I use this lens for the ultra wide shots. I use it in low light, tight spaces, and large areas. Very versatile lens. It has a manual focus override, and is built solid. Image quality is sharp from 8mm to 16mm at f/5.6, and diffraction is not noticeable until f/14. Hand held is easy with the ultra wide in low light even at f/5.6 1/8second. AF is accurate, fast, and quiet.

The bad: it is a ultra wide, and requires ultra wide angle skills to make the lens perform in many ways. ISO performance is on par with any DX lens. Also, this lens is compact but heavy.

The Sigma 8-16mm is one of the best ultra wide angles for DX, and I use it way more than I would like. I also purchased a Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 to complement this lens. They are a great pair.

Solid, well built lens. Bulbous front element well protected by an integral lens hood and supplied storage sleeve. Coverage at 8mm on the Nikon D7100 is amazing. Very pleased with the overall sharpness of the lens.

This is my main lens on the D7100. Even for low light indoors and video. The slow aperture properties allow less diffraction at smaller aperture settings like f/13 to f/22. Thus making it great for huge depth of field landscape shots. And, pulling small details from distant objects. Also, the bulbous front element prevents a lot of glare.

Used mainly for outdoor and landscape/architectural photography. I can say that when I received the lens I was already impressed by the build quality, and after checking the optics, all I can say is WOW! This is a VERY SHARP lens even wide open and even at widest angle. Totally impressed and no regrets at all. After using the Nikon 16 85, I wanted a wider lens. At 16mm equivalents, the SIGMA is much sharper than the Nikons 16mm!

I call this lens my "Money Lens" because I tend to sell prints shot through my 8-16mm lens. This is a wonderful lens for landscape photography. The lens has a great light gathering ability and does a great job taking long exposure shots at night.
The lens is well made and comes with a lens cover that slides on over the end.

This is an update for my last post.
of all my lenses, this one has dead on accurate exposure in low light and bright light. Also, lens glare/flare performance is one of the best. I can shoot into the sun without much glare.

The Lens also has the ability to allow your camera to maximize the dynamic range of the image. Ideal for DX cameras with high dynamic range sensors. Great for landscape and night photography. IMO this lens is worth the money.

Comments about Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens for Select Nikon DSLRs:

After using this lens for a couple of years on my Canon bodies, I had to get a copy for my Nikon bodies. With lens correction postprocessing, it'll produce up close poster size prints. Distortion free, vignet free, CA free, corner-to-corner sharp at f/10-f/11 apertures. Even wide open, you get good central sharpness with only a bit of corner softness visible at gallery print size.

So why only 4 stars? Like many of my Sigma lenses, I notice a soft spot off center that appears to be symptomatic of slight decentering or possibly a molded lens element fault. But only on this Nikon mount copy, not the Canon mount one. It almost disappears at f/8.

And, in general for the current generation of high resolution DSLR's, focus accuracy is a challenge. This seems to be the case especially for ultrawide angle lenses. So, as expected, I have to either use live view AF or manually focus. The good news is that once you determine the correct focus setting, the DOF makes it almost unnecessary to move it for any situation other than macro. Set and forget.

Comments about Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens for Select Nikon DSLRs:

There was a time when I would only buy Nikon and perhaps limited Tokina lenses. But recently, it seems Sigma has been making some awfully good lenses in the DX market segment.

Thing is, Nikon (and Canon for that matter) do not seem to be too interested in manufacturering premium DX lenses - with the 17-55 f/2.8 and 35mm f/1.8 about the only ones you could call "premium".

So those of use that want premium lenses have to go to the 3rd party market.

I have two such ultra wide angle lenses, this Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5~5.6 and the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8.

Like all ultra wide lenses - especially in the short focal lengths required for DX use - there is a significant amount of perspective distortion. So you have to be a bit creative in composing for this lens - which is no different than my Tokina 11-16.

But this review is not about the Tokina.

The Sigma lens @ 8mm seems to be some 30% wider than the Tokina @ 11mm. So I use the lenses as follows: If I want the most in a landscape or wide view, I'll go for the Sigma, but if I am looking for low light capability - especially inside of a museum where flash photography is not allowed - then the Tokina gets the job.

So I really see both of these lenses as mutually compatible, with one excelling at wide views, and the other at low light.

I really cannot find anything wrong with this lens. It is not an EX lens, but it is every bit as well built as my Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8, which is an EX lens.

The lens also seems to be pretty sharp, even in the corners.

There is no provision for a filter, but other than an ND or graduated ND filter, I cannot think of why you would need one. And I suppose you could "jury rig" a Cokin filter in front of the lens if needed.

The lens hood is intergal to the lens, and protects the beautiful bulbous lens front element well enough. The bulbous front element is just... cool. We've nicknamed it "HAL"

I do like the integrated lens hood though as it is a smaller diameter than almost any other lens hood I have, which means it fits into my camera bag all that much easier.

You could hit the lens I suppose if you smacked it against a table edge, but I prefer to have my lenses insured rather than buying UV filters for them (my insurance policy is about 1% of value per year... a lot cheaper than a good filter).

Long term is unknown, but I have bought enough lenses that this one just feels like a great lens.

The only downside I suppose is the relatively slow f/4.5, but there is no other DX type lens that can match the 8mm, so I suppose it is this lens or nothing. And as I indicated earlier, I can use my Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 if I need low light capability.

Comments about Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens for Select Nikon DSLRs:

Before I knew the difference between crop and full frame lenses, I picked this up to use with my Nikon D60. It's a great lens for bright, handheld landscapes, but in low light, even the ISO sensitivity of my D7000 struggles. If it's dusk or later, I find myself needing a tripod. In bright light, however, this is fantastic, and being able to have 114 degrees at 8mm is amazing, especially for the price. This camera is also rugged, having taking a small fall onto a floor with a minimal dent to the built-in lens hood.

I bought this mostly for landscape photography, and group shots (I have a very large family) for my Nikon D7000.
I love the ultra wide angle. Composition can be a bit tough at the 8mm range, but I love playing with it and coming up with some funky, fun photos.
No lens filters, but the colors are really outstanding without a filter, don't know if there's some sort of polarizing coating on the lens?
Haven't had this too long, but happy with it so far.

I definitely recommend this lens to anyone. You will love it! One thing that I've been told is that you have to have something in your foreground with this lens. So far, I am enjoying my lens and the results I am getting!

Comments about Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens for Select Nikon DSLRs:

I needed a super wide angle lens and originally purchased the sigma 10-20mm f/3.5. After taking it for a test drive , I wasn't pleased with the overall sharpness of the lens. Not only at the outer edges of the lens but at the focal point!. Out of over 250 pictures I took on the test drive only a handful were "acceptable" in sharpness. Not a good return on work put in. So I returned and read good reviews on the "sharpness consistency" of the 8-16mm. Even though Its not a constant aperture and there is a loss in a stop or so with this 8-16mm lens It is TOTALLY worth it. In my first test drive I got tons of great sharp pictures across the entire photograph. Its my new favorite lens, along with my 70-200mm.
Here are a few example of the quality of this lens. I had to compress these two photos from a 9MB file to below 5MB to upload here, so the original photos I have are even sharper and more vibrant than what you see here.
If you need a super wide lens, you wont regret getting this one!

The Sigma 8mm-16mm for me is perfect. Would be nice if there was a filter attachment available. As far as the ring that the lens cap connects to, no problem . Keep the lens cap and ring together as one unit. I use this lens on a Nikon D7000 and I am very happy with it.
