If you want a gel holder for your shoe-mount flash, I'm afraid there aren't many options.

The LumiQuest holder does it's job adequately. I mounts on the flash and allows you to slide gels (the size that come in the Strobist Collection) into the transparent window in front of the flash. There's also a second pocket that allows storage of extra gels.

I have two complaints; first, it's a little tight on my Metz 48AF, which means the window bends, making it a pain to slip gels in. The other flaw is the bendable window itself. I feel a window made of a harder material would make changing gels easier.

All that said, I'm just starting out using gels and I'll probably need to change them a lot less as I start picking the right one more often. I just wish there was a faster way to swap gels.

I've always just cut larger pieces of gels and put velcro on the ends to quickly attach them to my flashes, problem was a place to store them afterwords and quickly get to them while keeping them in good condition. So I bought this to solve that problem. The storage is handy but the whole unit is too stiff and has a hard time folding around your flash without putting too much pressure on the velcro. You have to remove one end to put a gel in as the two pieces of clear plastic stick to each other. I'll try and modify mine by cutting some of the area where the clear connects to the black to help it bend but I'd expect that these sorts of design flaws would be addressed before you produced a product like this. Its not great and I've not actually used it on assignments yet preferring to stick with my old methods.

Can be difficult to move gels

Comments about LumiQuest Compact Gel Holder:

First, this works as you expect. You can store gels in a pouch and then move them to the clear part when you want to use them.
Unfortunately, the pockets are not easy to use. The plastic they used tends to grab onto the gels, which makes inserting them difficult. It also bends a lot when you attach it to your flash, so you have to detach it to change gels out.

But it's cheap and a whole lot easier than rummaging through a bag of gels with velcro on them, you can keep your gels neat and tidy.

Comments about LumiQuest Compact Gel Holder:

I do a lot of location shots (indoor and out) and carry what I need in my backpack. This includes 4 Canon 580 EX II speedlites. I will gel 1-3 speedlites during a shoot. The pocket is convenient to carry about 8 color correction or colored gels and I find it easy to slip a gel into the clear plastic pouch. One speedlite has velcro that I use to secure the holder and the other speedlites I will use a rubber band to attach and secure the holder. Although the holder is not quite flat on the head of the speedlite I don't have any problems or light spillage. The main problem I have encountered with these holders is the weak construction. I have had several of these split apart at the crease. Once this happens you might has well throw it away. I do not have a problem carrying multiply gels in the pouch or slipping a gel into the clear pocket holder. I would have given this a 5 star rating if not for the poor construction.

Comments about LumiQuest Compact Gel Holder:

Has a great case that holds 1 gel and 1 backup.
It has a large range of colors, 3 of each. Comes with Velcro that is top notch and doesn't slip or fall off.

Each gel has a diagram telling the temp (Kelvin) and color/light range.
Great design, great product, superb price!

Comments about LumiQuest Compact Gel Holder:

          Just wonderful!
Each gel comes with a diagram showing
Temperature (Kelvin), and it's scale. 3 of each plus many to select from.
The case the slide into sticks perfect with no fear of falling off or gels sliding out. Has extra slot for a backup.

The case is so well designed that light doesn't slip through (something that I wondered over when firs checking it out).

A great price on top of that.

Will not be using it for my Nikon SB 800

          By Kennebunk Larry

          from Boston

Comments about LumiQuest Compact Gel Holder:

I don't like the design of the holder. It attaches to your flash by using the included velcro strips. I chose not to use the strips because that would have prohibited using the 14mm diffuser attachment that snaps on my Nikon SB 800 and is a valuable accessory. Instead, I tried using elastic bands and the strap which comes with the Better Beamer but neither could keep the holder firmly in place. It is also difficult to insert the very thin gels in to the holder's sleeve.

For the Nikon SB 800, I came up with the best way of attaching the gel and that is to simply place it under the built-in pull out 17 mm diffuser. I cut the gel filter down for a better fit.

          So Far so good

Comments about LumiQuest Compact Gel Holder:

I bought this on a whim and so far it's not bad. I use in on an old Nikon SB-26 which has a more narrow head than the 900+910's do. It fits the older flash well. I use that spare flash for accent lighting or hair/rim light so it's nice to have some gels literally right with it. You can keep commonly used pre-cut gels right ON the strobe unit in the handy little pocket. Right away I placed 5 or 6 in there. The first time out I couldn't dial a flash down far enough and I had an ND filter in the spare gel pocket which made my day.
Others have said it's very difficult to slide gels into the window. This is true if you leave both ends velcro'd on. I just unpeel one side and it gives you more play to slide it in.

I have seen other photographers with their make-shift taping methods they use to hold their gels and then picking them up when their method fails at times. I have to say that I was a little wary of this one but, "Oh, we'll try it", and glad that I did. I don't have to worry, just choose my gel and go about my business the way it should be!

Comments about LumiQuest Compact Gel Holder:

I use this to hold gels to balance flash for the type of ambient light. It does the job and keeps the gels at a nice distance from the flash lens so heat can escape well. The issue I have is when in place it's very difficult to get the gel into the sleeve. It's easier with one side loose from the flash though still not easy.

The issue is the pocket is tight and made of clear plastic (vinyl?). The two side of this pocket stick to each other a bit. So it's a bit of an effort to get the gel all the way in quickly. Time is often of the essence when shooting, no one wants to wait around for the photographer to wrestle with a gel holder.

Also, the little pocket to hold gels for use at another time isn't useful as the gels stick out a lot (perhaps 1/4 length) so you wouldn't store them there or they'd be damaged/lost.

It holds gel filters adequately but it can't be tightened sufficiently to avoid light leaking out the sides. If you're using this flash as a bounce, this means that there will be some direct light spilling on to you subject. Not a deal breaker but not ideal.

The Velcro tape seems to be very strong.

Comments about LumiQuest Compact Gel Holder:

It's a little small on some flash heads but still works well if you take care in strapping it on.

Comments about LumiQuest Compact Gel Holder:

This is used to hold gels onto my flash unit. It is sturdy and mounts easily on the flash unit while still allowing a diffuser to also be mounted. I recommend that you purchase this with the Rosco Strobist 55-Piece Filter Kit.
