while it takes you about 720 degrees of rotation to go from zero to infinity focusing the Zeiss. In other words, the Zeiss is 4x more precise in the manual focus department than the Canon, and it just feels like a much higher-quality instrument in this regard also. Both the Zeiss and the Canon take absolutely superb-quality images, and both produce superb-quality bokeh (out-of-focus background blur), both of which are key elements to macrophotography. Thus, if you're deciding on a macro lens for yourself, and want the very best, then your decision will be between this EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens by Canon or the 100mm f/2.0 Makro Planar by Zeiss. If you're serious about the best 100mm macro lens for your Canon body, it's going to be a choice between these two. The Tamrons and the Sigmas don't even come close. In order to decide which of these two lenses is best for you, you will need to question your own motives for getting a macro lens. If you always use a tripod, and if your subjects don't require true 1:1 magnification (e.g., portrait), and if your usual subjects stand still long enough for you to get absolutely perfect focus (and if your budget permits a ~$2000 lens), the Zeiss would be the clear choice. However, if you are out in the field alot, and if you shoot hand-held alot (and thus could use the Image Stabilization), and if you want to get true 1:1 magnification, and/or if many of your live-capture opportunities will be fleeting and so you need a fast auto-focus to capture a tiny creature while there's time (rather than a slow and deliberate manual focus that might take too long before the opportunity is gone), then I would get the Canon, which is what I personally did.As an owner of this Canon L lens, I love it for what it does: which is produce crystal-clear images and possibly the best bokeh I have ever seen out of any lens of any kind (even better than the Zeiss). But I would be lying if I said I still don't have it in my head to go ahead and get the Zeiss Makro Planar also, for what *it* does, which is offer absolutely precise manual focus. Because the biggest drawback to this Canon is its pitiful manual focus. If you move your hand, even a little bit, as you attempt to focus, it produces a dramatic difference because of the fact it only takes a 180-degree rotation to go from 1:1 to infinity, which again is a joke. The bottom line is the rotational elements for this Canon lens were made with auto-focusing as its main goal, and that's fine when you need it. But there are often some critical moments in macro-photography that require the super-precise focusing efforts, and 720-degree rotation capability of the Zeiss precision is simply superior to the Canon in this regard. But other than that, the Canon lens is a truly great lens in MOST of the key elements to macrophotography ... and the image-quality, the color rendition, and super-creamy bokeh it produces truly are top-notch ... and overall I am very happy with my desicion to have purchased it.Anyway, for what it's worth, that is my $0.02 ...Hope this helps,

Pros - Sharp images, IS gives you a fighting chance w/o a tripod-just don't lean forward or back.
Cons - Even w/range adjustments, the AF does too much traveling. It startled me when it made a loud staggering/grinding noise like you hear when shifting worn gears on a truck. I almost dropped the camera. I shoot w/a 40D and had plenty of light. I must have received a bad copy.
This is my 3rd L-series lens. The light weight is great, but I expected more. I take away one star for the AF issue, and one star for the Tripod Mount Ring gouging ($190 - Really?)

Best Macro Lens in the World

By Azan

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens:

I have bin using this lens for years and I can tell you it's a two in one lens you can use it for both portrait or macro for real life size photos. The plastic body that people talk about is not a cheep plastic that will break so easy in fact your glass would break before the plastic does and canon made sure that it will hold up against the rough. Don't believe people that complain about things without trying them to there maximum advantage. The plastics body this lens have saves weight that don't mean it's not good. Listen, my lens took a smashing to the concrete head on and not a thing broke or got scratched everything works great like nothing never happen. Canon makes quality products and I know this first hand this is the reason why L Glass cost so much, it's quality your paying for. I trust canon to always give me the peace of mind when I buy top lenses from them. So for the people that is thinking twice about the plastic body, loose the thought just get this gem of quality and shoot beautiful images. It will last you a life time and yes this lens does have weather sealing.

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens:

I owned the Canon 100mm f/2.8 Non-L/Non-IS lens for 6 years and loved that lens. I really needed the IS in so many situations since I do not use a tripod very often. So I sold my Non-IS to be able to purchase this lens and I was so happy I did. Wow! Such a wonderful lens. The image quality is outstanding!!!!

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens:

This is a beautiful lens. Capable of true macro and great for portrait/scenic shots as well. Full time manual focus allows you to get the shot if AF is having trouble. Was shooting with extension tubes on my 70-200mm and was happy with those results but this 100mm macro lens is far superior. I know the plastic body is a concern for some but it keeps the weight down and since I do not abuse any of my purchases, especially camera related purchases, the plastic body is fine for me. It is still well built and doesn't feel weak or flimsy at all.

Dimensionally short and light enough to carry on hikes with the versatility of 100mm (film or full format sensor) or 160mm (APS-Cropped) and Macro for that intriguing item or miniature life, insect or vegetation.

Macro is my favorite type of photography and Canon's 100mm macro lens really delivers. Nice and fast (2.8), and super-sharp accurate focus - both of which are crucial for macro shots. Have used it as well for some casual portraits and I think it's now my favorite portrait lens. If you're serious about macro photography, skip the macro "setting" on other lenses - invest in a macro lens and unlock a whole new world of detail.

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens:

I have been a professional photographer for 25 years, specializing in product photography. Being approached to photograph jewelry, I was not about to turn down business in today's market. I read all the reviews and tutorials, and settled upon Canon's EF25 II Extension tube to be used with my Canon 90 T/S lens to take advantage of the f-32 capability and the increased depth of field this f-stop provides. Not having any jewelry business, I was not ready to invest the money in a macro lens.

I was never happy with the contrast and definition shooting white gold against white, trying everything from constant lights, timed exposures, and strobe lights with a tent. The crisp tack sharp lines were just not there. I tried several of my other L glass lenses as well using my extension tube.

I rented the 100 mm Macro to try it out, and I was amazed at the difference. I am now able to blow up my images to 30" x 40" (with the help of Photoshop) for display with absolute clarity. I know medium format cameras are famous for this, but I do not have the business to invest $50K+ in an other camera system for just one purpose.

With this lens, I am now able to provide large images, and the actual images are flawless out of the camera. My client is happy, and now I feel confident to pursue additional customers. All I care about are the results, which are excellent.

I purchased this lens mainly for its macro feature. I had to make a decision between the L and non-L, and fortunately I chose the L. The image stabilizer feature is especially useful for the macro, since I am a video shooter, I don't always use a tripod, and the IS does help a lot. As a lot of people mentioned, the focus does generate some sound, might cause a slight problem if you record sound via the internal mic..however, since most pro shooter uses external mic, shouldn't be a big issue..

This lens is so far durable and the clarity is excellent even zooming in several times.

i've just began close-up photography and after reading many lens reviews a purchased this wonderful lens. auto focus is very fast and manual focus is also fast and accurate. the lens is light and i can even hand hold it on some small subjects.

I bought this lens just before Christmas, specifically for macro photography. I am very pleased with its performance. It also makes a great portrait lens. When the image stabilizer is turned on, the lens makes some noise, but I can live with it.

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens:

I like the size, weight, and picture quality. This is not a heavy lens. My only concern is the AF ... it can travel a lot, depending on the (side of the lens) focus range setting. I have to remember to set it according to estimated distance of the object I am shooting to ensure the quickest focusing ,.. this took some "getting used to". Now, that I am trained, it works quite well for me. Still, it doesn't always seem to focus as quickly as my "70-200" or my "24-70" - both Canon L-series.
