I am a wide angle fanatic. I love to layer my photos and frame subjects through busy foreground elements. So when I was looking for a new wide lens, it was between this one or the 14-24mm 2.8. It took me a while to decide, but I finally pulled the trigger on this one and do not regret it a single bit (then again I might have said the same thing about the 14-24 if I had went with it). Either way, this lens is incredible. It is sharp wide open, handles back lit situations very well and the bokeh is outstanding (if you are standing close to your subject). Because it is such a wide lens, the large 1.4 aperture is more useful for shooting in low light situations than it is for bokeh. But when you are standing close enough to your subject and shooting wide open, the bokeh is incredibly smooth and creamy. I started out shooting documentary and photojournalism work, which is why I became hooked on wide angle lenses. However, I am currently in the middle of starting a wedding photography business, so I wanted to switch from a wide-angle 2.8 zoom to a wide-angle 1.4 prime lens. This was a big factor in me choosing this 24mm over the 14-24. Anyways, this is an incredible lens, and if you love wide angle photos and want a prime lens (and if you shoot Nikon, obviously) then this is pretty much the only option you should consider. Sigma will probably release a 24mm 1.4 Art lens sometime in the near-ish future, and it will probably be a pretty awesome lens too. But Sigma will never be Nikon. So, to end this rambling, if you love shooting wide angles, get it. I promise you will love it and will not have buyer's remorse. If you think you might like wide angles but aren't sure, try renting this lens first before dropping so much money. And if you prefer shooting a longer focal length but need a wide lens primarily for scene setters, invest the money into a lens of your prefered focal length and purchase a cheaper wide, such as the 20mm 2.8.

I bought this thinking I would use it on both FF and DX. It required a +1 adjustment on the D700 to get perfect focus, and that is not bad. On the D200 it back-focused significantly and on the D300s it required a -20 fine-tuning to compensate for the severe front-focus and it was not enough, it still front focused. Sharpness in the center was extremely sharp center and the corners better than good. The corners continue improving to about 2.8 and from there on out no noticeable improvement. Vignette is not bad wide open and the bokeh is stunning. If not for the focusing issues, I would have kept it. For a comparison, I borrowed a 28mm Sigma 1.8 and wide open the Nikon was sharper center and corner by a small margin. Stopping down to 2.0 the difference was harder to distinguish and by 2.8 there were equal. The Sigma continued improving all the way to 8.0 while the Nikon began to degrade. Doing outdoor testing for CA's wide open the Nikon was amazing and had zero CA, while the sigma had some minor CA, stopping down to 2.0 and 2.8 the Sigma improve drastically. The Nikon did not need to because it was already perfect. I also tested for flare and both exhibited similar better than expected characteristics.Overall, this lens this is the best lens I have ever used wide open. For low light shooters it is a must have. I decided to send it back to B&H and wait for the 35mm 1.4 AF-S and I am going to buy the Sigma 28mm 1.8 to hold me over in the mean time. Bottom line I expected better from a [$] lens, I would rather struggle going through a few $350 Sigma lenses looking for a good copy then doing the same thing on [$] Nikons. I just hope Nikon gets their act straight with the 35mm 1.4 AF-S.

Good lens for low light and subject isolation with fascinating Bokeh. Works best with accessory flash based focus assist, achieving more precise focus in very subdued lighting. This lens makes some special pictures otherwise unobtainable with the other 24mm optics. Buy this only if you need the unique imaging results of f/1.4 in a very wide angle lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24mm f/1.4G ED Lens:

This lens is the king of shapness among all lenses ever made. I was amazed at how shap the results were when I used it at a company event in low light conditions. The F1.4 makes it very easy to shoot at higher shutter speeds and thus keep the images super sharp. It's not a heavy lens which makes it easy to carry around - definitely not as heavy as the 14-24mm.

This is one of my favorite lenses these days. The clarity is just outstanding. This is also an excellent wide portrait lens in tight spots or just to have a good perspective. Focusing is very fast, accurate and colors are just brilliant. The sharpness can be seen in the pic I inserted here. In full res on D800E, I can see each leaf very clearly. There is really no downside for this lens. Superb!

I shoot a lot of dusk & night time city scapes,I had been using my 24-70 2.8, which has been great but really wanted the greater handheld ability of brighter glass, and the superior sharpness of a prime. I have been very happy on both accounts, there is much less aberration to the prime vrs the zoom. If you are shooting in low light stituations, and looking for true sharpness in architecture, this is the lens for you. If you excecpt to use it for many years as i do its toatally worth the coast.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24mm f/1.4G ED Lens:

We use the lens at a national laboratory with a very expensive high-speed camera that captures videos of fast moving projectiles (speeds up to 1000 m/s) composed of solid hydrogen at temperatures of a few degrees above absolute zero (-450 degrees F). The camera (>$) is usually set for the minimum shutter time of 0.3 microseconds. With this setup, it is difficult to have enough light to collect useful videos. Using this lens at 1.4 yields great videos of fantastic events, including the capability to evaluate in-flight integrity and impact mechanisms. It is simply the best wide-angle lens when light is an issue.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24mm f/1.4G ED Lens:

As others have stated, lens is tack sharp and colors vibrant. Yet, it has random trouble focusing at times. Seemed ok in good light if you are patient. This lens will not reliably focus if you are trying to quickly point and shoot. Dim light is worse. It may or may not focus. It will lock on while showing a blurry image in the viewfinder. This can be corrected my manually focusing in live-view. For 2k it should be flawless. I returned.

The proof is in the work. I owned a 16-35 before and it was too long, I also used that lens more around the 22-28mm range. This 24mm is just perfect, amazing with light. A good size. I'd get rid of my camera before I get rid of it. Love it!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24mm f/1.4G ED Lens:

As expected, it's a fantastic piece of glass (actually 12 pieces of glass). Any distortion has more to do with the nature of wide angle subjects rather than any imperfection in lens design. The Nikon pro lenses have noticeably higher contrast and this one's no exception. You can take sharp pictures with any Nikon lens but the true test is how the images hold up when cropped. Although the below comparison is a huge crop and compares lenses of vastly different cost as well as prime vs fixed focal length, it still shows how different lenses can perform. It also shows how a heavy pro lens allows for hand held shooting sans VR.Top was hand held with D4s and the 24mm f1.4. Bottom was taken with the 24-85 f3.5-4.5 VR with the same settings but with a D3 so there's a tad more noise. Astonishing difference in lens distortion at this magnification. Lighter blue sky after sunset in the top image is probably attributable to the shot being taken a few minutes earlier in the evening. This wasn't a controlled scientific test :)Of course other, more expensive 24mm Nikon lenses or mid zooms set to a 24mm focal length would look better but remember - both these full frame shots may look good to the casual eye (see below - bottom shot taken with the 24-85 VR has heinous distortion if you really examine it).

I use this lens primarily for low-light situations where I can't use flash. It's fast, sharp, and the AF is smooth. The plastic exterior feels cheaply made for the price, which makes me wonder about its durability, but for now I'm in love with the images I get with this thing.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24mm f/1.4G ED Lens:

I have owned very many other wide angle lenses for the specific photography I do which is of people in their environment. I have never worked with a lens that delivers this kind of quality in this kind of shooting conditions
I am pleasantly surprised with the level of performance despite the high expectations I already had.

I'm an amateur and don't test a new lens by shooting resolution charts. I simply put the lens on my D800 and take it out for the day. The interior photos of my local Starbucks were super sharp. The focus speed is outstanding and the focus appears to be spot on. I love this lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24mm f/1.4G ED Lens:

Let me explain this lens by using an analogy: What's the point of playing a Stradivari if it does not stay in tune during a live concert? My 24/1.4 delivers amazing results with regard to color reproduction, saturation, contrast, bokeh and sharpness - provided it catches the intended plane of focus. I learned that the focusing accuracy (and successful fine tuning) of this lens depends very much on the selected aperture and object distance. I conclude that with this instrument one either has to play the same note all the time or practice a lot in order to achieve great results. It can be quite frustrating to work with this thing. However, when it is in tune the music shines and is very enjoyable indeed.
