I have always used only Nikon brand lenses, and it took a leap of faith to spend this much money for "non-Nikon" glass. But my worries were for nothing. Wow! This lens is extremely sharp! I absolutely love it! It offers me all the versatility that the comparable Nikon would, but at many hundreds of dollars less. Like any 85mm lens at f/1.4 or similar wide aperture, the depth of field is barely a couple of inches. So attention to precision focusing and choice of f-stop are extremely critical. IMO, you cannot go wrong with this lens! I'm completely satisfied.

purchased jan 2011. after only light use autofocus motor failed in June. returned to sigma and it was rapidly repaired, back with me in less than a week. now focuses fast and sharp again, but early failure is a concern. would probable wait for nikon 85 AF-S if to do over as have not had this issue with any of the nikon lenses

Comments about Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens For Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

This is probably the best value 85mm f/1.4 for Nikon shooters. I shoot in low light a lot, so large apertures are important to me. I've only owned Nikon lenses before this, and it took a lot for me to actually purchase this lens. So far, it performs better than expected; I rented one to compare with the Nikon 85 f/1.4G, and the difference was imperceptible. I'm especially happy because the one I purchased actually seems sharper than the one I rented. And no AF fine-tuning was necessary for my copy. I wanted to wait and see if Sigma would come out with an Art version of this lens, but the new Art lenses have been larger and heavier than their predecessors, and I'm not interested in heavier gear. The quality I get out of this version is more than I need. Not only is this the best value, in my opinion, but it is just about the best quality you can get. For the price, it was a no-brainer for me.

Comments about Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens For Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

My goal: Bought this for portraits mainly and (yes) landscape too

        Pros:
        1) bokeh is very pleasing, no-not like film, but like...well...digital (no, really, it's fine, it's great ok?)
        2) AF is fast in anything brighter than very dim light
        3) it's really pretty solid (of course, it's a prime, and from Sigma's EX line
        4) I believe it has out-resolved my 16MP D7000, which of course was the goal

        Cons:
        1) as far as color rendition, I'm not sure that colors are as good as other portrait lenses, but having little experience with the other portrait lenses, I'm still confident that I can get the results I want, but you understand what I mean (I bought this as an alternative to the higher quality, pricier portrait lenses
        2) there is some (relatively minor) CA wide open so be careful about that

        Conclusion:
I'm really glad I invested in this lens and would recommend it to all but the most discerning artists. I say this because I have not pushed this lens too hard yet, so I don't know. But IMHO, I have an eye for realism. (As far as that goes, my camera is really the limiting factor due to its limited dynamic range. The lens is fine.) But this is still a limited review. Do I still want the old 105 or 135mm f/2 DC? See my above comment. If I can get this lens to disappoint me, then...

So far IT HAS NOT DISAPPOINTED me for the price. IF YOU NEED A LENS WITH THESE SPECIFICATIONS, YOU DON"T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT BUILD QUALITY, unless you just need a "heavy duty" metal lens. It's plenty tough for me.
I am thinking of getting an extension tube to expand the capabilities of this lens. Note: I have not used any filters with it yet, but looking forward to a ND for outdoor portraits.

Thanks for reading the really long review.

Comments about Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens For Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

I bought this primarily for indoor sporting events (i.e., volleyball, basketball) where the lighting can be poor and you are close to the action. I shoot primarily with a Nikon D600. The only complaint is the focus is a little slower than I had hoped for, but it certainly helps with dim lighting that one sometimes finds in gyms. Slow focus means more out of focus shots. Still I get plenty of good shots, so I am pleased overall.

Comments about Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens For Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

I am a professional photographer and gallery owner on the Oregon Coast. Like many of you I had read the many negatives from disappointed buyers of this lens as to autofocus issues. And I had the same unfortunate experience with the 50mm f/1.4 that many had had - significant front-focusing at the larger apertures and closer distances. I returned it and decided that the 85mm focal length suited me better, and so with considerable trepidation went ahead and ordered it. When it arrived, in a minute I was putting it through some careful autofocus tests, all of which it passed brilliantly! What a relief and a reassurance that it is possible to get a cood copy. I don't think a buyer should have to jump through hoops returning an item multiple times or having it calibrated - it should work properly straight off. At any rate I look forward to applying this classic and specialized portrait lens to portraits of the landscape and natural history and hope that it will elicit a fresh approach and some original creativity on my part. The separation and bokeh are admirable. I'm also using extension tubes and the focus has remained accurate in this "macro" mode. Hey, an f/1.4 macro! Oh and I gave it four stars simply because I don't believe in giving any product a perfect score. Is there such a thing as a perfect lens? For example the focus ring on this one is nowhere close to the buttery, liquid feel of lenses of yore. I'm happy tho' and hope to produce some good things with it.

Comments about Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens For Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

This is a great lens for portraits and details. I use this instead of my 70-200 nikon zoom for portraits - the 85 has lovely creamy bokeh and is very light, plus is focuses pretty well, even when tracking. Only (slight) downside is that it can't focus closer than about 2 feet and I have accidentally hit the M/AF switch a few times and knocked it into manual focus mode.

Good lens and I got it thinking it would be an upgrade from nikon 1.8 however it wasn't, I didn't see a difference in bokeh/ background and it was a little soft at 1.4. Therefore this lens didn't work for me but I'm trying a different sigma lens and hoping it would be a keeper

I purchased this product for the Nikon mount due to the price, and great online reviews. I am using it on my D200.

I have been using the lens for a month now, and can say it is very sharp even at 1.4. best results by 2.0. AF is fast and accurate. I have had no issues with hunting or erratic AF as some other reviewers have had. Bokeh is dreamy =)

Complaints: As with most of these lenses: some purple fringing wide open.

              Lens hood could fit better

              Wish it had VR

Bottom Line: This is an amazing lens for the price!

I was a little nervous when buying an off brand for my Nikon. We have a sigma for another camera, and love it so we figured we would give it a try. I absolutely love this lens!
I recently used this lens for an engagement session, and found the focus to be spot on, and the bokeh was wonderful.
This was a wonderful addition to my kit, and will be using it on a regular basis!

At the time I had a Nikon 85mm 1.8 that gave me great results but judging from the experience of a Sigma 50mm 1.4 that I had before (sharpest lens that I have seen) I decided to buying this one. It is a great lens, heavy, vey well constructed, a huge piece of glass but comparing the sharpness with my 50mm 1.4, not as sharp as expected. Don't get me wrong, it is a very sharp lens but not as sharp as my 50mm 1.4 that it is sharp as a razor blade, even at f/1.4. It is a little bit slow on the AF at low light setting. Overall, it is a great lens, I recommended.

Comments about Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens For Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

I use this lens mainly for portraits. Initially I was hesitant to purchase a third party lens, wanting to stick with Nikon products. I am glad that I made this purchase! The shots taken so far have been wonderful to say the least.

This is my second favorite lens for portrait after Nikon 70-200. Super sharp and works very well in low light situations. I played with Nikon version before I buy Sigma and both lenses will give a very close results that you can not differentiate between them.
Save some money and go with Sigma.
