I use it for carrying equipment while snowboarding. I require a bag that can take abuse during violent spills, either turtling or cartwheeling down. My camera is a Canon 5D and a 24-105mm L lens. I also carry batteries, extra lenses, lens hoods, filters, sometimes a small video camera or lunch. It has worked well in heavy snow conditions and during some nasty spills. The bag is easily swung around to front for riding lifts and sideways for accessing the camera. The side access is optimal and being symmetrical right or left doesn't matter. The straps secure it tightly onto your body, but still can be swung around while leaving the waist and chest straps buckled. The camera can go in and out in a flash without any unbuckling. The zipper access is easily managed with gloves and can be done with mittens as well. The bag is designed for photo/video equipment and not much else (not a gym or laptop bag). The price was comparable to other models and brands. The only issue I had is with the waist strap getting caught on things when the bag was being stowed away on the airplane.

It was a nice bag and a nice size which is why I downgraded from the larger Evolution to this smaller one. However, I carry a small lap top and there was no space for that. Also that swing around feature wasn't really comfortable for me - perhaps because I am barely above 5 feet. I finally settled on the Kata BumbleBee with the dedicated padded lap top compartment and much more space for personal items. I sacrificed to greater size. We shall see...

The Tamrac Evolution was comfortable to wear and seemed light enough. The other complaint I had was the stiffness of the front opening for the camera - the one at front. That front loading place was also a bit small. Perhaps the larger one would have been good, but I went in another direction!

It seemed very well made.

Great carry all! Love this sling backpack. Holds my Nikon SLR with a 70-300mm attached, 35mm next to it along with flash unit. Plenty of room up top for my 18-250mm to reside along with filters, cleaners, etc. ONLY drawback is NO place for tablet to store. Huh? Tamrac, what is up with that? Evo 6 is just awesome, just know there is no storage for your tablet. Good buy and use it all the time.

This is my second Evolution 6 bag. My first bag is used to house D7000 and D600 with lens attached along with two other lens plus two flash. Have taken to all of my shooting including overseas trips. This bag is built like a tank and the first one which I used for past 4 years shows no sign of wear. My second bag will be used to hold mirrorless system. Only improvement that I can think of is to create a room for 10" iPad.

Comments about 5786 Evolution 6 Photo Sling Backpack (Black):

I bought my 1st tamrac backpack in 1985. I purchased this one to house my Mamiya 7, 2 lenses, film and the rest of the necessary stuff; and still have room to spare. I am a small woman so it is difficult to get backpacks that fit comfortably. This fits the bill in terms of size, room for equipment and comfort.

A Nikon D750 with a 24-120F4 fits but just barely. This is a very versatile pack with multiple ways to carry. Right sling, left sling, backpack all work well. Very well made and finished. Would have given it 5 if it were just slightly bigger.

Comments about 5786 Evolution 6 Photo Sling Backpack (Black):

I purchased this bag on the recommendation of a sales associate at B&H. I came in with another bag in mind.

I had landed in NY without a day bag for my gear and planned on picking one up at B&H. When he suggested this bag, I could see its function but thought it was too small. I bought it, but anticipated returning it the next day after testing gear in it.

Much to my surprise, the bag holds lots of gear. I had a 5DmkIII with 24-105 f/4.0 mounted in the side entry. A 70-200 f/2.8 fit into the top storage space. There was room for a few small items in there with it. Still room for flash and 2 primes inside the main area of the bag. Easily enough gear for a day on the street.

Where the bag really shines is in it's ability to convert easily from a backpack to a sling bag. On long hauls I used it as a backpack and when I felt I might want my gear, I was able to quickly convert to a sling bag by un-clipping and moving the shoulder straps. These are robust clips that should last. Straps that are not in use (including the waist strap) can be tucked away in storage spaces built into the bag. Once the bag is in sling formation, its easy to slide the bag around and open it directly in front of you, lifting the camera up out of the bag. No reaching around, the bag comes to you. I felt the gear was very safe and found the sling application very practical for on the go shooting. It also provided a platform to rest the camera when not shooting.

The bag also provides a tripod pocket and strap system that looks good, although I haven't tried it yet. Inside the compartment doors are clear pouches that can store small items such as memory cards. They're a little tight for batteries, but they do work. The side entry compartment doors have a couple of pockets in them as well. One is supposed to work to hold lens caps but 70mm wanted to fall out. It worked, but I wasn't 100% sure it would hold. It could have been a bit larger. It would be fine for smaller sizes though. A rain cover is also included in one of the side pouches.

I would say overall this bag is a great value. The convertible feature is fantastic if you are going to be carrying gear for a long time. Switching to backpack is a shoulder saver for sure. Sling can be on either side so you can use the side that works best for you, or switch it up to prevent fatigue on one shoulder.

Thanks to the sale associate at B&H for selling me the right bag for my needs, even though it was a lower priced bag than the one I came in for!

Comments about 5786 Evolution 6 Photo Sling Backpack (Brown with Tan):

I was disappointed to realize how small the storage capabilities are in this backpack. The main zipper is located too close to the back resulting in a lip that makes getting a camera in and out a pain. The auxilary storage is entirely veritically oriented with open scoop type pockets that are essentially worthless if the pack is every turned upside down.

I purchased this backpack/camera bag to replace my Tamrac Velocity 6 which I found to be a great bag in itself just a little too small. The Evolution is so comfy and carries all my gear along with my large wallet and my e reader. The first day out I carried it all day up and down rocky terrain. The only thing I would add to the bag would be a harness that would clip in my camera.

This is a really great day pack with so many possible configurations. The main pocket can hold a body and around 3 small lenses, but don't expect the rest of the pockets to hold anything other than maybe a book and some accessories. Definitely not for if you want to carry around a laptop, but can fit small things. Overall rugged and awesome.

I use it to travel, to be onest it is a little bit smaller, but the Evolution 8 it was too much for my needs.

Comments about 5786 Evolution 6 Photo Sling Backpack (Brown with Tan):

I was looking for a bag to carry one DSLR, 2 lenses, light carbon fiber tripod and some accessories and this fit the bill. However there's a few things about it that I'm not thrilled about:
                        (a) Bag has Hip belt. I don't see what you could carry in this small bag other than a bowling ball to make a hip belt necessary. I cut off the belt with scissors.
                        (b) Top compartment should be a little larger. You can't fit much in here, perhaps a shirt and sandwich. 7" kindle or ipad mini won't fit either. I'd prefer a little more room here, and less below, but I'll figure this out.
                        (c) Top handle is a little shabby. And there's not enough clearance between it and the bag. I like a solid well designed, well built top handle.

Other than the hip belt which I'm not sure what they were thinking, this is a good bag for hiking and even getting around the city with <15 lbs of gear. I'm carrying a T3i, 10-22/24-105/40mm lenses no problem, with some filters, intervalometer & Rode mic around generally these days.
I have not used the rain cover yet, so I don't know the pros/cons of it.
