The HSM is quiet. The optics of this lens is OK. I compared the bokeh of this lens with my Pentax DA* 50-135mm at f=2.8, the Pentax one's bokeh is significantly smoother than this Sigma. The biggest problem I had with this lens is the slow focus at 50mm when aperture is opened to 2.8. I have to shot a indoor wedding, the focus speed of this lens for sure cannot help me catch the most important moments for my clients. I return it in exchange for a FA 77mm limited.

Nice lens.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs W/APS-C Sensors:

This is a sharp lens and a good option if you don't need WR.
It is fairly small for the range and speed it provides.
I give it 4 stars. It would have been 5 if Sigma had made it a WR lens.

Great lens at a great price!

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs W/APS-C Sensors:

So far a very good all around lens. Quick focus. Images are very good. Lens cap can be a little tricky putting back on when hood is on. B&H offered great service & price and quick delivery. There are slightly better lenses available, but at much higher costs...
All depends what you need.

I have never spent a lot of time with wide lens but this one has opened a whole new experience for me. Compact with a quick zoom, excellent images and just plain fun to use for interior shots and scenery. Need more time to fully evaluate but seems to be quite as good as my other Pentax lenses.

Great lens at a great price.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs W/APS-C Sensors:

Picked this one up during a holiday special. Just cannot justify spending the kind of money some of these lenses can fetch for a hobby I like to partake in here and there. Lens is fast, images are sharper than the finest cheddar money can buy, AF is fast, and I didn't have to refinance my house to buy it. This was the perfect addition to my small but growing collection, was really looking for a solid walk around lens, and this is it. Aside from the times when I'm doing Milky Way photography with my 16mm f/2.0 lens, this will be attached to my Pentax K-5 IIS.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs W/APS-C Sensors:

This is a great zoom to replace your kit lens. It's wide angle to short telephoto is perfect for landscapes, to street photography, to portraits. It's sharp all the way across the focal length, but there is some noticeable pin cushion distortion at 17mm but is easily fixed in post.

Great lens construction, silent autofocus is a huge huge huge bonus. Those screw drive motors are noisy and annoying. Though it's not completely silent, it's 10x quieter than screw drive.

Lens is easy to hold. Depending on your perspective, the zoom direction might be reversed. You have to twist the zoom ring left to zoom instead of the usual right. The lens hood is a great bonus as this lens suffers from flaring a lot. The case is a very nice touch too, I like that Sigma includes cases with their lens.

I like to think of this lens as a bunch of primes in one zoom. It has prime like image quality. Really nice lens, I would definitely recommend. It's similar to the Pentax DA* 16-50, but at half the price and even better. Only advantage that the DA* has is the weather sealing, which i sometimes wish this lens had.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs W/APS-C Sensors:

HSM are quiet and fast on my K-3 body; a great lens when compared to similar offerings elsewhere. Aperture of f2.8 was indeed quick, but not quick enough, but please don't blame Sigma! My tastes are begining to lean toward the prime lens. I had to think long and hard about keeping this gem. I ended up using B and H's gracious policy to return, so I can fund pricier primes. Based upon Sigma build quality and price? I will definitely consider their prime offerings; they seem to make nice stuff for Pentax, wish they made more!

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs W/APS-C Sensors:

I've only had this lens a couple weeks and have only been able to take test shots of pets and family/friends. Thus far I'm extraordinarily pleased with its performance, especially considering the price. This was my upgrade from the standard 18-55mm pentax kit lens. The Sigma produces very sharp images with no chromatic aberration (until you blow-up the pictures to full size on a giant monitor and even then its very faint). I love having the large aperture through the entire zoom and surprisingly feel comfortable shooting wide open and can expect sharp images. Great for indoor lighting events. Macro performance was also surprisingly strong. The only thing this lens is missing is a weather-sealed construction.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs W/APS-C Sensors:

Over the weekend I really put this lens to the test on my Pentax K-3. I had to shoot a First Communion in a church not well lit, the second was a baby shower inside a room with very large windows on three sides of the room on a sunny day!! Lots of glare here.

In both situations this lens worked brilliantly!

First - the lens is so very responsive and QUIET!!
Focus was smooth & quick. Of course what matters most is the end result. The photos were clear, crisp and amazing! And that made me very happy.

This is my first non-Pentax lens. I am now a HUGE SIGMA fan!!! If you're on the fence about this lens, don't be. This SIGMA lens is all that it says it is and more!

Had to get my camera & the lens in focus with each other, once that was done it has produced great pictures. It is very quiet & fast on the auto focus, but tends to re-focus before I shot.
Other than that it is a great lens and produces nice pics.

Sigma did a good job. It is an excellent lens.
              Thank you Sigma.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs W/APS-C Sensors:

I researched fast wide zoom options for a while. In reading the reviews on the various choices for this type of lens (Pentx vs. Sigma vs. Tamron), it seemed like this was, overall, the best buy and possibly the best lens.

I have been happily surprised with just how good it really is, both as a versatile walkaround and with IQ in general. This lens rivals primes in some shots, is very versatile, and is a great value at half the cost of the Pentax lens. Recommended!

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs W/APS-C Sensors:

I bought this lens because the Pentax DA* 16-50 arrived defective (not from BH). The focus was stuck at infinity, manual focus ring would turn but the elements did not move.

I would like to have the weather resistance but was not willing to play the Pentax 16-50 lottery again.

So I decided to try this sigma and after a few weeks of use am very impressed. It is such a handy lens for family events! It is fast enough to easily use inside without a flash and going to the wide end it works wonderfully for landscapes. The sharpness is crisp, colors are true and have not needed adjustment in post processing, and vignetting has not been an issue.

Bottom line is that my standard go-to kit is my K5, this lens and my trusty DA* 50-135. This is a great combination that is easy to walk around with (just need a lens pouch and the camera on a strap) and you are ready for just about anything.

This lens received very good reviews from Pentax Forums. Fast AF, excellent IQ make it a perfect replacement for your kit lens. Since I already own a compliment of 77mm filters for my DA12-24mm it was an easy decision to select this lens. Its my first Sigma and I'm very happy with my purchase. Of course, BH was great to deal with as always.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs W/APS-C Sensors:

The HSM is quiet. The optics of this lens is OK. I compared the bokeh of this lens with my Pentax DA* 50-135mm at f=2.8, the Pentax one's bokeh is significantly smoother than this Sigma. The biggest problem I had with this lens is the slow focus at 50mm when aperture is opened to 2.8. I have to shot a indoor wedding, the focus speed of this lens for sure cannot help me catch the most important moments for my clients. I return it in exchange for a FA 77mm limited.
