Truly Excellent!

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

Edge-to-edge sharp... my 'Go-To' for close-up work. ==> See attached photos taken with this lens and Pentax K-5 II (APS-C) dSLR. 100mm focal length is a big plus in providing enough distance from the subject to use a sturdy tripod in most situations and for hand-held shots at higher ISO as well. Weather-resistant "WR" metal construction is a bonus. Manual focus (which I use most of the time) is quick and precise due to location, knurling and width of the focusing ring. The same knurling/width is found at the rear of the lens which facilitates mounting and dismounting on the camera body. 49mm filter size makes this item less expensive... (and is same size as on two 'legacy' lenses from my Pentax MX film camera: 50mm normal and 28mm wideangle).

Great lens except that a few times it hunted although lighting wasn't bad. I wanted the 90mm Tamron but went with this because of WR.

Doesnt take up much room in your camera bag. Does its job as a macro well. You have to get close but that's the point of a prime macro lens.

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

I am a hobbyist, not a professional. I fumble, puzzle, scratch my head and occasionally stumble backward into taking a decent photo. I enjoy the process. As comparison is the thief of joy, I will not (nor can I) wage this lens against another brand's macro lens. I bought it. I'm happy with it. I'm going to keep it. Here's what I've discovered:

At 375 grams (with hood, but not caps) it's my lightest lens. In the same configuration, my Pentax DA 55 1.4 is 418 grams and my Sigma 18-35 1.8 zoom is a whopping 850 grams. For distant shots using my K3 (apsc), 100mm seems to yield an image which is about 1/3 larger than what is seen with the naked eye. Bokeh is round and smooth at any aperture which produces it. At the closest possible macro focus, my K3's frame is filled with an object 24mm in width edge-to-edge (see attached photo with inset). Focus is very quick and spot-on. Images have had good color and contrast in a variety of lighting conditions.

Purple fringe (CA) is evident on high contrast edges, especially if you zoom in on the pixels. Easily fixed in post processing, but notable. Focus motor is quite loud. I agree that a focus limiter would be nice. The stroke of the front element is long and if it misses focus, it has to move a very long way to sweep the full range and regain it.

In the first attached photo, you'll see the K3 on tripod with lens at minimum focus to get an idea of how close you might be to your subject for full macro. The lower right in that image shows what the camera sees at that distance. Notice how shallow the depth of field is in daylight at maximum (2.8) aperture: the depth of a nickle is already out of focus. Macro requires a lot of light in order to stop-down and gain depth. It's the nature of the beast, as I understand it, and some of the best images we've seen have actually been composite stacks. The upper right inset shows the lens compared with the Pentax 55 1.4.

The little tree frog is only about 25mm long; basking in the setting sun on my front storm door. The image is cropped, not at minimum focus (I was afraid of scaring him off). ISO 100, F4, 1/200/sec, hand-held.

I bought this lens here at BH while it was on discount from Pentax (instant rebate?). It is now my least expensive lens and as such, the best bang-for-the-buck so far. I am pleased and delighted. I hope it lasts a good long time. And, unless I am mistaken, it will be fully functional on the K1 should I ever wish to join the full-frame crowd.

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

Only used this lens a little bit, but the results so far have been impressive. The lens is very compact and light, significantly lighter than my old Tokina macro. The hood system is odd: the hood attaches to part of the lens that does not move during focusing, so the lens moves forward inside the hood, but it works. The front element is deeply recessed from the front edge of the lens which would provide adequate shading in some situations. A thread-on hood (49mm)could be used on the mobile section in lieu of the provided bayonet-mount hood. Auto-focus adequate, manual focus much better in macro range (it ALWAYS is).

For four years I had a Tamron 90mm Di macro and I was very happy with it's sharpness and ease of use. When the price of the Pentax 100mm macro wr started falling last year, I started to take notice and pondered the upgrade. When the price dropped below $, I traded in the Tamron and bought the Pentax. The great thing is that I got a top-notch lens with a rugged construction for just $! No regrets here!

I use this lens for bugs and flowers. Because of its great focus range it takes a couple of seconds to achieve focus. Because of this I just use manual focus. Even with AF I need to make a small manual adjustment to have the correct depth-of-field. The optics appear to be quite good.

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

Great build quality, contrasty images, accurate focus, very sharp, minimal flair, minimal distortion, minimal CA.

It is a bit bigger than any of the DA limited lenses, but it is still light weight. Quick shift focusing works great.

A focus limiter would be nice as sometimes the lens will hunt throughout the entire focal range in low contrast situations but most of the time this was not an issue.

Even though it is a DFA lens, it definitely seems more in league with the DA limited series.

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

Sharp lense and reasonably fast f/2.8. Works excellently as I expected as a macro. With the 100mm focal length I am a good distance away from subject in macro. Depth of field is very narrow wide open, great bokeh.

I often manually focus for macro to control focus easily. Auto focusing from macro to a long distance can be slow & hunt, smaller adjustments are quick and accurate.

I am finding I use this lens often for tight portraits and moderate telephoto street and landscapes since it is sharper and faster than my 18-55mm kit lens and 50-300mm f/4-5.8. It compliments well my 35mm f/2 and 50mm f1.8. when I want to go in tighter.

Weather sealing is a great bonus for outdoor use. Build is impressive, all metal exterior.

This is an excellent portrait lens and is well suited for the street as well. Enough reach, extremely fast and accurate focusing. I was comparing this to the Samyang 1.4 85 and glad I chose this. Instead of 95% in-focus night shots with wonderful bokeh I probably would have got no better than 50% with a manual at night!

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

This is my all-around telephoto, from macro to portrait. It matches my Pentax K3 wonderfully. I had a choice between the 70mm F2.4 or this, and i made the right choice for the flexibility the 100mm offered. Happy, happy.

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

As a free-lance writer and photographer, I do a lot of product shots. From a tripod, photographing smaller inanimate objects, the SMC-DA 35mm Macro Limited has been my go-to lens for some time. It's only limiting factor is that one has to get pretty close to the subject for macro shots.

The SMC-D FA 100mm WR permits being at a bit of a distance to do macro work. This is an advantage in photographing such things as birds, insects, flowers in the wind, etc. To make this review short, I will say that hands down, this is absolutely the sharpest lens in my Pentax lineup (I have a total of 7 Pentax lenses for my K-3). In autofocus mode, the lens may take some time and hunt a bit over its wide range, which is from infinity to about 12 inches away from the subject. My solution is just to go manual, and move back and forward just a bit to get things in proper focus when in the field.

I love the bokeh the lens provides in the out-of-focus areas, and the fact that I can use it in inclement weather, since it's weather resistant. It's also full-frame compatible, so if I decide to opt for the coming Pentax full-frame camera, it will be usable for it, also.

I give the lens very high marks, and were it not for the focus hunting, I'd give it a "10" overall. But mark my words - you will have to look far and wide to find a sharper lens for macro work.
