Some lenses are simply fun to even look through -- let alone take pictures with. And the Nikon 16mm f2.8D Autofocus is squarely in that category: FUN! Unlike earlier fisheyes that produced circular images, the fullframe version does what its name implies -- it fills the frame, from top to bottom, left to right and the corners. The resulting image is stretched into the corners, and if you want to center to be undistorted, you must hold the camera absolutely level. Used properly, and it takes an FX-format body to take full advantage, it essentially captures just about everything in front of you. I used it the other day to photograph the western horizon criss-crossed with multiple contrails, using it in a newspaper to illustrate the science behind condensation creating ice crystals at high altitudea and to introduce the concept of the adiapatic lapse rate as a function of temperature change. In other uese, you can crowd in closely with a group anc create a sense of intimacy -- hold it at arm's length ofer a group of just-victorius football players and you can feel the excitement. Shoot from the foul line under the basket and the resulting photo is a "6th man's" viewpoint. The Nikon lens is typical of its brand -- sharp, extremely well made and professional quality. But it is small, light and unobtrusive. Depth of field is from inches to infinity at f/11. It's a special use optic -- but when you need a wide field -- it delivers. BTW - It's wider than the 14mm end of the 14-24mm.

I got this lens for a different look of images to go into my portfolio of images... and that different look it offers. If i would have had to do it again I probably would have spent a little more and got the 14-24 f2.8 Personally I like the straight lines over the fisheye's curved lines.

Pros:
small, light and quick focus. unique look and definable fisheye look

Cons:
more of a novelty lens, only a couple of shots per session is what i use this for.

Comments about Nikon Fisheye 16mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens:

Great for instant panoramas. Just came back from photographing at a fabulous scenic overlook which was actually well over 180º. I was nearly able to get the entire view in one shot. With two shots, I could easily get the whole amazing view. Great color and sharpness. I also love the internal filter system. I had never seen anything like that.

A very sharp lens even when used on a D800e. I use a de-fish software for that super wide look. Even then, the corners was very sharp.

Comments about Nikon Fisheye 16mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens:

I hesitated a long time over the price of a lens I thought would have limited use.

Not so! I'll probably use it more than any other one lens. I try to take pictures of all my plantings a few times a year. With this lens I can get all the trees in an area into one picture. One very attractive picture. Everyone who sees what it can do has a project for it, from interiors to site surveys for Environmental Impact Reports. It may be months before I can even think about playing with the fun stuff I saw in the user pictures.

There is no comparison between this lens and the Nikon 17-35 (more than adequate until you take one photo with the fisheye). The quality is so good that I'll crop a photo rather than change lenses in our dusty outdoors. For the test, I used my baseline settings (Shutter priority, 1/160) for handheld. The lens will do much better once I learn to adjust the settings. Some of the bending in the trees is wind, not the lens :)

Comments about Nikon Fisheye 16mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens:

I recently purchased the Fisheye 16mm f/2.8 lens from B&H Photo. Right out of the box, this lens took some very sharp awesome picture's. I took my first picture's near sunset on our beach in Hawaii. The sharpness and color was outstanding. I use a D800 and a D600 camera with this lens for fantastic photo's. The only watch out is to protect the lens from bumps, finger prints etc. as it has no protective filter. Any smudge on the lens will show up big time on the photo.

I bought this lense last month, and found that I could have so much fun with it that I wish I had bought it earlier. In terms of quality, the photos I took with it are sharp at every corner of the photos, produced with mu Nikon D800E.

Sharp lense with the fisheye distortion. Exactly what I was looking for, 180 degree coverage with the fisheye look for special applications. Very pleased, now wish Nikon would make a true 10mm fx lens.

I use the 16mm for better depth of field in landscapes. I performs as expected as long as you understand the purpose of the lens.

After using it for the past two weeks I would by it again based on the current performance.

Great lense for wide panos. Full 180 degree field of view. Only minor correction needed in Photoshop when horizon line is straight. Quick auto focus, tack sharp. There is a learning curve, but well worth the investment. Other methods I have utilized, such as PCE lenses and stitching of multiple, overlaping images have not yielded the same high quality.

Bored with the same run of the mill photos? Then grab yourself one of these and shoot away. Building angles become Picasso like. Ordinary objects can have unique and warped lines. I really have enjoyed owning a fisheye in the past and the optics in this one are superb.

Comments about Nikon Fisheye 16mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens:

Great addition to my camera lens arsenal. I'm currently using the fisheye to photograph behind the scenes at Cheyenne Frontier Days and this lens allows me to get super close to the action!

Comments about Nikon Fisheye 16mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens:

I use this Fisheye 16 mm lens on my Nikon D800E because it has full FX frame capture and it meets that occasional demand when you want to get a 180 degree field of view of a sweeping landscape or a broad swath of dramatic clouds or sky. I love that its frame is rectangular as opposed to circular with other fisheyes. Its depth of field is amazing and allows composing great shots with sharp background objects included in the broad distant landscape. Great also for indoor crowd shots, indoor design photography. If the curving verticals get to be "too much," most popular image-processing software can correct that distortion while retaining the 180 degree field of view. It is not autofocus, but since its depth of field is so extensive, you just don't really need it.

Comments about Nikon Fisheye 16mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens:

As a commercial photographer I find the Nikon fisheye to be a valuable tool especially when photographing interiors and when video graphing. It is not always necessary to correct the curvature but if you need to it's easy to do in Photoshop. This lens is extremely sharp and contrasty with good detail especially for such a wide angle lens. I also use it for photographing people, nature & scenics.
