This product works period. My workflow was slow and tedious, having to manual color correct everything because the preset white balance straight from camera never gave me what I felt was perfect white balance. Creating custom color profiles for your camera/lens/strobes are easy.

For flash photography follow the below instructions.

1) Set your cameras white balance to "flash" or daylight if your camera doesn't have an option for flash.

2) Double check your settings to verify you are shooting in RAW file format.

2) Set up your lights in which every style you would like. If you're using 1 light or 10 lights, set up like you normally would.

3) Properly expose for your subject. I personally use a Sekonic light meter for this, but you can take a few test frames and chimp to verify you have proper exposure.

4) Open the X-Rite so it makes a "T" shape, and have the model hold it on the plastic back and date card. DO NOT TOUCH ANY OF THE COLOR SQUARES, OR GREY CARD.

5) Have your subject hold the card on the key light side of their face, this is the closest to the main light source. Make sure it is oriented the correct way with the little icons of the sun and mountain on the upper portion.

6) Be sure the subject holds the X-Rite parallel to the camera.

7) When framing, the X-Right should fill 50% - 75% of the frame. Tip: Don't worry if part of your subjects head or face is cut off, we are trying to capture the X-Rite, not the subject.

8) Take the shot, doubling check to verify the exposure and framing are good. Then have the subject set down the X-Rite and continue on with your shoot as usual.

POST PRODUCTION PROCESS
------------------------

1) Import your photos into Lightroom

2) Bring up the photo with the X-Rite in the develop tab.

3) Go to File and select Export.

4) Under the left side of the window below the title that says "Presets" select X-Rite Presets, then select "ColorChecker Passport".

5)Give your custom profile DNG a name, make sure to include subject name, camera body used, lens used, and type of light IE: flash, sunlight, shade.

6)Select "Export". Lightroom and X-Rite will find the color checker passport to create a custom profile. When it is finished you MUST restart Lightroom.

7) After you've restarted Lightroom, Bring up the photo of the X-Rite in the Develop tab again. Then scroll through the setting options on the right hand side until you see "Camera Calibration".

Under Camera Calibration, select the drop down arrows next to where it says profile. You will find your newly created color profile at the bottom of this list. Select it and watch as the colors magically shift and come to life.

8) Now to correct white balance take the white balance eye dropper tool towards the top and select the row squares towards the top of the X-Rite that have the picture of the little sun and person to the left and right. The one to the left is "neutral" and get warmer as you select squares to the right.

Pro Tip: Having a properly calibrated monitor will help with adjusting other settings like "black" , "whites" , "contrast" , etc. It also allows you to view the photo in proper color so you're not fooled into thinking the colors are not where they should be and adjusting for that only to find they look different in your prints.

I would highly recommend this product to anyone wanting to create consistent photos, from the first to last shot. If you want dead on accurate colors this product is for you. It's hard to think I went this long with out it!!

One word of cation, The X-Rite is a little stiff to open, I sure it was designed this way to keep it open, but can be little difficult at first. All in all, this one product that is worth every dollar.

I purchased the x-rite Passport based on the company's claims that it would match colors across different camera models and give me accurate colors overall. While adding more time to my workflow, it has failed on both counts. After much frustration, I decided to conduct my own test. The results showed that not only was the Passport producing inaccurate colors, it was worse than the Adobe Standard profile available in Adobe Camera RAW.Details of the test:Using two Canon DSLR's, I took photos of the Passport in the same light and completed the color correction process for each one, in addition to setting the white balance using the gray square two over from black. I then compared the color values I obtained after correction to the LAB reference values provided on X-rite's website (using a,b and not worrying about L) the colors from the two Canon DSLR's were not even close to each other after calibration and white balance correction, contrary to the claims made by X-Rite.2)As mentioned above, the Adobe Standard Profile produced more accurate results for each camera than X-Rite's Passport. I attempted to use curves in LAB to correct the individual color squares, but doing so resulted in worse overall color. In August, I sent an e-mail over to support with a summary of my findings and the RAW files. The response from customer service was that they were going to conduct their own testing. Now, over a month later, I have not heard anything back from them, and they have ignored my most recent e-mail. I'm very disappointed with their customer service and engineers. They should be open to finding and fixing flaws. Instead, it looks like they are intent on stalling and hoping this issue goes away.Yes, when you use the product and go through the process of camera profile creation, you will find the colors change, but will they be accurate? I have ordered the Datacolor SpyderCheckr SCK100 and will be comparing it with the Passport.

    Comments about X-Rite ColorChecker Passport:

I used the ColorChecker to balance the color of a photo booth setup I used at a wedding. It is not intuitive, but the online tutorial got me up and running easily. I know it can do a lot more after I become more familiar with it. It was very useful especially for someone as "color changed" as I am.

    Comments about X-Rite ColorChecker Passport:

If you're looking to ensure your colors are consistent and standardized amongst gear, light shifts, and other such details that affect the color of your photo (and video, to an extent), this is a serious contender for your attention. It is something you have to remember to use in a shoot anytime you have a significant light change, but if you do, the photos turn out - colorwise - looking patently uniform and correct. It's a good feeling to have. Plugs in to most any adobe workflow, it's almost to instantaneous, because it gives little information as to what is occurring. But it works.Physically, it is stable and feels solid.

                        Comments about X-Rite ColorChecker Passport:

Works great for setting up custom color profiles for each camera in post software. I use this to ensure the colors my camera is capturing are displayed in my software. It has sped up my time in software considerably and I am very pleased with the results. There are plenty of resources out there to help walk you through setting up the custom profiles and even have them automatically applied as you import pictures.
I also tend to take a shot with it in frame for a reference picture depending on the lighting. The white balance card built in works well also.
It's a nice size to keep in your pocket if you're out walking around and I find it to be very durable. The way it opens and has 3 sections allows you to sit it down without the need for any extra device or person to hold it up. If you're doing portraits then the model can just hold it for a test shot.
I am glad I have integrated this into my workflow.

Absolutely great accessory for color sensitive work. Seamlessly integrates into Lightroom workflow, and the created profiles give great results. I would recommend this product to all photographers. I have purchased two of these last year at work, and this time I purchased one for myself. For some reason, it no longer comes with a nice xRite branded lanyard included in the box, which is strange and kind of lame since the price stayed the same :-(

Use before you shoot. Get the WB right the first time. A little difficult to understand the software so there is a learning curve. At least there was for me. Take your time to read and digest the info for you use this product.

I just put this to the test at an event and it helped a great deal. So far I have just used it to get my white balance correct and speed up editing. I look forward to doing some camera calibration.
One thing to be aware of is the small size. It's so small that it can fit in your pants pocket but the gray card is too small to fill the frame when doing a custom white balance.

Used in Photography Studio. Only reason I deducted a star is that it is clumsy to open and not touch the color swatches at time. I works great, but they might be able to come up with a better method opening/closing the case?

                                          Why?
Because you want your pictures to look the best they can with as little time in post as possible.
Color correction and calibration with a dropper. That easy.
IMHO this tool is as (rather more) important than your light meter.

I use it mostly for video production, but it has equally important application in photography as well. ColorChecker Passport is a great compact tool to have on the set to make sure that you wind up with consistent color especially when using more than one camera. For video, I use the color match capability in Davinci Resolve that interacts directly with the colorchecker image from a sample scene of the video. It is not magic and not always perfect, but gives you a good base to launch from. I bought this as a bundle with ColorMunki Display. You need a well calibrated monitor if you are going to get the results you want.

Once you learn how to use this it is great. But everything is online. There is nothing in the box that tells you anything as far as the set-up or how to use it. It isn't difficult now that I know how but I must say I was rather upset after opening the box with excitement only to find that all of the support is online.

Now that I have said that, the passport has really helped with my colors and workflow. After setting up the white balance and getting a custom profile set up my photos look great right out of the camera. I use Lightroom and it is a natural easy workflow.

If I value my subject, then I use this with the shoot. Take only seconds to take out, shoot and put away. It has made my post-production work less of a chore. No more guessing or "ballpark" figuring. I wish this set didn't waste one side panel with a "Belongs to_____, Purchased on______" label. It reminds me of grade school. As if I ever did lose this, guess the odds of another photographer giving this up, yeah right. That's how good this thing is.
