Before ordering the Nikkor AF-S 24-120mm f:4 G ED VR N lens, I did my usual research: I read all the reviews on the B&H website and also checked its MTF graph on the [@]. I also checked the MTF graphs of comparable lenses on both the [@]. In addition, I studied the report on an in-depth trial of this lens on the [@].Many reviews of this lens strongly criticise its distortion and vignetting. The Mansurov test, while showing some distortion (barrel distortion at 24mm and pincushion from 28 to 120mm) and vignetting on FX sensors, indicated that this was not a particular problem with general photography. My own comparison with tests of similar lenses and study of the relevant MTF graphs led me to believe that the performance of the Nikkor 24-120 ought to be little different from that of other lenses with a similar zoom ratio. Besides, the MTF graphs clearly showed that the fall-off in performance only became significant beyond 15mm from the picture centre. In other words, vignetting should not be a problem on DX sensors.I also ran a test series with my Sigma DG 28-70mm f:2.8 EX lens and got very slight pincushion distortion throughout its range – a fact which I had never noticed before, even though I have used it extensively for three years. It is one of the best lenses I have ever owned, giving excellent sharpness, contrast and colour rendition and no vignetting over its full zoom range.I cannot understand why the new Nikkor 24-120 lens has attracted so much adverse criticism, while other lenses with similar characteristics are accepted without a murmur. As my cameras all have DX sensors (2xD90s, 1xD300S) I got to thinking that I might find the performance of the Nikkor 24-120 quite acceptable. And because the zoom range is particularly suitable for everyday carry, I decided to give it a try.I received my copy from B&H on 17th January, 2011, and immediately ran some tests for distortion and vignetting on all three cameras. As I expected, distortion was minimal and vignetting absent. Unlike the Mansurov test, my test showed slight pincushion distortion all the way from 24 to 120mm. It could only be noticed on straight vertical or horizontal lines, placed close to the edges of the photograph, and even so, one had to look for it.All such things are relative and in the eye of the beholder: what I consider to be slight distortion, might give a photographer of architecture the cold shivers. But then, this lens is not meant for architectural photography. The PC Nikkors are designed for that. Neither is it a macro lens. After the distortion tests, I ran a series of tests of the Nikon GP-1 GPS unit, which I had received together with the lens (see separate review) taking hundreds of photographs to establish the accuracy/repeatability of the GPS readings. All these photographs showed excellent sharpness, contrast and colour rendition at all focal lengths and apertures, even wide open – and many of these photos were taken in very poor light. In fact, these test pictures were indistinguishable from similar ones taken with my Sigma 28-70mm f:2.8 – and I love that Sigma. It is as good as they come! The 24-120 lens is very solidly constructed, focussing, even in low-light conditions, is quick and accurate, all controls are handy, smooth and easy to work with, and the VR system works perfectly.Incidentally, one of the B&H reviewers stated that his lens was made in China, citing that as a minus point. My lens was made in Thailand, as were all my camera bodies. I frankly doubt that Nikon has a plant in China, producing the same lens.Would I buy another copy? Heck, yes! I can highly recommend this lens!

I had pre-ordered this lens and had anxiously awaited it for over a month to make life easier for me when shooting a wedding. It was to replace my Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 so that I wouldn't have to switch to my 70-200mm f2.8 VR as often in certain situations. After using the new lens exclusively with the D700 on a wedding, I was appalled when I processed the images on my computer. Every one except for the most extreme telephoto focal lengths caved in at the middle area of all four sides, even when I crouched down to take a photo at a direct angle to the subject. I had to adjust each image 8 points in the Adobe Lightroom 3 parallax distortion function to make it look normal. Other than that, it focused as well as the 24-70 f2.8 and the optics seemed acceptable. Hopefully I just got a defective unit because I can't believe Nikon would knowingly put out a product like this. As usual, B&H's return process was hassle free and I was treated with respect. I'm going to e-mail a sampling of the images to Nikon to get their reaction.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:

I debated a lot whether to go with the 24-120 f/4 or the 24-70 f/2.8 (non VR), for the main lens on a new D810. The sharpness is about the same for equivalent apertures and focal lengths in the two lenses, although the wide-angle distortion with the 24-120 is greater. However, distortion is easily corrected with the lens profile in Lightroom. In the end, I decided to go with the 24-120, for the following main reasons:-- Zoom range covers more of the types of photography that I do (landscape and general purpose).-- 3 stops of VR is better than one stop of aperture (although the selective focus with f/2.8 is really nice, I can use a good prime lens for the occasional times that I need wider apertures).-- The 24-120 weighs ½ lb less than the 24-70. That makes a big difference on a long hike.A minor quibble: The adjustment (amount you turn the zoom collar) between 24mm and 35mm is very short -- but I've gotten used to that.Altogether, I'm very pleased with the 24-120.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:

This fx lens on a D300 and is the lens I use99% of the time ( the other lens is a 80-400).with the dx 1.5 x the 24-120 becomes a 36 - 180; (and the other a 120 - 600),The colours on this lens are pleasing and it is not too bulky to carry around...have had to up the ISO setting on occasion because it's at f4 wide open...I get very good results on the D300....it will beinteresting to see what results I get on the 810... When I can afford it ! Intend to buy new 18- 35 (when I can afford it....also plus fx 28 1.8 prime...maybe a fx 135 f1.8 prime...$ get in the way as on a pension

This lens was a recommendation by a photography forum member who I must thank when I get the chance. It is now my walkaround lens, but to date I haven't used it much. It has produced some very nice landscapes, portraits, and still life images. Up to this point, I would definitely recommend it to others. If there are any difficulties or poor images taken, it will most likely be due to user error. The price was definitely less at B&H Photo.

The 24-120mm Nikkor lens is by far the most versatile and used lens I carry out in the field. I shoot a lot of stuff that requires me to be stationary so the range on this lens is a must. No complaints!

Great lens optically . Pretty sharp through the focal range. No flare or ghosting. Also very good at F/4.This is a great all around lens on my Nikon D800. Optically, no complaints. Focus is quick.

Downside is it is heavy and bulky and not something that I like to carry around all day. Also, it is not weather sealed like Nikon pro line lens. The construction does not give one the impression that this lens will have a long life of heavy use.

I use it on full frame and cropped cameras. Great for both. If you carry only one lens, this is the one to have.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:

I just bought and like it.
I am a photo enthusiast and I like to shoot my family locally and during our many around the world trips.
I have just replaced my my 28-200 lens from 15 years ago, and I must say, Nikon has continued to do a great job
The construction is solid, the overall finish of my pictures is very good.
This is a great all around lens for every day shots with very adequate versatility. This is also a decently fast lens that allows to shoot my little kids without problems
there is some noticeable distortion with wider zoom and I'm still getting used to the position of the zoom ring.

Overall this is another great product by Nikon

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:

I bought this lens to replace the AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm 1:3.5-4.5G. Although a bit heavier to handle, the clarity is amazing. I love the extended focal range which allows me to go from portraits to landscapes in a moments notice. This has become my new "everyday" lens and have proven itself many times over.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:

A walk around lens, on the F4 series is biot as sharp as the 16-35 or the 70-200 which is superb. I believe that Nikon must upgrade the optics to include in a "new" hole trinity on F4 lenses. Forf less money go for the 28-300, at least you gain more range and similar quality. A little disappointed with the images from this lens

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:

I recently purchased the AF-S Nikkor 24-124mm Zoom Lens by Nikon for a trip to Yellowstone. I used it with my Nikon D610 camera and it turned out to be a perfect around lens for all of the beautiful scenes at this famous national park. It focused quickly and correctly and never had a bad photo out of hundreds that I took while on this vacation. The only thing that you have to be careful about is not to put 2 filters on the lens since this will cause a vignette like affect at 24 mm. I had a UV filter on the lens mostly to protect the lens, then added a circular polarizer lens to improve the photos for certain shots and noticed that at 24 mm, you could see the corners of the photo being clipped. All in all it is a great walk around lens. I found this lens to be only slightly heavy.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:

I had an initial review on this lense and I love it! But now after working with it some more and finding its sweet spot, I found that at 120mm setting, the images are a bit (pixel peep microscope eval)on the soft side.

I backed it up to 100mm to see if I can squeeze out more sharpness out of it and detail. My results are amazing (to me at least)!! See images below.

These are taken at f5.6, 1/160s, ISO 1000 with VR on. This bad boy can get pretty close creating such Bokehlicious!!

BTW, is forgot to mention on my initial review why I chose this over the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 is that the 24-120 f/4 has the super useful VRII mode. More stops at my disposal if needed. I can get away with images that razor sharp at 1/5sec @120mm on a still object. With the D4s video capability, the VRII is a VERY added plus!!!

Love this lense! So glad with my purchase!! Stop reading any more reviews. Just BUY IT!!!
