If you don't have the dough for a 70-200 2.8 and you want to shoot daylight action or wildlife, this is your go-to lens! Here are few things I can point out based on my experience with it so far:

- Lens is quite sharp at all apertures, but is sharpest around f8.

- Auto focus is quick. I've heard others say it's not, but in my experience thus far, it performs great.

- Picture begins to soften a bit after 200 mm, but it's still pretty sharp all the way out to 300 mm.

- Bokeh is good. Starts to lose the smoothness after 200 mm, but is still more than acceptable all the way too 300 mm.

- Color and contrast are wonderful.

- This isn't the best choice for indoor shooting. You can get good portrait-type shots of non-moving subjects, but don't expect to shoot indoor soccer or basketball without a high ISO. And by high, I mean 3200 or more with REALLY good lighting.

- The lens is lightweight. You don't feel like your camera is front heavy, even when zoomed to 300 mm. I should note that I have an a77 with the battery grip, so for me, it might be just that the camera is balanced out because of the weight of the body and grip. But it still feels lightweight anyway.

- The lens hood is HUGE. Not a big deal really, but if you use the hood it can (and has) caused a few of my photos to have a thin shadow on them. Just be mindful of where the sun is :)

I gave this lens 5 stars, despite the "cons". I can't knock it for not having the performance of a 2.8, since it isn't one. I knew going in that this would be my go-to lens for daylight action shooting and for that purpose, it performs like it's more expensive counterparts and has earned 5 stars, IMO. You could spend twice as much and get the Sony version, but if you're on a budget like I am, you can't go wrong with this lens. I shot a Lacrosse game and it did not disappoint (see attached images).

As the heading says. It is a good lens as it has the sonic motor, good image quality, but they do not give you the image stabilizer and they are charging you for it.
For Canon and Nikon they provide it but not for Sony. They are saying that since Sony has it built into the camera, then they should not give it to you BUT THEY ARE CHARING YOU FOR IT.
I returned the lens.
So it is OVER PRICED and the Image stabilizer is very important for a 300mm lens.

Comments about Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di USD Telephoto Zoom Lens for Sony Digital SLR Cameras:

This lens is advertised to use for indoor/outdoor sports, portraits etc., but it is not that great for low light and fast moving objects. It really is a 5.6 lens, so it requires bright sunlight or you have to increase ISO substantially. Or use a tripod. The auto focus keeps searching and is rather slow. At 300mm it is very soft, details get fuzzy and the useful range is 70-200mm.
I tested it with a full frame Sony camera and compared it with an over 10 year old 28-300mm 3.5-6.3 Tamron lens, and a legendary 80-200mm 2.8 Minolta lens. The new 70-300mm Tamron is sharper and has more accurate color reproduction than the older 28-300mm Tamron lens. The new lens is made in China and the old lens was made in Japan. The new lens weights about 200 grams more. Compared to the white 2.8 Minolta lens, there is no match. The old Minolta lens has faster, more accurate focusing, much sharper details, beautiful bokeh and great color reproduction and internal zoom, but it is very heavy, about 1.4 kg and comes in its own hard case.
So, if you are on a budget and don't plan to print large prints or shoot sports in low light, this is a good lens. It is rather light to carry around if weight is a concern. I got some good shots of backyard wildlife and flying birds in bright light. Personally I don't like having the focusing ring closest to the camera and would prefer the zoom ring close instead. The filter size is odd, 62mm.

Comments about Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di USD Telephoto Zoom Lens for Sony Digital SLR Cameras:

Bought this lens for my Sony Alpha 65. I haven't used it a lot, but the difference in picture quality over the kit lens is obvious. This last weekend, I took shots directly into the sun as it was rising. I tried this with my kit lens, and everything turned out orange, or it wouldn't auto focus at all. The Tamron however just kept focusing even when fully zoomed in on the sun. I was trying to make it not work, and it just kept taking great photos. Can't wait to get some hummingbird shots with it. I love how B&H sent me the link to the Tamron rebate form as well. With a total cost after rebate of $, you'd be foolish not to upgrade your kit lens.

I am very satisfied with upgrading (without mortgaging the farm) from an 18-250 to a 17-70 plus this 70-300. 18-250 tries to do too much and makes sacrifices along the way, the two lenses, particularly the 70-300 is much sharper, takes in more light, and has a smoother action. Unless you go for one of the monster long lenses and buy the donkey to lug it around for you, this is the right lens.

I waited awhile to review this lens since I wanted time to really use it before jumping to conclusions on it. Well I have taken close to 3,000 images with it and it has been great! I like shooting animals mostly and for that this lens is great as it is light enough and compact enough (comparatively speaking) to have become my go to lens for lots of various things. There are times I wish I had the longer lens on but with a 24mega Pixel camera I can always crop some. The pictures are very sharp and I never see any fringing but I wish it were a bit for faster but for the money with the rebate I can not see how you can do better than this lens and when on a nature hike it sure is nice to have just the one lens with you.

The customer service of B&H and Tamron are excellent.

The aperture is slow so its only good for daylight use but its a substantially lighter than my 70-200 f/2.8.

                Very happy with this purchase.

I purchased this lens to replace my Sigma 50-200mm F/4-5.6 which stopped auto focusing. The difference in build quality was huge. The other significant difference was speed and noise level between the internal motors. This Tamron lens uses a USD motor that is truly almost silent and very quick. I very much appreciate the way "Full Time Manual Focus" which means you can leave it in autofocus and then manually focus the lens without needing to switch in/out of auto mode.

Great zoom lens and IMO a better value than the Sony SAL 70-300G lens. I only had the SAL 18-135 kit lens to compare this to, but the Tamron does not disappoint. The zoom is great for my zoo trips and it is sharp with good colors. It is worth the $[$] ($[$] plus $100 rebate) that I paid and I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone. The only negative thing I can say is the zoom ring is stiff, but I hope that it will loosen up over time. On the bright side, there is no lens creep.

ENGLISH: I bought the Tamron SP 70-300 for for my Sony SLT-A99 two weeks ago, but already has to realize that in the range of 70 to 300mm this lens is actually better than the Tamron 28 300 I've ever had ... What surprised me was the speed of the focus motor is almost the same in both lenses (fast!), but the Tamron SP 70-300 is obviously much quieter. The appearance is not as luxurious as the Lens Sony SAL70300G, but it seems pretty solid, comfortable and above all it is very beautiful. I also realized that control of chromatic aberrations, vigneting and flare are better managed this Tamron SP 70-300. So far I am very pleased with this purchase.

I am just a hobby photographer and use this lens for capturing sailboats on the water from a distance. Nice weight, great quality, fast and silent focus - good for video work. It does need a lot of light though. I find myself using ISO 400-800 even in bright light to allow for faster shutter speeds. Bottom line is that it is a $[$] lens with great optics and fast focus.

I bought this lens to photo sport bike track days. Have not used it at an event yet but am very impressed with the photos that I've taken of my dogs and horses. It's a little heavy bur that's actually an advantage when shooting video it helps with stability

mostly far away items it is great.
It should have image stabilizer, because I use it on my NEX7 with an expensive adapter.

                  It is quite light

Just the average user who uses their camera on Auto. Takes great pictures, Clear Super Fast and half the price of the comparable Sony.

Very happy with it so far.

So far I've only used it inside. Pics are very sharp. No complaints on color. Where the lighting is not real bright the focusing is on the slow side but at this price I'm not complaining. Tamron SP lenses are always hard to beat. Plus their people on the phone are second to none - that's worth alot.

Comments about Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di USD Telephoto Zoom Lens for Sony Digital SLR Cameras:

Comments about Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di USD Telephoto Zoom Lens for Sony Digital SLR Cameras:

I bought this lens because I was unsatisfied with my Tamron 18-270 PZD on the long end. It seemed I was trying to use the 18-270 at the far end a lot and most of the shots would be fairly soft. Since I have a Sony 16-50 f2.8 on my Sony A77, I figured this lens would fill in pretty good. And I was right. It's a great sharp lens from one end to the other as long as you step down a little and it's full frame compatible too, unlike the 18-270.
It's fairly light, well made and with B&H great service and free shipping, I can't recommend it enough. I have a Tamron 200-500 I bought here a little over a year ago, and it's a great lens too. But it's big and bulky and people really look at you when you are using it and so I don't use it that much. I'm hoping this lens will be better in that regard because it's not so imposing and huge.
