This product works period. My workflow was slow and tedious, having to manual color correct everything because the preset white balance straight from camera never gave me what I felt was perfect white balance. Creating custom color profiles for your camera/lens/strobes are easy.

For flash photography follow the below instructions.

1) Set your cameras white balance to "flash" or daylight if your camera doesn't have an option for flash.

2) Double check your settings to verify you are shooting in RAW file format.

2) Set up your lights in which every style you would like. If you're using 1 light or 10 lights, set up like you normally would.

3) Properly expose for your subject. I personally use a Sekonic light meter for this, but you can take a few test frames and chimp to verify you have proper exposure.

4) Open the X-Rite so it makes a "T" shape, and have the model hold it on the plastic back and date card. DO NOT TOUCH ANY OF THE COLOR SQUARES, OR GREY CARD.

5) Have your subject hold the card on the key light side of their face, this is the closest to the main light source. Make sure it is oriented the correct way with the little icons of the sun and mountain on the upper portion.

6) Be sure the subject holds the X-Rite parallel to the camera.

7) When framing, the X-Right should fill 50% - 75% of the frame. Tip: Don't worry if part of your subjects head or face is cut off, we are trying to capture the X-Rite, not the subject.

8) Take the shot, doubling check to verify the exposure and framing are good. Then have the subject set down the X-Rite and continue on with your shoot as usual.

POST PRODUCTION PROCESS
------------------------

1) Import your photos into Lightroom

2) Bring up the photo with the X-Rite in the develop tab.

3) Go to File and select Export.

4) Under the left side of the window below the title that says "Presets" select X-Rite Presets, then select "ColorChecker Passport".

5)Give your custom profile DNG a name, make sure to include subject name, camera body used, lens used, and type of light IE: flash, sunlight, shade.

6)Select "Export". Lightroom and X-Rite will find the color checker passport to create a custom profile. When it is finished you MUST restart Lightroom.

7) After you've restarted Lightroom, Bring up the photo of the X-Rite in the Develop tab again. Then scroll through the setting options on the right hand side until you see "Camera Calibration".

Under Camera Calibration, select the drop down arrows next to where it says profile. You will find your newly created color profile at the bottom of this list. Select it and watch as the colors magically shift and come to life.

8) Now to correct white balance take the white balance eye dropper tool towards the top and select the row squares towards the top of the X-Rite that have the picture of the little sun and person to the left and right. The one to the left is "neutral" and get warmer as you select squares to the right.

Pro Tip: Having a properly calibrated monitor will help with adjusting other settings like "black" , "whites" , "contrast" , etc. It also allows you to view the photo in proper color so you're not fooled into thinking the colors are not where they should be and adjusting for that only to find they look different in your prints.

I would highly recommend this product to anyone wanting to create consistent photos, from the first to last shot. If you want dead on accurate colors this product is for you. It's hard to think I went this long with out it!!

One word of cation, The X-Rite is a little stiff to open, I sure it was designed this way to keep it open, but can be little difficult at first. All in all, this one product that is worth every dollar.

The color checker passport concept is good but the software needs to be upgraded to work with a high mega-pix camera such as the Canon 5DS/R.

I got this kit to build my own color profiles for my Canon 5DSR. At first I was caught out by the faulty software which cannot handle a 5DSR RAW file and just gave me error messages.

Fortunately I found a work-around on the internet suggesting only to shoot MRAW-files (a compressed RAW-file format) and using the smaller files to build my custom color profiles for Adobe Lightroom.

The color profiles I have built are much, much better than what you get using Adobe Lightroom. This is especially true for the 5DS/R were Adobe has made a very poor job of their color profile.

Buying X-rite is however, something I do not recommended before X-rite fixes the problem with their software.

I also find it strange that X-rite does not mention the limits of their software anywhere. When I contacted support they answered that they were working on a solution, but this is not mentioned anywhere on their site - also not under the "known issues" faq.

While this device certainly doe what it claims, you should be clear on whether that's what you really need.

I have used this device creating single illuminant profiles for bot a Nikon D800e and a Leica M240 M-P. In both cases, the created profile was close enough to the Adobe Standard I was using i Photoshop as to be of little consequence.

If you use AWB in your camera I have nothing to offer as I don't use that function. I make a custom white balance for each photo session and shoot in manual mode.

What I had been expecting was to match the color rendition from the Nikon and the Leica, and that's not what this device does.

The colorchecker passport is more than a tool, it's an investment. Have the correct colors and white balance it is one of the most important aspect of photography. This handy little thing will help you. Doesn't matter how expensive you camera is or what fancy software you're using, most likely what you see on the back of your camera and what you see on your screen don't look like the shoot you took. The passport will fix that.

Works very well in lightroom to set the exact right color balance and tone. Since it only works with Adobe camera profiles, it's less effective with capture one. (There is free software on the internet however to convert the .dcp file that the xrite software produces to a camera profile that can be loaded into Capture One, but so far, not too much luck with that in getting the adjustments correct.)

This is a very handy tool and a "nice-to-have" item while shooting photos or video, but it's really overpriced (and the Passport Video costs even more). The software comes on a CD (who has that anymore??) but can be downloaded from their website (though, not easy to navigate). The software is archaic. It looks old and, quite frankly, is completely useless. It's less than $5 worth of plastic and cardboard, there's no reason this product should sell for more than[$]

This has been invaluable to me. I AM NOT a photographer, but my duties for my job require me to dabble with photography. Some of the problems that I have been having are getting consistency with different shoots (lighting, location)and this was recommended to me as a way to keep my quality consistent across multiple shoots. Using Adobe Camera Raw and this has sped up my workflow and kept my colors the same across multiple shoots. My boss has already commented on how much better my pictures look after purchasing this product. Thanks X-Rite!

Comments about X-Rite ColorChecker Passport Photo:

I take photos under a wide variety of lighting conditions ... some are impossible :) Cameras, these days, do a pretty good job of automatically determining the white balance ... usually. The key word here is "usually".

With this product, you can easily get good white balance every time and do a camera calibration to boot to be sure your colors are right.

There are two pieces: the pack of targets and the software. The pack includes a gray card that you can use like any other gray card. And it includes other two cards that are used for white balance, color calibration, and careful warming and cooling of your image. Take a one photo that includes these two cards and you have the data you need for shooting under that light. Drop that photo into the software and it creates a calibration DNG that you can apply in Adobe Camera Raw or Adobe Lightroom (and others) to make use of that calibration on your images. Neat ! And id does make a difference.

                              Works with RAW images.

Comments about X-Rite ColorChecker Passport Photo:

I not only used it to create a camera profile in my Sekonic light meter, but I also use it in Adobe Lightroom to adjust white balance in portraits and landscape photos. It makes a huge difference in the look of my photographs. I can't imagine how I ever go by without it.
