I have never been a big fan of zoom lenses until I purchased this lens. In the last few years I have shot Canon L primes almost exclusively on full frame bodies (mainly the 35L, 50L, 85L, and the 135L) loved the results but sometimes disappointed with the frequency of missed focus shots and slow to focus issues in certain lighting conditions. I knew I'd be sacrificing the shallow DOF look you get when shooting wider than f/2.8, but what I didn't realize was how great the bokeh / background blur would be with the 70-200 zoomed beyond the 135mm range. What I also didn't expect was the incredible eye popping color, tack sharp images, and fast accurate focusing. Many people complain about how heavy this lens is and I have no problem packing this around while shooting events for 8 hours or more attached to a full frame body with a battery grip and external flash. My only regret was that I waited so long to purchase this lens. This is a must have for portraits, weddings, and just about anything else you want to shoot. Do I still shoot primes?.... well of course I do, but I find myself using this lens more often than not. One of the most impressive things about this lens is the Image stabilization, with IS on I am able to hand hold this lens zoomed in at 200mm at shutter speeds as low as 1/20th sec while still capturing acceptable images (something I would never attempt with my 135L). If you are thinking about buying this lens stop thinking and just do it. You will not regret it…

I have been engaged in photography for more than 40 years with a statistical process improvement background. So I was more than interested to see if the 70-200 f-2.8 L II was significantly better than the L I. After 2 days of intensive testing my findings using both an EOS 1DS and 20D body are as follows. Contrast for the L II was slightly better. Resolution at 200mm was consistently 1 pair number lower [less good] at the center at f-2.8, 4.0, and 5.6 on the USAF 1951 resolution chart. Resolution through a series 1 Canon 2X multiplier was equal over the same aperture settings. The extreme edge resolution was seen to be slightly better from images of books on a shelf—"real world". Auto focus was significantly faster in bright light, which may be of benefit depending on what you photograph. Image stabilization is about 1 stop improved, but with the high ISO capabilities of current Canon cameras, a one stop increased setting would equalize this difference at the possible expense of increased noise. I chose not to test another sample, because even if a newer sample were to test one pair number higher [better] than the L I, [a possible manufacturing variation] the improvement would probably not be detectable by viewing a 300 PPI printed version at "normal viewing distance." For my purpose, primarily fine art photography, my results simply do not justify the price. So my advice is to test carefully before committing to an L II purchase; reality vs. your expectations may vary…

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

This lens is just a must-have. For sports photography when there is low light, this lens really shines. You couldn't ask for anything better except for it to be a little lighter and less expensive. Still, it's worth every penny!

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

So far my best lens, bought about two weeks ago and so in love with it...
So sharp and fast focus that it makes look the rest of my lenses a step behind (I'm talking about some very good pieces, even primes).
I'm not a kind of technicalities, I evaluate my instruments by the results in the field, and based on this I issue my judgment on this device.
This is a very versatile lens, good for portraits, landscape, and just about anything else you want to shoot; this guy will never let you down.
Is a heavy lens for sure, but is the price you pay for such quality in a single tool.

This lens is excellent for low light events and sports where the available light requires use of a low f stop to get the needed shutter speed. I have a number of Canon lenses and when Canon makes an L lens you can be assured that it will do the job

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I love this lens for its clear pictures and flattering portraits. I just upgraded to Canon 5d Mark III, and this is the lens I researched on and chose to buy for my new camera. I wasn't disappointed. I used it for both landscapes and portraits. Great boken and clear subject's details with F2.8. I am still learning about auto focus features. The only con so far is its big size and weight.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

The best quality lens of Canon. It is a great all around lens. Medium tele to a larger tele. A large f-stop lens. 2.8. You can add a tele extender and still have a nice wide f-stop.

Down side. It is quite heavy and also longer than the 100 to 400mm tele.

But, it is one of the 3 lens I like to have with me. Add the small tele 40 to 70 and the 16 to 35 and you have all your bases covered.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I've always wanted this lens, yet I kept finding excuses to procrastinate buying it with using some other lenses in my camera bag.
The real tipping point was when my boys started their new Lacrosse season. Bright skies, fast action and large fields.
I decided to finally pull the trigger on that lens.
Mounted it on my 5D mkIII and took many indoor test shots when it arrived in the evening. Low light, hand-held, slow exposure.
I only needed to bump the ISO to 3200 to get to the reasonable shutter speed while at f/2.8. The IS allowed me to hand hold pictures with no problem.
Sharpness, colors and picture quality out-of-the-box blew me away when I loaded the pictures to the LR that evening.
Next morning, we went for the Lacrosse games. 1PM, clear sunny skies. I started at f/5.6 afraid of the focusing issues. But then I quickly changed that to f/2.8 for the shallow depth and my 5D drove the focusing on the lens beautifully. Fast and laser precise no matter how fast the objects were moving.
The results from both the indoor shots and outdoor games were simply jaw-dropping.
Focus was spot on for most of the shots. Creamy bokeh with f/2.8. Amazing colors, sharpness.
The only thing that I needed to do in LR was little cropping as 200mm is sometimes a bit short for the larger fields.
I've never mentioned the weight of this lens as for me it never created any problem even while carrying it around for 4 hours in the field. The tripod ring will come handy for longer sessions where I'll probably be using a monopod.

This lens makes me think about one thing, though: "why did I wait so long to get it?"

Go buy it today, you will never regret it!

I'm using for sports and portraits and I love the results, especially with natural lighting portraits. I am not extremely wealthy, but I think I've invested in a great lens here.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

Plenty has already been written about the quality of this lens, but I have one more thing to add that most haven't heard before. I inadvertantly nudged the 70-200 off a 6 foot high shelf. It was protected by the rather thin lens bag that ships with it when it hit the floor. The shock was severe enough to crack the B&W filter glass in half, but the lens itself suffered absolutely no optical or physical damage. This is a lens that can take a beating.
