Being an battery, there isn't a whole lot to say about it. The thing is, if you own a Sony NEX 5, you really need to carry at least one extra battery. These cameras eat electricity the way an Olds 98 went through gas. This isn't necessarily a function of the battey, but more of the camera. The LCD display and the menu jumping consume a lot of power. Another charging unit would be useful as well, to carry in the bag.

The LCD protector kit is also a must-have. For the price, you can't go wrong. Sony is suppossed to be coming out with an adaptor that snaps on the back of the camera, but until they arrive on these shores, this is a good, cheap alternative.

I bought this item as a spare with my Sony a7 earlier this year (Jan 2014). It was identical to the battery that came with my camera. Made in Japan, the label on the battery says that it is "min 1020mAh" and "typ 1080mAh". Regardless, the a7 sucks the power out of these batteries in no-time. If you're shooting all day, you'll probably need at least two fully charged batteries to get through it.Last week (Jul 2014), I bought 5 more batteries using the same B&H part number as before, SONPFW50. The new batteries are different than the originals. They are noticeably lighter in weight and the back says they are rated at 1020mAh. No mention of 1080mAh. And they are made in China, not Japan. I am concerned that they will not maintain a charge as long as the original batteries I bought 6 months ago.I'm disappointed that Sony and B&H have substituted an obviously cheaper product for the same-priced original batteries that I bought earlier this year. At minimum, I think the part number and description should have been updated to reflect the difference.

Extra battery is a necessity

By Essential for your camera

Comments about Sony NP-FW50 Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Battery (1020mAh):

This battery tends to have a short life. It will probably last me a day of shooting. So I had to buy an extra one just in case. I find it a little pricey but it's worth it compared to the fake ones sold on @.

Comments about Sony NP-FW50 Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Battery (1020mAh):

I bought a couple of off brand batteries. They work in the camera for 2 or 3 hours in my Sony A-6000. The brand name Sony battery works longer but still only lasts about half a day, unlike my Nikon SLR which I don't need to change for a whole day.

Comments about Sony NP-FW50 Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Battery (1020mAh):

They are good batteries and so far have preformed just fine. But time will tell. I use them in my Sony A7S for videography. An entire wedding takes me 4 batteries. Hard to say anything else but they are good and they do what they promise.

Comments about Sony NP-FW50 Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Battery (1020mAh):

I always like having a spare battery for my camera for long days/trips/adventures.

I don't think the battery life of these batteries are that great, but I haven't used them for a long enough period of time for a solid verdict yet. I would say that on my first uses it didn't last nearly as long as I would have liked.

I was deciding between the original SONY battery here and those batteries made by third parties. The third party batteries were a lot cheaper and rated well, but I decided not to skimp on such an important accessory for an expensive camera.

I have been burned in the past with off label batteries that are "authorized" re-sellers. I use this battery in my Sony NEX-6 for power hungry applications like Macro and underwater photography and get a couple of hours of use on a full charge. For something as critical as the lifeblood of your camera, don't go with anything less than the best.

Comments about Sony NP-FW50 Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Battery (1020mAh):

I haven't used the battery that much yet, but so far it seems like a regular replacement of the one that is already in the camera. I bought it for our upcoming vacation, but since you actually have to charge the battery INSIDE the camera, I'm not sure how useful it really is. With an external charger, you could recharge one while you use the other one, but as it is, a second battery really only comes in handy when you're away for a long trip without access to electricity. That hasn't happened to me yet, but then at the same time the A6000 doesn't have the best battery life, so who knows, it might come in handy after all.
