This was the first lens I bought for my GH2 with the 14-140 kit lens. Initially bought for macro use and it is tack sharp. I shot some newly hatched rare fish fry for a friend's aquarium blog. I was amazed at how sharp the images of the 2mm transparent fish were. I was able to crop and enlarge with my only limitation being the pixel size of my camera sensor. For macro I prefer manual focus or if on a tripod with a still life I like Lumix camera's touch screen focus. The built in image stabilization is a godsend when shooting macro in the field without a tripod. The 90mm full frame equivalent range also make this a versatile portrait lend for either close up headshots, head and shoulder or three quarters. The fast aperture isolates the subject while the Leica designed Panny glass is sharp but has beautiful creamy bokeh. The on/off focus limiting switch makes autofocus snappier when not shooting macro.Great glass. I use it all the time. My one complaint is that for a lens that is so well adapted to shooting macro in the field, I wish it was weatherproofed but to be fair M43 bodies were not when the Leica Elmarit 45 Macro was released. I'll give it 4 stars now in hopes that Panasonic Leica create a pro-build update for the GH3 and the Oly OM-5D.

Macro and portrait photography are the key strengths of this lens. Field work created a bit of a problem by having to constantly be stepping back to frame the image properly.

Macro images offered extremely shallow depth of field and sharp crisp images.

Portrait work provided sharp focus and great clarity. Depth of field issues can occur if not focused manually and utilizing a proper f-stop.

Portraits at 8-feet with an f-stop of 5.6 with the subject 4-feet from the nearest backdrop will provide a clean portrait with diffused background.

Comments about Panasonic Leica DG Macro-Elmarit 45mm f/2.8 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. Lens:

Use this as go to macro on the GH4. Fairly solid build and decent in low light. There may be better more solidly built lenses out there, but focus is critical in macro, so I like that with the GH4, autofocus works, as does the built in stabilizer.

I love the sharpness and lovely rendering this lens produces.

With the Olympus OM-D EM-5 the focus speed is just fine. I found that the key to fast focus with my combo is to select the right size focus box for my subject matter.

Comments about Panasonic Leica DG Macro-Elmarit 45mm f/2.8 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. Lens:

As you might expect, a lens made by Leica is not cheap—either in price or quality. This 45 mm (90 mm equivalent of standard DSLR's) macro lens is micro 4/3 technology used by Olympus, Kodak, and Panasonic in mirrorless cameras. With an adapter it could also be used on 4/3 cameras made by Nikon and Canon. I have used it solely with the Panasonic GH3. The "FOCUS" slide switch should be set to "FULL" for macro work or "LIMIT" for distance use such as landscapes and portraits. The image stabilization (MEGA O.I.S.) is good enough for hand-held macro photos, but for video use of a tripod is probably a must. A few lenses on the market touted as "macro" really aren't. It's not that I don't trust Leica, but I wanted to test magnification for myself, and sure enough it is 1:1 (actually very slightly better). I've used it only for still macro shots and am completely satisfied with this fine lens.

I bought this for my GH2 because I like the 50mm f1.8 on my NEX 5N. They both perform similarly on their respective camera bodies. The NEX/50mm combo is still the better stills camera... similar sharpness but much better low light performance... faster lens with a faster sensor. Both produce exceptional bokeh and similar shallow depth of field if desired. The stabilised macro on the Lumis is a very welcome bonus. The situation is reversed in video mode. The GH2 is sharper, even without the hack. When hacked it's a no contest, with even the 720 60p mode rivalling the Sony's top video resolution. Of course the NEX has been scientifically designed to overheat and spoil both your reputation and any shoot after about 10 minutes whilst the GH2 keeps recording till either the card or the battery runs out... usually about 2 hours. Overall, a very useful lens... bitingly sharp in the centre and adequate at the corners. A bit too expensive and could have a faster aperture but the only game in town if you need a stabilised M4/3 macro lens

The lens works beautifully. It takes sharp macro and mild telephoto pictures. It focuses quickly, but you can defocus the background. The O.I.S. is particularly helpful for this focal length lens. This lens and all of the Leica lenses for Panasonic have exceptionally rich, beautiful color rendition. This may be due to the modern coatings and the aspherical lenses incorporated into their designs.

Great build quality, excellent IQ, love the color rendition. Perfect complement to Lumix 20mm. Expensive, but you won't be disappointed. Very nice bokeh. Was worried that it was only a 2.8, but results are fantastic.

This superlative lens is an absolute joy to use. Rendition is excellent, CA almost nil. Auto-focus acquisition speed is excellent under most circumstances with my E-PL2. Manual focus is tight and controllable.

Comments about Panasonic Leica DG Macro-Elmarit 45mm f/2.8 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. Lens:

I own the Olympus micro 4/3 macro, and then I bought this lens because I needed a macro lens. Having used both, I like the Oly better for everything but macro. The Oly doesn't do macro, so if you need that this is the one to get. If you don't, well the Oly is cheaper, faster, smaller, lighter and not being a macro it focuses faster. The Oly 45 is probably my favourite lens. I shoot Olympus bodies, so the image stabilization built into this lens is of no use to me, but if you use Panasonic bodies, then I guess that would be a plus for this lens.

Don't get me wrong, this is a great macro lens.

Comments about Panasonic Leica DG Macro-Elmarit 45mm f/2.8 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. Lens:

I had been using an old OM set up with adapters on my Pen - learning about Macro shooting. I have been wanting this lens ever since it was introduced. I am loving it. I love the sharpness and the super close focusing ability - I also love playing with the depth of field - this lens creates beautiful bokeh with almost no effort and little light. It's noisy and if you are shooting anything except macro you will want to flip the switch to speed up the focus.

I bought this primarily for a texture project that I have been working on and I am finding that I am doing so much more creatively because of the sharpness of this lens.

Comments about Panasonic Leica DG Macro-Elmarit 45mm f/2.8 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. Lens:

I bought this lens instead of the oly 45mm because it can be used as a macro lens. The biggest draw back of this lens compared to the oly 45 is the smaller aperture and its price.

But my justification for buying this lens is that this lens is a 2-in-1 lens. as it can do both macro and portrait. The f2.8 is not something to be too worried about either.

                                Overall great lens.

Comments about Panasonic Leica DG Macro-Elmarit 45mm f/2.8 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. Lens:

This lens is sharp, small and lightweight. It's a perfect tool for the world of macro discovering. The sharpness is quite enough and even more.
It's sharper than Leica DG 25mm/1.4. The size is almost same, but 45/2.8 is a 5-mm longer. I have the both, but I can't say witch of them I like more.
No any geometry distortion, no CA.
90-mm focal length in equivalence demands more accuracy when shooting.
Autofocus is very fast in conventional focusing range, but a bit slow in macro.
O.I.S. is less helpful in macro.
Seems who was disappointed about the slow autofocus they simply forgot to switch the appropriate AF mode.
It looks cool when coupled with Panasonic GF2.
