I am a semi-professional photographer with more than thirty years of experience and produce fine art prints for clients, books and exhibition. Having worked with traditional darkroom printing methods and, for the past six years, inkjet printing on the Epson Stylus Photo 2200, I have found the Epson Stylus Pro 3880 to be a major advance in fine art printing beyond anything I have experienced to date. It is for me a fine art photographer's printing "dream machine." The colors are crisp, clean and brilliant. Black and white output is nothing less than stunning. It interfaces easily with my Mac and prints come out much faster than I expected. Set up was very easy out of the box but, heeding the warnings about all of the packing tape, I took care to remove all of it. There is a great deal of tape in places least expected in order to secure the machine for shipment and it takes time to remove it. Be very careful to remove all of it before activating the printer or damage could result.

The only difficulty I ran into when setting up the printer was the instructions indicated that once the print cartridges were installed and the printer was powered up, it would begin to automatically prime the print lines. The instructions indicated this would take from 7 to 10 minutes. Although I followed the instructions exactly, my printer did not prime the ink lines. It wasn't until I actually started printing test pages that the ink started to flow and it primed the lines. This was a minor inconvenience that was easily overcome but could be more problematic for someone new to inkjet printers.

To date I have produced over 100 prints since I got the printer a month ago and they are without a doubt the most beautiful prints I have ever created. The output from this printer is far beyond anything I have ever gotten from a commercial photo lab and they surely beat the quality of prints I made in a darkroom.

I am also pleased with the relatively small footprint this printer occupies in my digital lab. I am somewhat limited in available space and to set up a machine capable of printing as large as this one does into such a small space is a feat of technological engineering.

If you are serious about obtaining the finest print quality possible in an inkjet printer whether for exhibition, sales or for personal pleasure, then this is the printer to get. You will not be dissappointed.

This an excellent printer, but my experience with two printers; a 3800 and a 3880 is they have a short life span. I purchased a 3800 (new) and paid for the extra 3yr extended warranty. It was a $[$] printer so I thought it was worth the extra for the extended warranty. After 3yrs and 8 months the printer started dumping 1 inch long by 1/8 in wide black ink blobs, and the Photo Black cart on the LCD read 90% full when the cart was actually empty. Epson support said it needed a new printer head. The cost was the same price a new printer. Because it was now past the extended warranty they would do nothing else for me. (Shouldn't a pro printer at $[$] last more than 3.75 years of moderate use?), I guess not. I then purchased a new 3880, but did not get the extended warranty. After 2 yrs and 2 months, this 3880 started doing the exact same problems as the 3800: dumping 1 inch by 1/8 inch wide black ink blobs and the LCD showed the Photo Black cart at 90% full, when it actually was empty. I spoke with Epson support as well as next person up the line. Epson response: "Because it is out of warranty we will do nothing for you". Despite the fact that this is the 2nd 38xx series printer that had the same problems. Note that Epson will only warranty this printer for a maximum of 3 years - if you purchase the extended warranty, costing several hundred dollars - not cheap. You can not extend the warranty past the 3 years. Given that short time frame you can see that Epson does not expect the 3880 (3800) to last much more than 3 years. If it does, you were lucky. If not, buy a new one or... change to another brand. Given the fact that I had this same problem on two different professional printers - 3800 & 3880. Knowing that these are not $100 disposable printers, but $[$] pro printers; and as a professional customer that had already given Epson several thousand dollars for their printers, and thousands more buying their ink; I had expected Epson Professional division to provide better support and work with me to fix the problems. I had been told that Epson customer support really sucks. Now I must agree with that statement. If you can risk dumping $1200-$1500 every 2 - 3 years on an Epson Pro printer, then you may be happy with the 3880. If you can't, then look at anther brand. I've heard that Canon makes a good pro printer.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Inkjet Printer:

It is good printer with good photo output but its workmanship is very poor and make one feel that it is not a solid product.
I purchased one a couple of month ago. Right out of box, after three or so prints, an error message said that I had the door open and it won't print. I had to keep my hand hard on the side of the printer to prevent the error message appearing. I finally called the customer service and had it exchanged. The second one also has it own problem. I couldn't print more than one copy of a photo with the paper stacked together. Every time, when it printed out one photo, the very flimsy sliding holders to keep the paper in place moved to cause the next piece of paper to jam. Now I have to print one piece of pater at a time. Another problem is that lid of the printer is very touchy. I am afraid to touch the lid because the lid will pop open and it won't print because of that. When it opens, I have to be very carefully to press it down to close it. If not careful it won't close. A third problem, for a few times, when I print, the ink indicates that there is no ink cartridge, and I have to click CONTINUE, it will print.
Above all, I got the image printed but not with a pleasant, enjoyable status of mind. Sometimes I feel nervous while printing, afraid that something might goes wrong to ruin the printing process.
It is a shame that Epson could not make it a more solid product. It is not a new line of product and they should be a ble to do a better job.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Inkjet Printer:

Have been using this machine for about 3 years now with truly fine results and absolutely no problems. Having read other reviews, I am aware that some folks have had clogging issues when the machine is left idle. I often leave this printer for 6 - 8 weeks at a stretch, and have never experienced a problem. Don't know what to tell you...I'm sure the other folks aren't making up stories, and I have taken no special precautions. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I love this thing. Cartridges are pricey, but last quite a while. I invested some time and effort in calibrating my printer and monitor, and in establishing profiles for the papers I use most often (though I am confident that the pre-loaded ones are quite satisfactory). As a result I get printed results that are VERY close to what I see on the monitor. I routinely produce 11 X 14 prints, and more than occasionally 16 X 20, and find the speed to be perfectly acceptable, the quality is at least as good as from a professional lab, perhaps because I will be much more careful than a bored lab printer tech. I was blown away when I first purchased this machine (on recommendation of a B & H salesman, I might add) and after three years I can still think of nothing to complain about. This is usually not hard for me. Considering it's print width, the machine is smaller and lighter than you would expect, replacing cartridges is quick and easy, and Epson's drivers provide fast and simple control of printer settings from the computer mouse/keyboard, so trips to a remote printer are minimized. The only annoyance I can think of is that the switch between blacks can take a while and use a bit of ink, but if you plan your work flow you can keep that to minimum fairly easily.
All told, I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.

    A Love-Hate Relationship

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Inkjet Printer:

I recently received my SECOND Epson 3880 printer. I owned and used my first 3880 for almost 3 years, when the heads totally blew. Hopefully, my personal pros & cons will explain my Love-Hate relationship with this fantastic, but maddening printer. PROS: I consider myself a serious amateur photographer who's used a number of ink-jet printers for many years to primarily output gallery-quality (frame-able prints). When I received my first 3880 a a few years ago, I quickly realized my output had reached a significantly higher level of quality, particularly my B&W prints, which make up about 80% of my output. The prints (both B&W and color) provided by this printer are absolutely exceptional. I should also include comments about Epson's increased quality of print medium. Compared to some of the higher-priced, third-party papers I've used in the past, Epson's latest crop of offerings are not only outstanding and comparable, but often at lower cost.CONS: Where do I start? Recollecting my ancient software OS frustration with Windows ME, the 3880 is the most finicky, prickly piece of computer hardware I've ever used. Every time I use it, I have to deal with some kind of issue. You must use this printer frequently (minimum once a week). If you don't, the print heads and ink lines dry out quickly, and require cleaning and maintenance, which utilizes excessive amounts of ink, as well as exhausting the maintenance cartridges.Errors: From "platen-gap" errors to paper insertion problems with the various sheet feeder options, prepare to spend hours online searching work-arounds for these, and other issues. If it's any consolation, the work-arounds are out there, primarily because so many users have experienced the same problems.Software & Printer config. Epson's printer drivers, utility software and printing configurations are NOT easily intuitive or user-friendly. While capable of providing outstanding prints when properly configured, prepare for considerable experimentation, which will likely require chewing through excessive print and ink media.Bottom Line: The 3880 provides the best print output in its category considering its initial expense, but at a cost of additional time, patience, frustration and $ for ink and media. With no other viable alternative, I purchased a second.

I am so happy with my Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Printer! This is the perfect printer for artists, with exceptional print quality that rivals my art prints from professional companies. Well worth the investment if you are an artist with the intention of selling prints of your art. I recommend anyone looking to buy this printer to order from B&H, as they have excellent customer service and fast delivery. They are my go-to source for paper, too. Very satisfied with my experience with B&H and my Epson printer!

At one time I had my own studio but now am retired and shoot more for enjoyment. Printing my own photos allows me to control more how my image appears. The large ink supply makes it much easiere and economical to print. Not changing ink tanks for Matte or Luster paper is great. Just plan your printing so you're not having the printer flush the lines too much. Setup was easy and the foot print isn't much more than the 2200 It replaces. Being able to use thicker paper is a plus. It's nice not having to rely on a lab now. multiple paths for paper feed is great. So far I have nothing to complain about.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Inkjet Printer:

I'm a digital artist, producing fine art for gallery exhibition. The bulk of my work is done on the Epson Stylus Pro 7900, but I need a smaller desktop printer for smaller work. I had been using an old Epson 2400 and 1900 for everything up to 11x14s, but the cost of the ink was killing me! I could have gone with the cheaper 3000, but the 3880 has 80ml ink cartridges making the cost per ml of ink much cheaper. I've had the printer for a couple of weeks and I couldn't be happier with the results. Only only thing I don't like about the printer is its inability to take watercolor paper through the standard sheet feeder - you must manually feed the sheet through the front or the rear of the unit. I use quite a bit of Epson Cold Press and Hot Press media as well as Moab Entrada, so the manual feeding of the paper is a pain,

Nice Upgrade from older 2400 - prints are not substantially different, which is a good thing, but the larger ink reserves should lower the long term cost. As the unit is fairly new I cannot judge longevity, but my 2400 is still going after many years.

This printer is a replacement for a 3800 model whose head failed after 5 years. I'm hopeful this one will last longer than previous one. Print quality is superb with better definition in the gray areas and shadows (in greyscale mode). B&H service was stellar as usual. Too soon to offer a long term comment.

I produce 3 or more prints every week for photography class. Large ink containers are expensive, but appear to use less ink than my old 2200, so cost of each print is lower.Switching between matte and luster uses a lot of ink, which requires you to batch up prints on either medium. Wish it were otherwise.Door on output tray does not open automatically, which means you can destroy a print if you forget.I love the quality of the prints it produces and the ease of using the rear feed - it is fed vertically and you load it from the front, conserving desk space behind the printer.Looking forward to using 17" media, and learning more about how to produce the best quality this printer is capable of.

Apparently we have reached the point of diminishing returns. The new 3880 printer works great. I guess the question is, how much better can you make it.

I have been thinking of purchasing this amazing tool for years and finally decided to make the plunge. Wow...simply wow. I should have made this decision sooner. Prints on glossy paper look like you could reach into the magic window and pull out the item photographed. I have a picture of a rose that was printed at a lab and then printed at home, the Epson print looks like the water on the petals should just roll off into your hand.I've not had the unit set up long enough to have a real cost figure, but utilizing the ink usage feature combined with the fixed cost of paper, I figure my 11x14 prints save me about $ over lab costs and my 16"x20" prints save me about $. The greater control and ability to fix an exposure issue instantly is a huge plus.

A couple of years ago I had a Canon ipf5000 with roll feed, which was wonderful--until it quit after 3 1/2 years. After a few years without a 17" printer--I always have large size prints in mind when I shoot--and getting frustrated with getting colors just right on my rare wildflower and landscape images, I got this very reasonably priced printer.I use Apple with Mavericks OSX and was prepared for trouble, but having downloaded the software in a few minutes in advance, I loaded the inks, pulled up an image, and printed--just like that. After trying rag, baryta, and glossy papers and getting near perfect color matches, I'm a happy camper. Yes, I miss the roll feed and cut-off of the ipf5000, but on the other hand unlike the ipf5000, this is comparatively small and light enough to take to my distant second home, where I now get to spend months at a time.

I use this product for reproduction of my paintings, illustrations and digital collages. It is the first photo printer I've owned. So very easy to set up and use. Prints look great. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because some of the external parts feel a bit flimsy. However the unit as a whole feels solid. Epson customer support has been terrific which is a bonus for me as a newbie. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone.

Purchased to replace 3800 that went south after 4 yrs.
Has functioned perfectly for the week or so that I've had it.
I think a good idea is to print something at least daily so the nozzles don't become clogged and then a LOT of ink is required to clean them.
In other words, the printer is meant to be used.
