I've used it mainly for indoor, moderate light situations. It's worked well, and the vibration control has made a substantial difference in the exposure times needed (2 stops at the least). So far, no problems/concerns (it's a bit noisier focusing than my Canon lenses, but minimally).

I must be doing something wrong. I primarily used this lens (& my Canon 7D) for professional video. However, for the last year I've been using the same camera and lens for much more photography - landscape, portraits, etc.. This lens is fine for video work (manual focus) with the proper lighting (just turn the VC off when shooting video on sticks or a rig). However, for photography the auto focusing ability leaves much to be desired.

For photography situations I have yet to have a crisp clean photo in low light while hand-held (with the Image Stabilization [IS]) on, Auto Focus on. I'm fairly disappointed with the quality of the shots I get in low light with this lens. I'm usually forced to use strobes (flash) in every low light situation because it couldn't focus fast enough or accurately. Even in great lighting situations the lens can take forever to focus and many times it's still slightly out (especially at 50mm) even though the camera (EOS 7D) indicates everything is good. I've used every possible AF option the camera offers (single point AF, 19 point AF, Zone AF, etc.) to make sure. I've actually resorted to using the AF to get me close then switch to manual to tweak. Obviously, that doesn't work when you're in a run-n-gun situation. Something else I've experience frequently (since day one) was a periodic (and random) "Lens Communication Error" with the camera where I need to power cycle the camera to continue using. The lens/camera contacts are clean and there's no specific reason for this except to know that this lens doesn't seem to communicate well with my EOS camera.

I admit though, that I'm not a "professional" photographer and the focus issue "could" be user related, but as a professional filmmaker I think my knowledge and skills in this realm transfer well enough to know how to take a photo properly.

If you're looking for a fast zoom lens on a budget and are shooting video (manual focus), the this lens is a great buy. For me, the jury is stil out on the photography side of things especially for low-light and the auto focus speed/accuracy.

This lens does take clear pictures and is a true F/2.8, however I did return it because of the loud and slow autofocus. I would not buy this lens again and it may be worth it to save a little longer for a better lens.

I use this product for landscape and architectural photography.

The speed of the lens (F/2.8) coupled with the VC is a combination that cannot be ignored.

The focus is crisp and silent and is without a doubt a keeper and I highly recommend this to everyone.

Finally, the images this lens helps to produce are the best with absolute clarity.

I intend to keep this lens indefinitely to use with my 1.6 crop factor camera bodies.

generally good optics but, of the five i purchased in sept of '11, two have suffered what is apparently now a known zoom ring lock-up problem. this is no mere matter of a little extra stiffness. it's stuck, as in won't move all the way through the range of focal lengths.

I use this lens as an all around lens for when I go out. The constant aperture allows me to save time switching lenses, and the zoom range lets me go from wide to close-up, giving me a variety of shots from one location. The sharpness is good all around and the VC compensation helps hand held video be much more stable and usable. Only thing I don't like about it is the weight.

Comments about Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II VC LD Aspherical (IF) Lens for Canon EF:

I use this lens with a canon 60D mostly to produce video. I had the same lens without the VR and now upgraded it to this one.

The VR is very useful for handheld video shooting, specially on the tele side of the lens range.

It is great both for low light conditions and/or to achieve narrow depth of field.

Very sharp, with beautiful color reproduction, a bit on the warm side sometimes though it depends on your camera settings.

It is also nicely build, really strong construction not like other lightweight, plastic molded lenses.

Comments about Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II VC LD Aspherical (IF) Lens for Canon EF:

I bought this lens as an upgrade from the kit canon lens.
And if you are upgrading from the kit lens you will notice how big and heavy it is.
Sharpness-wise, it's pretty sharp. Not extremely sharp though, sharper than the kit lens but not by much. sharp at f2.8 though
Bokeh is not amazing, still pretty good though.
the zoom ring is a little stiff. it's kind of a nuisance when I'm in situations where I need zoom. But it's not a big deal though.
Something interesting about this lens is its image stabilization system. When you half-press the shutter button, you can hear the lens make a sound, which I assume, is the image stabilization working. I also noticed that when this happens I can actually see the image stabilization system work, like my vibrations are reduced, literally, which I find it really interesting. the noise is kind of a nuisance not a great one.
The lens still renders great images, it's contrasty, colors are okay.

You found this lens while looking for the non-VC Tamron 17-50 and you're asking the question "Is it worth the extra $100?" In a word, no.

On it's own this is an average lens. The vibration control does work and if you can take your time to take the picture I think you'll be pleasantly surprised from this lens from time to time with it's performance. Ken Rockwell says it needs a second to lock in the exposure which may be the problem that people are having with the softness of this lens. I have noticed shot wide open this lens does produce softer images that are lower contrast.

The other version of this lens (non-VC) is simply amazing! They aren't even in the same league. My only regret about that lens is that it's not FX.

I'm not a super huge fan of zoom lenses to begin with. You do give up something using them over prime lenses so they are always a matter of convenience. Nikon has it's winners and losers and so does Tamron. This is an ambitious effort on behalf of Tamron, but it does fall short. You should be able to handhold the non VC lens for 1/15th of a second at 17mm.

I highly endorse it's non-VC counterpart. If it worked on the FX bodies in a non-crop mode I would be in heaven!

Comments about Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II VC LD Aspherical (IF) Lens for Canon EF:

OK, let's be clear: for the price, this is a pretty decent lens. You can take good photos with this lens.

Here are some things that have been bugging me for the past 7 months of ownership.

                    * The AF is unreliable and inaccurate. And slow. NOT FOR SPORTS!
                    * The focus ring goes from min to max depth in about 1/4 turn. Nearly impossible to focus manually, or during DSLR Video.
                    * The F-stop might be 2.8, but I'd be interested in seeing the T-stop on the lens. The actual light transmission seems to be much less.
                    * Color saturation is reduced.
                    * Not very sharp.

TL;DR - You get what you pay for.

Comments about Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II VC LD Aspherical (IF) Lens for Canon EF:

I've only used this lens on one occasion. I shot the NASCAR Nationwide Race at Texas Motor Speedway. It was a night race where i needed the aperture values to be low. This lens did incredibly well at capturing action shots of the pit stops during the race.
I had read some reviews saying it was soft at 2.8. It is a bit soft(as are most at 2.8) but useable. However, it is extremely crisp between f/8 and f/16. I never really closed it down much more than that.

Bought this lens by accident; meant to buy the 17-50 non-VC. Can't get a sharp focus with this lens on a 20D body. Maybe I don't know what I'm doing, but I've been disappointed thus far. The Tamron 17-50 XR II Di is an excellent lens.
