The good:
- Sharp at all focal lengths even at f2.8 wide open.
- Fast and accurate autofocus.
- Quiet and very useful OS (optical stabilizer).
- Good and solid built quality.
- Both autofocus and OS remain active with both 1.4X and 2X teleconverters.
- A bit lighter than expected.

The bad:
- PRICE!!! Pretty much double the price of the previous 70-200mm f2.8 lens.
- Longer than its predecessor, which makes it VERY HARD to fit into backpacks where the previous model slips right in.
- Still no weather sealing (on a top of the line pro lens).
- Dual lens-hood not practical at all.

The lens is very-very sharp with excellent (!!!) image quality! DO NOT believe otherwise, regardless what kind of a review you read from a "pro" website! They are biased and completely wrong! The one thing I'm not certain to be a good idea; that the zoom ring is now in front of the focus ring, which takes some time to get used to, and creates a potential for accidental manual override of the focus ring while zooming, which may result in blurry images. This however, is only a possibility, which never happened to me so far.

The dual lens-hood solution is only practical if you are in a situation where your really, and I mean, REALLY need the extended hood to prevent unwanted reflections, but other than that, I would not recommend it. It is cumbersome and for me, pretty much useless, so I never use it at all.

The most important features, such as: the brand new OS and the brand new lens elements, most certainly deliver the "goods"! The images are beautiful, the colors, tone, sharpness, even wide open at f2.8 are absolutely fantastic!

So if you want a brand new design, new elements, great OS, fast autofocus in a pro-line lens, this is the one! It is an excellent, excellent lens, which I highly recommend!

So, go and get it (if you can afford it).

"NEW YORK" before me is right about quite a few things, but I had a big exception in my experience. I shot for 2 weeks using my Nikon D300 in France after getting the lens a month ago. I wasn't happy with the sharpness of my images shot at f2.8. I found the results way too soft. Sharpness at the focal lengths I used was much better stopped down to something like f4 or even f5.6 for example. I proved that with quite a few shots. This lens is an improvement over previous Sigma 70-200 versions, but for $1700 it falls short of the Nikkor 70-200 VRII by a lot when it comes to sharpness at wide open apertures. For that reason I dropped my rating.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

I have been covering a College Summer league baseball team with an older 80-200 f/2.8 lens since May 2014. Due to lighting conditions and the used of 800 to 2000 ISO that was being used to stop the action of a runner sliding into home plate or stealing second base. The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM has allowed me to capture the action being handed held.
The only drawback is the auto focus does not work on the 1. 7x or 2x telcovener but will work on manual to give the extra telephoto boost.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

I have been saving for a 70-200 lens for the past 18 months reading reviews on Nikon, Sigma and Tamron. Based on what I read and results, comments of others that own the lenses and an evaluation of the cost/benefit by price I chose the Sigma for my Nikon D610. After two weeks of use I couldn't be happier with my choice. The Nikon would have been great but I didn't want to spend the extra $1,000 after looking at some others results. I have shot over 1,000 images of baseball, many with the addition of the 1.4x teleconverter I purchased as well, and the images are sharp with great contrast. The focusing was very fast with no issues on back focusing that I had read about. Yes, this lens is heavy and took some getting use too, and more push ups every day, but that is what I expected when I decided to purchase a fast telephoto zoom. I am going to start shooting more portratits in the coming months. My conclusion after the first two weeks is - buy it! It is a great value with very comprobale results to the Nikon and it leaves you money left over for other equipment you may need.

This lens is such a great buy. My boyfriend and I always purchase from B&H Photo and we wouldn't think of going anywhere else. The lens came in a great padded bag to pack the lens away in complete with a strap for easy travel. I am very happy with my purchase!

Lens is takt sharp on my D600. I am very pleased with this lens. The only reason I did not give this lens 5 stars is due to the refocus that seems to happen each time i slightly depress the shutter without changing composition? Not sure what thats about but still great pictures.

Just got this lens today from B&H, very nice built, new lens cap/tripod collar design, little heavy, it must had nice glasses inside. mounted on my D800e, it has rear AF at first, so needed to fine tune to +17, works perfect now, sharp and fast AF. Will use this lens instead of my Nikkor 28-300mm F3.5-5.6 too dark to zoom in low light. Will post more results later after try out....

          Great alternative to Nikon brand

          By Jason

          from Texas

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

Quick focus, tack sharp, fast aperture, OS works superbly. I have no legitimate complaints about this product. This lens delivered beyond my expectations. With the addition of this lens, my bag is now half sigma. Added benifit to the lens, it feels significantly lighter than the Nikon version, thus my arm isn't shot after shooting all evening. Drawbacks... Although it feels solid in hand, it is not rugged nor weather sealed. This will cause some worry for outdoor sport shooting In humid conditions as dew points are met at evening games. The edges seem negligently soft at at each end of the range. Doesn't matter to me as focus is center frame and the AF is sharp. the lack of rugged construction, the lack of an AF limiter, and lack of weather sealing isn't enough for me to spill the extra dough for a Nikon lens. I'll watch the weather and take care of my new spectacular lens.

Our kids are getting to the ages that their sport games (lacrosse and football) are in the evenings under lights. we needed a lens that would still capture those action shots in the low light conditions. It pairs up nicely with our Nikon D50. Next purchase is a Sigma 2x Teleconverter.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

Bought this lens mainly for shooting sports in low light conditions: soccer & football under the lights, and wrestling in darkened gyms under spotlights. The results so far in shooting wrestling have been better than I expected.

Being able to use a max aperture of 2.8 really helps bringing in detail in low light conditions. While still using a relatively high ISO, I'm now able to use a much higher shutter speed than when using my Nikon 55-300 f4.5-5.6 lens, which has helped considerably in reducing motion blur. Another advantage is the great bokeh, enabling the subjects to be isolated from the background. The lens focuses fast and sharp, even under the fast moving conditions of the sport and hand-holding the camera. Focus is fast, sharp and accurate. Haven't experienced the least bit of delay in focus. The lens is solidly built and substantial.

The only downside is its weight (which should be expected), as when coupled with a Nikon D7000 and MB-D11 vertical grip, the arms will grow weary after a long day without the use of a monopod.

At half the price of the Nikon equivalent, this lens is a superb value. I can't recommend it enough, just go get it!

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

I am very happy with this lens. The construction is superb.

I have taken a few shots using this lens so far and I find the images tack sharp. I have this lens attached to my D800 and I love the images that came out of it. Color rendition is accurate. Auto-focus is fast. Simply awesome!!

I have own this for a very short while but I am certain that I'm going to keep this for a long long time.

Definitely can't beat the price too, compared to Nikon's. Nothing wrong with buying Nikon's 70-200mm if you are a professional or money is no object. For me, I'm neither and this Sigma fits the bill just right. Thank you Sigma.

I would definitely recommend this lens to anyone who wants to own a 70-200mm f/2.8 but money is a concern buying the brand name Nikon one.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

My lens just arrived three weeks behind schedule due to ice storms and freezing temperatures in t he area. I took it out the box and it was packaged very well with it's own carrying case. The lens feels and looks very well made with attention to detail. You can not use the zoom ring or focus ring if the hood is placed on backwards for transporting or if not needed for the shot. You must take the hood off the lens completely or install it. The lens is camparitively light compared to the competition.

I will use the lens for portraits, sports and architecture sessions. I am a little confused about the APS-C adapter but I will figure it out. For the money it is of my opinion that this is a great lens.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

As soon as I received this lens, I took it out of the box and started shooting. I shot a local middle school's basketball game and the school liked the quality of the photos and posted them on their website. I am very pleased with the lens.
