I had an initial review on this lense and I love it! But now after working with it some more and finding its sweet spot, I found that at 120mm setting, the images are a bit (pixel peep microscope eval)on the soft side.

I backed it up to 100mm to see if I can squeeze out more sharpness out of it and detail. My results are amazing (to me at least)!! See images below.

These are taken at f5.6, 1/160s, ISO 1000 with VR on. This bad boy can get pretty close creating such Bokehlicious!!

BTW, is forgot to mention on my initial review why I chose this over the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 is that the 24-120 f/4 has the super useful VRII mode. More stops at my disposal if needed. I can get away with images that razor sharp at 1/5sec @120mm on a still object. With the D4s video capability, the VRII is a VERY added plus!!!

Love this lense! So glad with my purchase!! Stop reading any more reviews. Just BUY IT!!!

I had pre-ordered this lens and had anxiously awaited it for over a month to make life easier for me when shooting a wedding. It was to replace my Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 so that I wouldn't have to switch to my 70-200mm f2.8 VR as often in certain situations. After using the new lens exclusively with the D700 on a wedding, I was appalled when I processed the images on my computer. Every one except for the most extreme telephoto focal lengths caved in at the middle area of all four sides, even when I crouched down to take a photo at a direct angle to the subject. I had to adjust each image 8 points in the Adobe Lightroom 3 parallax distortion function to make it look normal. Other than that, it focused as well as the 24-70 f2.8 and the optics seemed acceptable. Hopefully I just got a defective unit because I can't believe Nikon would knowingly put out a product like this. As usual, B&H's return process was hassle free and I was treated with respect. I'm going to e-mail a sampling of the images to Nikon to get their reaction.

This lens has taken my photography to the next level. The focus is spot on, the colors are vibrant, and I love how much of the scene or how close in I can get on my subject... All in one lens! I am thrilled with it's performance and my purchase.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens:

I originally purchased this lens for my Nikon D800E some time ago as a "walk-around" lens, but honestly rarely used it, opting instead for my24-70mm f/2.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8. However, recently I decided to give it a real workout during a tour of NYC, and boy was I surprised. The photos were amazingly sharp, the VR was a real plus. and the maximum aperture of f/4 was definitely fast enough. I mean you're not going to get the nice Bokeh of the f/2.8 lens, but for shooting landscapes, and reducing the number of lenses in your kit for a day of shooting, it was perfectly fine.

I will undoubtedly use this lens on a more-regular basis.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens:

I am an enthusiast and not a pro. I enjoy taking photos of benign looking things and hopefully present them in ways which might aid others like me to look at things differently. This lens has become my daily glass attached to my camera. It has enough range to capture the the things which surrounds daily life. It allows me to come close to my subject or stay back if needed. The fixed f/4 is certainly powerful to use in daylight, indoors and even into the evening hours. Photos are sharp and the colors stay vivid. Graceful bokeh effect is achieved during proper settings. My only quibble is the vignetting when pushed to its full 120mm range.

        Excellent Weight to Quality Considerations

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens:

I shoot for skiing, snowboarding and mountaineering periodicals and winter sports production companies. My focus is on big mountain, backcountry and extreme sports. It is imperative to be fast and light on the mountain, therefore I have paired this lens with the D750 body so that I can have great quality without having to heave a 2.8 around with me on big mountain days.

I do use a 70-200 2.8 on powder days but it does feel like an anvil after several hours of shooting with it. I also use the 20mm 1.8 in some cases where an ultrawide is needed. However the 24-120 is on my camera body 80% of the time and I can only typically carry just one body and one lens or I get weighed down too much to be useful as a photographer and a mountaineering team member.

My copy of the lens is very sharp even at the corners stopped down to 5.6 or greater. Bokeh is decent but not as nice as the 70-200 obvously. I don't use the hood and get minimal flaring and ghosting.

I'd recommend this lens to anyone who does photographic work that is rigorously and physically demanding because of its relatively light weight and its very good image quality.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens:

Sometimes you win and sometimes you don't. I had purchased this lens sometime ago and then last fall when Nikon introduced the 24-70 f/2.8 with VR I just knew it had to be better. I did an earlier review on that product when I demo'd one in a store in Australia last November. And I really liked it. So what did I do? I sold my 24-120mm f/4 VR to buy the 24-70mm VR. Guess I got a bad copy because it wasn't tack sharp at 2.8 and there was vignetting at 2.8. See other reviews on the 24-70mm f/2.8 VR claiming the same issues. For the significant difference in cost I was disappointed and wound up returning it. I went back this great 24-120 f/4 ED VR and I've never been happier. Just goes to show that the old saying is true "...that the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence!"

I shoot under sodium vapor, mercury vapor, fluorescent light source among others and this lens captures all the detail and then some. Well worth the $.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens:

I have been shopping for a new lens that I can use for landscape, but also in the studio for model and product photography that I do. There are some lenses out there that have grown in the marketplace, but when reading reviews there wasn't the consistency that Nikon provides and what I know them to be from personal use.
In my bag I have a D7000 as well as a D750 and this lens will work with either of them so that is a plus although the D7000 doesn't get the work it used to.
I bought this lens and took it out to a nearby lake during sunset and was very pleased. It has a quiet focus and was extremely sharp right out of the box before any calibration. A couple days later I took it out for a day trip to photograph some places in north central Arizona and it was the only lens I used.
The overall out this lens provides, clarity, sharp, and color is second to none.
Depending on what you are after it is not as fast as the 24-70 f/2.8, but that all comes down to application and for what I need this lens for it is perfect.
If I were to have anything bad to say it would be that the lens is not light. I do use a tripod for many of my shots, but to walk around shooting this all day it could get to be a bit much especially with the full frame bodies out there and if you had a battery pack on it as well.
Bottom line is I would certainly recommend this lens to anyone looking for a good all purpose lens that could easily be the primary lens used and in your bag.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens:

I wanted to upgrade to a fixed aperture zoom on my D750. I had the 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 which in its own right is a fantastic light-weight lens. The 24-70 f2.8 was a little short as an every day lens for me and not necessarily affordable. The 24-120 f4 on the other hand was and is perfect - for me. It's heavier than the 24-85 but not nearly as much as the 24-70. Performance out the box as very good but wasn't blow me away great. My images were sharp, pretty much as good as the 24-85, but to me not 'tack sharp'. I used the lens for a few days before reading some online posts recommending that the lens (in particular) should be fine tuned in camera. So I calibrated the lens and couldn't believe the results. The lens is now fantastic - so sharp! I'm really pleased with it. It still has 'slight' barrel distortion which isnt going to go away. Most lenses have some element of distortion and Lightroom fixes this for me automatically - its not an issue. I highly recommend the lens!

Proves that a quality build and optics are present in this product. I can often take hand held photos in low light at 1/10 a second and still get razor sharp images. No other lens in my bag can do that!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens:

I needed an all around lens for my Nikon D750, and got a great deal on it when I purchased my D750. I had read mixed reviews about the lens, and took the risk. It was worth the risk.

The lens isn't 100% tack sharp. I will admit that. It does have some minor quirks like an extending barrel (annoying) and the afformentioned lack of tack sharp performance. However, the sharpness falloff at 120mm is very minor, and in most cases unless you zoomed into 100% you wouldn't notice it if at all. The lens does, however have some noticeable distortion at 24mm, and it can be a pain in some shooting situations to correct.

I find myself using this lens 90% of the time, and even though I bought a wide angle for my landscape work, I am beginning to wonder why I bought it as I find myself using the 24-120 for most of my landscape and portrait work. It is versatile and rugged. A very good performer - not perfect, but every bit as good as the Canon 24-105, another highly regarded "do it all" lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens:

                      I have Nikon 14-24mm f2.8, 24-70mm f2.8, 70-200mm f2.8, etc.
But for traveling, 24-120mm f4 is my choice. It is not as sharp as those above, but it is very acceptable. Please look at the samples of pictures that I took with this lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens:

It offers great convenience with excellent sharpness and really amazing VR capability. However, it's not sealed as tightly as 24-70 due to its extending barrel design. As a result, over time, dust, moisture, sand can get inside the lens and Buyers need to be aware. Secondly, distortion can be an issue between 24 and 50 if you don't do post. If you don't mind distortion, you can save yourself a bundle with 24-85VR, which is essentially as sharp as this lens with less weight and bulk.

It is a decent walk around lens, Sharp, with consistent output. Only drawback would be the weight and price.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens:

I've traveled the world with this lens from the tropics to mountainsides in Bhutan. Although I travel with several primes and the wonderful new Nikon 70-200, this lens is still my go-to. I've dropped it countless times. It's been mishandled in airline security checks, soaked and, too often, stuffed in a backpack. It's been cleaned several times and still takes remarkably sharp photos. My only caution is that the collapsing barrel design tends to suck dust particles into the lens as you zoom in and out. This isn't a problem if you treat it well and are careful about keeping it clean, but it can be an issue if you shoot in a very dusty environment, or store the lens improperly. Photo journalists take note. Other than that, it remains a remarkable lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens:

I bought the 24-120 f/4 because an elbow injury is making it difficult to shoot hand-held. I wanted a lens that has image quality comparable to my f/2.8 24-70, but lighter if possible and with VRII. The 24-120 fits those specs and has performed very well in my lens tests and in the field.

The 24-120 is very nearly as sharp as the 24-70 when pixel peeping and shows almost no difference at normal viewing distances. Color rendition is excellent, bokeh is very good. The autofocus is fast and reliable, every bit as good as the 24-70. The loss of a stop (from 2.8 to 4) has made no difference at all given how fantastic Nikon's second generation vibration reduction is: simply amazing. In a pinch, the D800's high ISO capabilities make low light shooting even easier.

I am somewhat concerned about the 24-120's construction, which feels just a bit less sturdy than the f/2.8 series lenses and makes me wonder how its weather sealing will stand up in rough shooting conditions (I shoot outside year-round). As yet, however, no problems in mild rain.

Originally I was thinking of the 24-120 as a temporary replacement for the 24-70 and planned to sell it once the elbow injury is healed. But after using the 24-120, I'm not at all sure I want to give it up. I'll probably keep it as my main walk-around lens -- for which it is an ideal combination of focal length, aperture, VR, and weight -- and use the 24-70 for tripod work.
