- I use the reader on location with my MacBook Pro to import footage from the Canon 7D and 5D
- I highly recommend this reader over both FireWire 800 card readers (although the speed is about the same) and ANY USB CF card reader. The cost is less (less than half of the 800 reader), the speed is amazing (approx 6-7 minutes download time for a full 16GB card), and it keeps your USB and FireWire ports free for your hard drives and other peripherals
- It's not compatible (as far as I know) with desktop computers, so you have to use it with your laptop, but for me that's not really a detractor from using the product. If you don't have a proper size port for your laptop, then you could order the FireWire 800 version for 2-3x the price and then have the option to go into an 800-equipped desktop computer. But I love this thing!

Like many, I initially used with OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) without issue. The transfers were quick enough compared to using the camera via USB. It seemed a great use of a slot that usually goes unused on my system.

The build quality is a little cheap. It seems after a while the metal express slot portion and the plastic card receiver end start to get very flimsy and I worry they will break apart. Traveling in my bag probably doesn't help. However, on the road is when I need it the most.

Upgrade to Lion and the card becomes a liability. It causes kernel panics which, if you are not familiar, is when your Mac gets the grey wipe from top to bottom and a message to hold the power button to reboot. Not good.

There do not seem to be very many options out there for express card readers. Some suggest using a firewire reader, but for me, that port is being used as the destination drive for the import. The market is wide open for a good express card reader.

It works great, and file trensfer is fast. No more hassle with finding the cable for the external card reader. The connection between the plastic housing and the metal part seems a bit weak. The reader should not be left in the computer slot during transport.

Comments about Lexar Professional ExpressCard CompactFlash Reader:

I purchased this reader, along with some CF cards that were on a good promotion. It's nice & compact for travel. I'd like to find a little Pelican case to slip it in though, to keep it safe during pack-up & transport. It should not be left connected to the laptop during transport - the connection point between the metal insert sleeve and the plastic housing is too flimsy.

I did spend a fair bit of time trying to get it to fit in my machine, only to realise I was trying to stuff it in the wrong slot. Duh!!

All in all, it reads super quick, and is easy to use.

I used a bunch of USB 2.0 readers and They have always messed up my cards. With this pci express version, I can keep my FireWire connected by itself and have a super fast reader. It's so much better than the USB drives. Only downside is that when I do upgrade to a new Mac, I won't be able to use it anymore. Still, it's an amazing reader.

I bought this because I was replacing a very old USB 2.0 card reader. This reader is much, much faster than the old reader. Super easy to use. Easy to store and transport. Since it uses my express card slot (something I never used before I bought this) it frees up my USB spaces for my externals. Highly recommend purchasing if you are looking for a faster way to upload photos from your CF cards.

Comments about Lexar Professional ExpressCard CompactFlash Reader:

As semi-prefessional photographers, we purchased this card reader due to being sick and tired of battling with slow transfer rates and inconsistent quality of media card readers with USB interfaces.

Setup is a breeze. Make sure you download the latest driver from Lexar before you attempt to use it. Transfer speeds were consistently well over 130 Mb/s on our Macbook Pros (late-2008 and early 2010). Ultimately your transfer speeds will be limited to the speed class of Compact Flash (CF) you have. Your Desktop menubar (on Mac OS) will have an icon where you can "power off" the card reader to eject the Lexar from the ExpressCard slot.

Design is good, the Lexar's black plastic section clears our Speck hardshell clear case protector on the late 2008 Macbook Pro by a good 5mm and is one of the few ExpressCard media interfaces that physically hold a lot more of the CF card when inserted.

The only design concern is at the point where the plastic case meets the stainless steel. There seems to be some flexure at this point, and incorrect storage or too much rough handling upon inserting or ejecting into your laptop might cause it to snap. I would not recommend this product if you intent to take it with you on the road, unless you have a hardshell case to put it into.

Suggest a Thunderbolt media reader (when they become more readily available!) if you want both high speed and ruggedness.

After moving my Aperture library to an external hard drive I was forced to load new photos via USB. Painfully slow after being used to the FireWire 800 connection. Using this product via the Express Slot (which I had never before used) enabled swift loading of new photos, even faster than the FireWire 800 route. So very nice.

Comments about Lexar Professional ExpressCard CompactFlash Reader:

My FireWire Compact Flash Reader quit working and they are not available any more so I bought this item.
I downloaded the Quick Start Guide from Lexar site and just followed the instructions and it worked great no problems at all and It is much faster down loading my raw file photos.

Comments about Lexar Professional ExpressCard CompactFlash Reader:

This product will dump an 8GB 60mb card in less than 4 minutes. There are a bunch of bad reviews on this product regarding kernal panic and such. I'm pretty positive they just fixed those issues in the latest driver update, as I have not experienced any problems.

Get this if you have an express slot. It will save you tons of time!
