I needed an excellent headphone for tracking in my home studio. I sought recommendations from highly regarded industry professionals and read several online reviews from reputable sources. Based on the information, I decided to purchase the Sennheiser HD 380 Pro.

Firstly, the built quality of this headphone is 'pro-grade'. It is flexible yet extremely durably. This was built to withstand the rigors of the professional music environment. It is also easy to transport in the included travel case.

Secondly, the design of the HD 380 Pro fits my head comfortably. It does not squeeze and can be worn for extended periods without discomfort.

Most importantly, the frequency response of this headphone exceeds the Human-Audible-Spectrum. I am able to hear the distinction among the low, mid and high frequency sounds very well. Though I will not recommend these for mixing, I use them for monitoring effects placement in a mix and when correcting noise, sibilance, and distortion in a signal.

I have an HD650 and an Audio Technia ATH-M50 at home. The former is set up with a DAC and a headphone amp for music listening, the latter is used with a mix station, set up as a backup for nearfields, when I have to work late at night, or when my wife complains.
Now my day job has become so stressful that I need music beyond normal dose of caffeine. At first I brought the HD650. Bad idea, it broadcast so loudly that the whole floor turned against me. My boss ordered that I need to "keep music to myself." The ATH-M50 came in next. It made peace with my coworkers, sounded nice with the bonus of ambient isolation, yet I need to take it off once in a while to relax my sweaty ears.
This is when HD380pro caught my attention. On the surface it's very promising for my case. Closed back should "keep music to myself," Over-the-ear design, similar to HD650, is proven to be more comfortable for extended listening. As added bonus it folds into a flatter case, making it easier to fit into a briefcase. It's priced above ATH-M50 so the sound should be OK - It's a Sennheiser, isn't it?
I bought it and, surprise, it sounded horrible! Granted any comparison with HD650 would be unfair. Against ATH-M50, however, it simply sounded like ear-buds. Mids were so over emphasized that highs were barely audible. I put the unit under a 48-hour break-in, at the same time researched on the web. Other ATH-M50 owners also observed the same, but most put it positively. They said ATH-M50's highs were overkill, HD380pro made it right, and ATH-M50's mids sucked (which I concur comparing with HD650), and HD380pro made female vocal shine...Could break-in do the trick?
Two days later it definitely sounded better. Mids settled a bit and highs came out. If I turned up the volume it actually sounded OK. But under a volume that I felt safe for longevity of my ears ATH-M50 was still a clear winner. What volume could not compensate, was an echo in the 800-1000Hz range, which makes vocals sound like from a tin can.
Am I doing justice to such a highly reviewed product? If my use case is unique, what could it be best for? I suspect it would really work well for DJs. At high volume highs and lows are both boosted and it should sound fabulous. Effect of the echo could also get relief as ambient echoes leak in anyway.
Now for the stars. I knock off one for not fitting my use case of extended listening, and the other for value. It's priced 40% more than the ATH-M50 yet it does not deliver much more IMHO. It's more comfortable and portable, but short on the most important aspect - sound. I understand this could be subjective and I hope people who like its sound don't take offense.
Last but not least. I will always buy from B&H. I have used almost every online shop with a name. No other online retailer comes close to the service they provide. Wish I could visit NY somedays to thank these nice guys in person.

Comments about Sennheiser HD 380 Pro Circumaural Monitoring Headphones:

I use these headphones primarily to record outdoors, and they are a big help in determining just what my microphone is picking up, and for setting proper gain levels ahead of time (if I have the opportunity to do that). They are comfortable, they sound good, and the fact that they fold flat and store in the zippered container is a defnite plus, as it allows me to take them with me without getting them damaged or dirty.

Nice volume, great response, decent price. The carrying case is awesome and very rigid. It has a fairly flat frequency response for fairly inexpensive headphones so they're great for monitoring live events.

Comments about Sennheiser HD 380 Pro Circumaural Monitoring Headphones:

I was disappointed and had to return these. Overly strong mid-treble. Missing mid-bass. These are not flat reference headphones. They have color that excentuates vocals. Ok for tracking, but that's it. Extremely comfortable, just wish they sounded better.

I have had the HD 280 Pro for five years and needed another set, so I thought an upgrade to the HD 380 Pro might be a good choice. First listen was a little different than the HD 280 Pro. I heard a thinner audio, then I realized there was more HD and a flatter reponse that I was hearing. After using them in my studio for a couple weeks, I hear audio I've missed. It's easier to hear all the tracks at once and pick each one out. I know with a higher price I could get A better choice, but these work fine in my small studio.

I prefer over the ear phones and I think these are great. I use them for playing my bass through my Mac. I need phones with great bass response, but not muddy fuzzy response that I've found in some other phones. For my purposes I think these are the best.

First of all, they fit completely over my ears, making them more comfortable than my Sonys. Second, great balanced sound. Third, solid bass without the artificial thump of Beat's type headphones. They fold flat and come in a nice carrying case. The flat case is handy when traveling.I use them for field recording when shooting video and for sound editing. They also work nice on airplanes (although they are not noise cancelling--but that's not what I bought them for).

This is the first pair of 'pro' headphones I've ever owned, but the difference in sound and the ability to hear nuances in the sound is quite amazing. Never going back to the on-ear/in-ear type for critical work.

These are some of the best headphones I've ever used. I've used several Sennheiser and Grado Labs headphones over the years, and the 380 Pros are my favorite. They are extremely comfortable, and have a very accurate sound reproduction, which is great for professional recording, as well as casual listening. These headphones are pretty compact with the folding design and case is a perfect fit. The headphones also do an excellent job at blocking outside noise. I highly recommend these headphones.

The sound is great, they cover the entire ear and do a great job cancelling out unwanted noise. Bought them for our boom operator and his eyes lit up when he put them on. Our producer is hearing impaired and said this specific pair is great for people with hearing aids since it covers the whole ear, so that's a plus as well! Also, the semi-hard case that comes with them allows me to put these into boxes with other gear with confidence that they won't be damaged in transit.

Comments about Sennheiser HD 380 Pro Circumaural Monitoring Headphones:

Yeah, it folds wierd, but it folds flatter than my HD280Pro ever did. Sound isolation is great, clarity and reproduciton accuracy is incredibly good - if you want boom-boom-base, play music that has that on bumpy-junk headsets with too much equalization. These will sound light on base until you get to that track which actually has good mastering and orchestration. Very honest sound reproduction. I've done live sounds for 15 years and bought the HD280Pro the first week they were out. After about 10 years, I've replaced the cable twice, and the pad sets three times. Finally had a driver blow out from a bad headphone amp on a mixer board. This was the perfect upgrade, I would have bought another set of HD280Pro if this model wasn't available. These are much more portable than the HD280Pro, and a bit shorter of a cable which makes it more manageable for portable FLAC/WAV/MP3 playback. I can go 6+ hours and I don't feel the headache I get with other cans, and I don't sweat with these either. Sennheiser did a terrific job with these!!

These headphones are very clear. I am not an audiophile so I don't have a bunch of technical terms to describe them that may or may not mean anything to anyone else. Pros:Very clearVery good sound isolationgood adjustability / fitreasonably pricednice caseCons:Not much bassOversized ear muffs squeeze my jawThe ear muffs are large enough to partially cover my jaw and applies pressure. This is more uncomfortable than I thought it might be, but I also have TMJ. I will say they have excellent sound isolation without a vice like grip. The fit and feel in all other aspects is great. They have a snug fit that keeps them in place without the tight vice feel. I just wish they didn't press on my jaw but that may be a problem unique to people like me with an underlying problem. I noted they lack bass. Some will say they sound great. I am not the best judge of what perfect reproduction is. Frankly, I don't care. I just want it to sound good. I listen to a lot of rock, alternative, some rap and some country. Most of my cars have aftermarket stereo with subs so I like lots of bass. As much as I like bass, I still like clarity and good highs. I don't want it to sound muddy or distorted. I just like a strong punch and to feel the kick drum. These sound good, but could use more bass for my tastes. Two more minor complaints. 1 - I am not a fan of coiled chords because they are so heavy for the usable length. The chord is also not removable. 2 - they don't fold up very compact. The case is nice and I am willing to tolerate the larger space for improved quality. These have a lot of good qualities, I just wish they had more bass and didn't squeeze my jaw. They will probably make most people very happy.

bought the blue cell pcx 450 pads and they are much more comfortable and improve sound. after installing them I do not understand why sennhieser didn't include them with these phones originally.

These phones seem to deliver well below 20 hz and above the advertised 120 or so db. I am very impressed. I you like high quality techno these phones are for you.
