I have never been a big fan of zoom lenses until I purchased this lens. In the last few years I have shot Canon L primes almost exclusively on full frame bodies (mainly the 35L, 50L, 85L, and the 135L) loved the results but sometimes disappointed with the frequency of missed focus shots and slow to focus issues in certain lighting conditions. I knew I'd be sacrificing the shallow DOF look you get when shooting wider than f/2.8, but what I didn't realize was how great the bokeh / background blur would be with the 70-200 zoomed beyond the 135mm range. What I also didn't expect was the incredible eye popping color, tack sharp images, and fast accurate focusing. Many people complain about how heavy this lens is and I have no problem packing this around while shooting events for 8 hours or more attached to a full frame body with a battery grip and external flash. My only regret was that I waited so long to purchase this lens. This is a must have for portraits, weddings, and just about anything else you want to shoot. Do I still shoot primes?.... well of course I do, but I find myself using this lens more often than not. One of the most impressive things about this lens is the Image stabilization, with IS on I am able to hand hold this lens zoomed in at 200mm at shutter speeds as low as 1/20th sec while still capturing acceptable images (something I would never attempt with my 135L). If you are thinking about buying this lens stop thinking and just do it. You will not regret it…

I have been engaged in photography for more than 40 years with a statistical process improvement background. So I was more than interested to see if the 70-200 f-2.8 L II was significantly better than the L I. After 2 days of intensive testing my findings using both an EOS 1DS and 20D body are as follows. Contrast for the L II was slightly better. Resolution at 200mm was consistently 1 pair number lower [less good] at the center at f-2.8, 4.0, and 5.6 on the USAF 1951 resolution chart. Resolution through a series 1 Canon 2X multiplier was equal over the same aperture settings. The extreme edge resolution was seen to be slightly better from images of books on a shelf—"real world". Auto focus was significantly faster in bright light, which may be of benefit depending on what you photograph. Image stabilization is about 1 stop improved, but with the high ISO capabilities of current Canon cameras, a one stop increased setting would equalize this difference at the possible expense of increased noise. I chose not to test another sample, because even if a newer sample were to test one pair number higher [better] than the L I, [a possible manufacturing variation] the improvement would probably not be detectable by viewing a 300 PPI printed version at "normal viewing distance." For my purpose, primarily fine art photography, my results simply do not justify the price. So my advice is to test carefully before committing to an L II purchase; reality vs. your expectations may vary…

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

If you shoot weddings or any other type of events, this lens is for you. It's great in low light. It's a bit heavy, but it's worth carrying around. I also own the canon ef 70-200 f4L IS. However, that lens stays home and serves as my back up lens.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I shoot a lot of horse shows and this lens is the best lens I've ever tried for sports. I couple it with the Canon 7D Mark II, which is extremely fast as well. The combination allows me to shoot in low light and low ISO settings that give me clean stop action photos. Highly recommended.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

It's a great lens.......I owned a new Tamron 70-200 and was very pleased with it but my associate kept telling me that I'd love the canon even more....I put it off until my client numbers grew and then I bit the bullet for the white beast! I do not regret at all. I am in love with this lens! It is expensive, but if you want the very best for paying clients, you need to go ahead and do it!

Simply Awesome!

By Dalefmeyer.photography

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I have owned and used many lenses in my life but this zoom is one of the best I have ever owned. The lens build is stellar! Zoom and focus ring damping is just right! Balance is very good! But the most impressive attribute is the optics and the images this lens produces which have great sharpness and a unique rendering and drawing of art feel. I use this lens on a Canon 5DSR which is currently the best test of this lenses abilities and it is awesome! Just buy it?

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

Este multifuncional objetivo (retrato, naturaleza, deporte, periodismo) puede hacerte sin duda alguna la vida más fácil. Su luminosidad así como la rapidez, la estabilidad y los detalles que se pueden lograr con el se puede comparar con muy pocos. Es un objetivo que se puede invertir cada dolar que cuesta y de seguro no te arrepentirás.

Great Lens

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I use this lens on a 7DII body and have been pleased with the results. The AF is very fast and accurate and I like that I can shoot in lower light conditions with a wider aperture than my 100-400mm is capable of. I have used it with the 1.4xIII and noticed a slight reduction in AF speed compared to without it but still very fast to focus. Image quality is sharp across all of the apertures that I have tried so far.

Sharp as a tack

By Michael G

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

This is one sharp lens. Technique always plays a large part in how good a result a photographer gets. Once your dialed in on the how, this lens, and others of the same marque, deliver. Colour is bright, contrast stunning and sharp as can be. I've had and sold the previous version and an earlier Mk2 but this one is a keeper. Used it with a 1.4x MkIII and it's still awesome.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I have used my Canon 70-200mm f/4-5.6 for eleven years and taken many good photos with it, but it finally become apparent that I needed to update my "long" lens if I were going to improve. I did research for over a year to find the appropriate replacement and finally decided on the Ef 70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM. I decided to purchase a Canon Extender 2x II to go along with it to give me even more options. I've now had sufficient time to evaluate the 70-200mm and to realize that it's going to take me a long time to fully utilize the sophisticated technology built into this lens. My measurement of "sharp" before was my wonderful EF 100mm macro f/2.8L, but the 700-200 challenges it every day. The combination (along with Canon's EF 17-40mm f/4L lens) really challenges me to explore their capacities for great photos.
Its no lightweight but since I shoot almost exclusively on tripod or monopod that's not a big problem. It feels like it's built like a tank and gives me confidence to try anything with it. It's certainly possible to take bad photos with it... I've managed several times!... but so far it's never been the fault of the lens.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

To give some context let me say I am an avid amateur photographer. Over the years I've collected a number of Canon lenses: 17-35mm/F2.8L, 24-70mm/f2.8L, 135mm/f2.0L and a 400mm/f 5.6L. All of these are wonderful lenses in their own right and I have enjoyed using them immensely.

I decided to buy the 70-200mm/F2.8L II based on reviews found on the B&H website and the rather more scientific reviews found at the DxO Mark website.

As you may have noticed none of my other lenses are image stabilized and I might have been a skeptic, well I'm a doubter NO MORE. The 70-200mm/f2.8 lens has made me a convert. The ability to get a razor sharp images in low light without dragging out the tripod is wonderful. This lens seems sharp at all focal lengths and apertures.

If you plan on buying this lens just be aware it is a brick (heavy that is). I am more than willing to accept the weight of the lens for the performance it yields. I could not be happier.
