Great lens for the money!

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

I bought this lens for my Pentax K-3. I'm a professional photographer and wanted the best macro I could buy for it. I didn't give the lens 5 stars because it hunts more than any other macro lens I've owned and it's by far the noisiest one I've owned by any maker. I would rate it 4.5 for sharpness. The build quality is super, it's weather proof and has a great lens hood as well! I've only had the lens for a couple of weeks so I can't post a lot of pics. I've attached some test shots of flowers in my yard. I would give this lens my recommendation. Make sure you buy a high quality UV filter for it, don't skimp. B&H is the best camera store around, buy with confidence.

Excellent Sharpness and Clarity

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

After spending the time to test and adjust the fine auto focus on my K-3, this lens delivers excellent sharpness and image quality from nearly wide open. Focusing is relative fast, but noisy as it is screw drive, though accurate.

Beautiful lens of compact size!

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

I have been longing for such lens for so long based on the fantastic reviews I read online. It is a true performer with solid build-quality. This lens produce extraordinarily sharp images. Color aberration is barely noticeable except at F/2.8. If there is one thing I want to complain about, that would be the lack of focus range limiter. Since it is a macro lens, focusing can take long time from min-focus range to infinity. A limiter would have made it better for auto focus.

Great macro, slight hunting

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

Spent just a little time with this gem but it's really a great macro. Quick-shift focus system works well, very long focus throw of course as a macro. Haven't seen it in my other lenses but I found that this one sometimes tries to hunt in the wrong direction on my k3-ii, might just be that it's _so_ out of focus there is no information to be had -- this is my first autofocus macro lens so I can't compare.

Truly Excellent!

By EdtheEngineer

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

Edge-to-edge sharp... my 'Go-To' for close-up work. ==> See attached photos taken with this lens and Pentax K-5 II (APS-C) dSLR. 100mm focal length is a big plus in providing enough distance from the subject to use a sturdy tripod in most situations and for hand-held shots at higher ISO as well. Weather-resistant "WR" metal construction is a bonus. Manual focus (which I use most of the time) is quick and precise due to location, knurling and width of the focusing ring. The same knurling/width is found at the rear of the lens which facilitates mounting and dismounting on the camera body. 49mm filter size makes this item less expensive... (and is same size as on two 'legacy' lenses from my Pentax MX film camera: 50mm normal and 28mm wideangle).

Doesnt take up much room in your camera bag. Does its job as a macro well. You have to get close but that's the point of a prime macro lens.

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

I am a hobbyist, not a professional. I fumble, puzzle, scratch my head and occasionally stumble backward into taking a decent photo. I enjoy the process. As comparison is the thief of joy, I will not (nor can I) wage this lens against another brand's macro lens. I bought it. I'm happy with it. I'm going to keep it. Here's what I've discovered:

At 375 grams (with hood, but not caps) it's my lightest lens. In the same configuration, my Pentax DA 55 1.4 is 418 grams and my Sigma 18-35 1.8 zoom is a whopping 850 grams. For distant shots using my K3 (apsc), 100mm seems to yield an image which is about 1/3 larger than what is seen with the naked eye. Bokeh is round and smooth at any aperture which produces it. At the closest possible macro focus, my K3's frame is filled with an object 24mm in width edge-to-edge (see attached photo with inset). Focus is very quick and spot-on. Images have had good color and contrast in a variety of lighting conditions.

Purple fringe (CA) is evident on high contrast edges, especially if you zoom in on the pixels. Easily fixed in post processing, but notable. Focus motor is quite loud. I agree that a focus limiter would be nice. The stroke of the front element is long and if it misses focus, it has to move a very long way to sweep the full range and regain it.

In the first attached photo, you'll see the K3 on tripod with lens at minimum focus to get an idea of how close you might be to your subject for full macro. The lower right in that image shows what the camera sees at that distance. Notice how shallow the depth of field is in daylight at maximum (2.8) aperture: the depth of a nickle is already out of focus. Macro requires a lot of light in order to stop-down and gain depth. It's the nature of the beast, as I understand it, and some of the best images we've seen have actually been composite stacks. The upper right inset shows the lens compared with the Pentax 55 1.4.

The little tree frog is only about 25mm long; basking in the setting sun on my front storm door. The image is cropped, not at minimum focus (I was afraid of scaring him off). ISO 100, F4, 1/200/sec, hand-held.

I bought this lens here at BH while it was on discount from Pentax (instant rebate?). It is now my least expensive lens and as such, the best bang-for-the-buck so far. I am pleased and delighted. I hope it lasts a good long time. And, unless I am mistaken, it will be fully functional on the K1 should I ever wish to join the full-frame crowd.

Although I have not been able to use as much as I would like, the color on the few flower pictures are spectacular. So much that they are part of my framed pictures in my living room. Great macro lens from Pentax.

Comments about smc Pentax-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens:

Only used this lens a little bit, but the results so far have been impressive. The lens is very compact and light, significantly lighter than my old Tokina macro. The hood system is odd: the hood attaches to part of the lens that does not move during focusing, so the lens moves forward inside the hood, but it works. The front element is deeply recessed from the front edge of the lens which would provide adequate shading in some situations. A thread-on hood (49mm)could be used on the mobile section in lieu of the provided bayonet-mount hood. Auto-focus adequate, manual focus much better in macro range (it ALWAYS is).
