The good:
- Sharp at all focal lengths even at f2.8 wide open.
- Fast and accurate autofocus.
- Quiet and very useful OS (optical stabilizer).
- Good and solid built quality.
- Both autofocus and OS remain active with both 1.4X and 2X teleconverters.
- A bit lighter than expected.

The bad:
- PRICE!!! Pretty much double the price of the previous 70-200mm f2.8 lens.
- Longer than its predecessor, which makes it VERY HARD to fit into backpacks where the previous model slips right in.
- Still no weather sealing (on a top of the line pro lens).
- Dual lens-hood not practical at all.

The lens is very-very sharp with excellent (!!!) image quality! DO NOT believe otherwise, regardless what kind of a review you read from a "pro" website! They are biased and completely wrong! The one thing I'm not certain to be a good idea; that the zoom ring is now in front of the focus ring, which takes some time to get used to, and creates a potential for accidental manual override of the focus ring while zooming, which may result in blurry images. This however, is only a possibility, which never happened to me so far.

The dual lens-hood solution is only practical if you are in a situation where your really, and I mean, REALLY need the extended hood to prevent unwanted reflections, but other than that, I would not recommend it. It is cumbersome and for me, pretty much useless, so I never use it at all.

The most important features, such as: the brand new OS and the brand new lens elements, most certainly deliver the "goods"! The images are beautiful, the colors, tone, sharpness, even wide open at f2.8 are absolutely fantastic!

So if you want a brand new design, new elements, great OS, fast autofocus in a pro-line lens, this is the one! It is an excellent, excellent lens, which I highly recommend!

So, go and get it (if you can afford it).

Purchased for the speed, and medium telephoto range, and price after reviewing reports on Tamron, Sigma, and a couple of Nikon entries. I already have a Sigma 50-500 lens that I am quite happy with, but the particular lens I received had signicant back focus, particularly over its mid-range and tended to be less sharp than I wanted. Rather than swap for another Sigma lens, I swollowed hard and chose a Nikon 70-200 VR II.

Great value in a quality lens. Used for sports photography, mainly NASCAR. Quick focus, just a good lens. Of course it is a little heavy, but all lenses of this size and quality are a little heavy.

I used the lens for a graduation ceremony to get closer to the stage than my 24-70mm could. The photos so far have been sharp and clear. Like any lens that size is it heavier when not using a tripod but that is expected.

Its a pretty good lens, does its job, I use it for portraits and landscape photography

The reason I took off a star because the stabilization is as good say a canon lens, the stabilization looks a little warpy. Same goes with the autofocus.

The reason why I took a star off is because first of all the stabilization is weak, (looks a little warpy). If you compare it to a canon lens there is a big difference. Same goes with the auto focus.

    Great fast lens

    By Ray

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

I bought this lens for low light conditions to be used for football game half time drill team pictures. I shoot high speed continuous and needed to freeze action shots of various kicks and jumps. This lens was just the ticket to capture incredible pictures. The parents were amazed at my shots compared to theirs for clarity. Great glass for the money.

This will be used for professional photos for weddings, engagements and senior portraits. I think it's great for a zoom lens at low light conditions. The blog provided at B & H is very helpful. Better than talking over the phone because then you have the information in writing. Also, it gives the person in communication with you to research your questions. I don't care for how much it weighs or the length of the lens. It is not easy to carry.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

This sigma 70-200 f2.8 has lighting fast focus. I use it on my D700. I keep my thumb on the back focus button and with the OS turned on the lens is the ticket for razor sharp pictures. I have the older version of it without OS and there is a world of difference. I would recommend it to anyone on the planet. Been shooting sports and wildlife for years and this lens is a life savor. I hardly leave home without it. Buy it you will love it.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

Being a grandpa, I get to shoot a lot of pictures of the grandchildren playing sports on Saturdays. Now that I own a Nikon D800 camera, I needed a lens that could deliver great action photos. When I owned a D300, I used a Nikon 70-200mm lens so I knew that I wanted a similar lens but without the big price tag. I did my homework and found the Sigma 70-200mm lens for FX cameras to be a top candidate as a viable solution at a reasonable price. However, I was still hesitant about buying a third party lens. After reading review after review by B&H Photo customers, I felt that I should trust their knowledge of ownership. Glad I did! My photos are crisp and clear with a pleasing bokeh. Best of all is the fact that the Optical Stabilizer works great for my aging hands. Almost every photo is a keeper. I have been interested in photography since 1965 and owned almost every Nikon and Zeiss lens that fit Nikon cameras through the years. The Sigma 70-200mm zoom lens won't disappoint you.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

I have owned the previous version of this lens, non os, and I have used the Nikon 70-200, version 1 and 2. For what I needed from this kind of lens it just didn't make sense to buy the Nikon, so, I went with the Sigma once again. My copy is sharp at f/2.8 and at all focal lengths.

I do find that it will hunt a little bit in very dim light and the af is not as fast as the Nikon - the Sigma does NOT have slow af, it's just that the Nikon is very fast and accurate and TWICE the price.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

I purchased this lens instead of the Nikon, and I have yet to be disappointed. The only discernible difference is the quality of the glass, this one already has as a very minor scratch, meanwhile my similarly treated Nikon lenses that I have owned for longer do not. It could be a coincidence, either way, I am still very happy with the lens, especially considering it is half the price. I do a lot of concert shooting with it, both photo and video. It handles low light well, although the auto focus is basically useless in low light, so I keep it on manual. I also always keep it on a monopod, it is pretty heavy without it.

I mainly work with prime lens but sometimes I need more reach. I purchased this lens to replace an older sigma version and after testing it I am pleased with the results. It is better than the older version in both focus speed and sharpness. The only negative is that in very dim light it will hunt a little bit.
